Product Description

Ultimate X-Men is the wildly successful relaunch that jettisons over forty years of continuity and sets the clock back to the beginning for Marvel's first group of mutant super heroes. This is a fresh start for the X-Men that begins when they're still teenagers just becoming a part of Charles Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters and chronicles their new first encounters with Magneto, the Sentinels, Juggernaut, etc. The book is published on a monthly basis and is a cornerstone of the Ultimate Universe, a separate line of comics Marvel produces all sharing the same taking-it-from-the-start philosophy. Ultimate X-men includes 70 issues from February 2001 through May 2006, including annual. It also includes bios of all characters!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, cheap product with some flaws July 1, 2006
Verified Purchase
The first 69 Ultimate X-men comics are here with the Annual for a very affordable price. Unfortunately it is on your computer, so it doesn't have the same feel as comic book. The program runs on Adobe Reader and you can view the picture, zoom, rotate, etc. There's no installation all you need is a CD-rom drive on your computer. The scans are crisp and clear. My biggest complaint is that the CD does not include Ultimate War, a cross-over between The Ultimates and the X-men. There are major plot gaps without these comics, and I am not getting the entire Ultimate X-men story.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Clarify: August 7, 2006
I don't actually own this product, but I do own the 44 Years of Fantastic Four DVD-ROM from the same company. I'd just like to clarify that the large watermark across each page is only supposed to show up on a few occasions: 1. Viewing the comics with something besides Adobe Reader. 2. Printing out the comics. 3. Viewing the comics with an old version of Adobe Reader. In this case, just update Adobe Reader. (This is based on the previous releases from this company, so I assume it's the same with this.)

If you don't mind using Adobe Reader, or reading comics on your computer, and you like Ultimate X-Men, I would recommend this. Even if they don't include the Ultimate War cross-over mentioned in a previous review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost complete collection. February 22, 2013
As noted, this collection contains the reboot known as Ultimate X-Men from 2001 to 2006. Since it ran until 2009, this collection is only issues #01 - #69, the 2006 "annual" labeled Issue 1 with Rogue and Gambit on the cover, and a set of biographies. So not complete, but a nice collection none the less. The issues are grouped by year with a decent interface for navigation. These are scans in Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format of physical copies of the books, not original in-house production material. So not only are the ads intact as well as previews of other Marvel titles, but so are the staples in the binding and any flaws in the paper. You might think that is cool, or you might find it a bit cheesy. Either way, it is a nice compact collection of a great set of books, even if a bit over priced. It is still cheaper than collecting hard copies, assuming you could find them. I don't know if there is a "volume two" with the rest of the books, other then the huge 40 Years of X-Men: The Complete Collection which only runs through 2005 so they won't be their either. So it loses one star for a misleading title. Still a great collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a bargain, but... December 8, 2006
By Cedric
At seventy issues for ten bucks, this collection is definitely a steal. The comics are PDF files, which isn't a problem, but I have reservations about the files. One, these are scans of comic books, not reproductions from original computer art. Not only will you see old expired ads, but also staples and comic book folds. Two, you will want to read these on a large monitor. I couldn't read the font on my notebook screen, and could read it at 125% on my larger monitor. Three, the "Marvel (TM)" is on every page, though I didn't have any problems with this. Four, this is a PDF file, and you cannot export JPG files, a pity since these pages would make *great* wallpaper. But, again, for less than the price of a graphic novel reprint, you have six years of the Ultimate XMen, starting from the first issue to today. With these caveats, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!! January 11, 2007

I had a hard time putting this one down. I quickly read through the entire collection and it was over too quickly. I would recommend this to any X-men fan especially fans of the old comic books and it certainly takes up a lot less room than if I had the hardcopy versions.

My only complaint is that it ends at the beginning of a new story. Ah well...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing value when first published January 5, 2014
Verified Purchase
This collection consists of actual comic books that have been individually scanned and converted to PDF files. This is one of a number of such collections, all of which were an absolutely amazing value when they were first published, with hundreds of comic books, some dating back to the 1960s, available on a single DVD for one low price. Unfortunately, Marvel Comics refused to continue licensing their content to Git Corp and the collections are no longer available. Today, the DVDs are collector's items, sometimes going for hundreds of dollars. At their original publishing price, this was an incredible deal. At the prices today, when you can even find them, you should definitely think twice.

The files are not DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected, so you can copy the PDF files to your computer or laptop, even to your Kindle Fire tablet. You can also create backup DVDs to make sure that your collection always remains accessible. If you view the collections on your computer or laptop, using the Adobe official PDF viewer, everything is fine. If you view the collections on your Kindle Fire tablet, there is a semi-transparent "Marvel" watermark that will show up on every page. I've tried every PDF viewer in the Amazon App Store, including the Adobe PDF app, and they all exhibit this flaw. Once I got used to it, though, it didn't bother me much and it's handy to have a really portable way to read these files.

Each file contains one complete comic book, including the front and back covers, all of the advertisements, the letters page, and so on. The files are arranged in two-page spreads, 1100 pixels wide by 850 pixels high. I can reduce these to roughly 75% of full size and still read them. Much below that and the text becomes hard to read and the details are muddy.

4.0 out of 5 stars You can't beat a paper comic book in your hands
I love X-men, but it's a bit of a struggle trying to read it on my computer or laptop. The constant scrolling, ugh. I prefer the book series or comics, if available.
