Usually when a collection of older games is released there are at least a few titles in the package that make it a bargain, but the Ultimate Wargame Collection Volume 3: Modern War barely contains enough combined entertainment value to make it worth the price. The four games included in the box are for the most part mediocre, and there certainly are better collections on the market right now for the money.

SU-27 is a hard-core flight simulator that was respected in its time but offers none of the fun extras players have come to expect from their simulations these days. The flight model is impeccable, but the game just doesn't run well on many computers and is far too complicated to appeal to a wide range of gamers (it's so accurate that the instruments in the cockpit are labeled in Cyrillic). Die-hard flight sim fans have many better bargains to choose from nowadays.

Team Apache is a helicopter game on the other end of the realism spectrum, and while it is fun to manage and lead an entire squadron of Apaches into battle, the combat gets dull in a hurry. We enjoyed the weather effects and smooth graphics engine, but there just wasn't enough substance there to maintain our attention.

Steel Panthers III is a turn-based tactical ground combat war game that was hailed in its time for being just the right combination of fun and realism. It's still a decent game, but there are better games out there.

Finally we have People's General, which arguably is the most fun game in the box and certainly should appeal to the widest audience. The subject of this turn-based game is World War III, played out in Asia. It proved to be surprisingly addictive and was granted an extended stay on our hard drive as a result. --T. Byrl Baker

• SU-27 has one of the most respected flight models ever created

Cons:

• Most of these games are very old and will simply bore anyone who has come into contact with a modern game

SSI has really botched this offering. They took a great strategy game (People's General) and bundled it with three dogs. Peoples General is a top notch strategy game set on a hex map. It encorporates the latest in US military technology and presents some very plausible scenarios.

As for the other three games ... do you need coasters?

WARNING -- I have not been able to get the game to run ever since I upgraded to Windows 2000 (Professional).

Peoples General and Team Apache make this collection worth buying. They outweigh the other 2 games. I loved playing these two games for hours and hours. The graphics for Peoples General are great and the AI for it is at least 1/2 way challenging. I know the games are dated, but if you are tired of playing FPS then these two games are the way to go.

The other games can be used as decoration at Christmas time.

Steel Panthers is probably one of the best strategy games to date. While People's General is not exactly at the same level, it is a good deel for the price you are getting it at. The other two games really round up this collection and I would recommend it to anyone.
