This is an excellent introduction to the delights of Wes Montgomery, taking in the Creed Taylor Verve years, when he went from obscure jazz critics' favourite to easy listening pop star.
Too often in this period, Wes's guitar playing, virtuosic, but quiet and emotional, was smothered in jarring orchestral backings which in retrospect seem the antithesis of 'easy'. Luckily, on this CD, the emphasis is on the guitar, with orchestration used as effective punctuation, rather than an end in itself. Sometimes, as in a dazzling 'Round Midnight', a contest is fought between the two, to the excitement of the listener.
Montgomery's sheer veratility is displayed here, his flair for catchy pop songs and ballads, his adaptation of pop standards (including Roger Miller's 'King of the road'), ladiback , mellow workouts, and more pseud-friendly jazz jams. A track like 'People' is exemplary, its melody and melancholy serenly emanating from a sweet singing guitar unruffled by many complex tempo changes.
