Total nonstop action, August 15, 2009
This review is from: Ultimate X-Men - Volume 9 (Hardcover)
This is tha last trade for the X-men before X-men Ultimatum. And let me tell you this story arc is awesome. It's action packed and has a bunch of classic villians redone in the Ultimate way.
You will get to see the Ultimate Shadow King, the return of Mister Sinister, and Ultimate Apocalypse (feat. Fantastic Four). This trade also has a few LOST easter eggs hidden in it (for those of you who are LOST fans). And finally Ultimate Alpha Flight, featureing Ultimate Vindicator who is someone from the X-men's past, back to start some trouble.
This story is a great lead in to X-men Ultimatum, and really helps set the pace for the action of Ultimatum. I personally really like how the classic villians were reimagined.
If your looking for a good story full of action and really good art that changes through the different parts of the book, then this is the trade for you. As I said before this is the last X-men trade before X-men Ultimatum, and if you have been keeping up with the Ultimate U you know that after Ultamatum the X-men are changed forever so this is that last trade of the Ultimate X-men you know and love.

Still can't believe Kirkman's run on this book., November 2, 2009
This review is from: Ultimate X-Men - Volume 9 (Hardcover)
Love Kirkman but I must say that he made Loeb look like Stephen King after reading his work on Ultimate X-Men. They tottally disrespected the Ultimate Line and one of the greatest villans in Marvel history with this garbage of a story.
The whole drug/mutant steriod story line was brutal. I mean brutal.

Very, very, very disappointing...., October 29, 2009
This review is from: Ultimate X-Men - Volume 9 (Hardcover)
I waited a long time for this book, but feel very disappointed. (beware: some spoilers in this review...if you can call them spoilers).
There are some attempts to make it interesting with the whole "drug" subplot, but it seems very repetitive, specially if comparing with the whole "kick" story arch of previous numbers was much better developed.
The rest is garbage. The X-men are again faced with another super-villain (woo-hoo) that seems to have all sorts of incredible powers. Marvel girl once again is forced to become/incorporate the Phoenix, and the other team members are scared to death of its consequences. The only (midly) exciting thing is a small cameo by the Silver Surfer, the appearance of Alpha Flight and some infighting among the members.
The action is not interesting and, in my opinion, overly gory. Wolverine gets an arm AND a leg yanked out of him, all in the same book?! And another x-man has his heart ripped off his chest.
No worries about that, though, since the X-men seem to be able to magically ressusitate. 2 of them come back to life and guess, just guess who the arch-enemy is, the person behind all the mutant enhancing drug scheme? If you guessed Magneto (for the nth time), you win the big prize.
Overall, very poorly written. The pacing is awful. There's no suspense or build up. Things are just thrown together. Lots of inconsistencies with the previous books in the series (Dazzler hates Nightcrawler for kidnapping her and next thing...they together in an x-men "sub group". Colossus acts like a high-school bully and wolverine has 0 personality.
I guess the writers have hit a huge bump in which nothing new or interesting happens. And it is a shame, for I know of no other group of super-heroes/villans so interesting and multi-faceted as the x-men. Just look at what has been done with the Daredevil series (his public identity coming forth, etc) and you'll see the disparity in writing talent. What a shame. Such a wasted opportunity.
The X-men series DESPERATELY need some new blood, some new ideas. As of now, I'm not spending another cent on it.
