Book Description

January 2, 2000
Did you just get an iBook? Or have you had your iBook for a while and don't feel you're putting it to its best use? Or do you need a great gift for someone else who owns an iBook? If the answer to any of those questions is "Yes," then pick up a copy of "The Ultimate iBook Book." This book is the perfect guide to:

* Getting introduced to the iBook and its software
* Getting aquainted with the Macintosh operating system, including Mac OS 9
* Connecting to the Internet
* Making use of Apple's new AirPort wireless Internet and networking technology
* Browsing and searching the Web
* Learning all about e-mail
* Easily creating your own Web site
* Connecting both old and new peripherals (printers, drives, etc.) to the iBook
* Learning how to easily network the iBook to one or more other Macs (including iMacs)
* Understanding how to easily transfer files from an iBook to a desktop Mac
* Sharing a single peripheral (such as a printer) with other Macs
* Maintaining and improving the iBook and its software
* Playing games on the iBook
* And much more...

The "i" in "iBook" stands for "Internet," but it could just as well stand for "innovation." The iBook is *the* portable computer to get. But once you have one, what do you *do* with it? Let Dan Parks Sydow show you how to gain a complete understanding of the iBook computer, its software, and how to use your iBook to take full advantage of the power of the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The "i" in "iBook" stands for "Internet," but it could just as well stand for "innovation." The iBook is *the* consumer portable computer to get. But once you have one, what do you *do* with it? Let Dan Parks Sydow show you how to gain a complete understanding of the iBook computer -- as he did for the iMac computer in "The Ultimate iMac Book" (ISBN 0966702603). In "The Ultimate iBook Book" you'll find plenty of information about getting started with, and getting the most from, the Macintosh operating system (including both Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 9), where and how to get inexpensive or free Mac software, how to maintain and upgrade your iBook, how to transfer files from the iBook to other Macs or to the Internet, and how to use your iBook to take full advantage of the power of the Internet and the World Wide Web.

Having written well over a dozen Mac-related books, Dan Parks Sydow is one of the foremost authors on using and programming the Macintosh. Dan's numerous books cover the broad spectrum of Mac computer skill levels. For beginner-level users Dan has written the IDG Books titles "Word 98 For Macs For Dummies" (with Dan Gookin), "Internet For Macs For Dummies: Quick Reference," and more. For programmers Dan's written the IDG Books titles "Mac Programming For Dummies," "Macintosh Programming Techniques," and other more. Dan is also a magazine columnist for the Macintosh programmer's journal MacTech.

From the Author

When the iMac came out, I wanted to write a book that would help beginner and intermediate Mac users alike get the most out of their new, innovative machine -- so I wrote "The Ultimate iMac Book." Now, for iBook users, I've written the follow-up title "The Ultimate iBook Book." For all those people who e-mail me questions about connecting to the Internet, connecting your iBook to other Macs, transferring files without a floppy drive, and more -- this book is for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars It sort of falls short of the purpose, October 31, 2000

Scott McCrea (Andrews, SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ultimate iBook Book (Paperback)
I recently puchased a new ibook and was looking for a book to refresh my knowledge of mac os. While this book was not bad, in fact it was very informative, it was just not the information that I was looking for. I was choosing between this book and "the little ibook book" by Robin Williams. I already have a book by her, and Compairing the ultimate ibook book to "the little mac book" version 5 I felt at a loss. I now plan to purchase The little ibook book" to read about the one thing that this book should have put in its chapter on the internt, connecting on the road. The main reason I got a laptop was mobility and not being able to connect to the internet away from home just defeats the purpose. However for an introduction to the ibook and macs in general this was a very informative, yet dryly written book. But if you are like me and seek a way to connect to the internet on the road, then try for "the little ibook book" if it is anything like "the little mac book" it is better written and not a chore to read through as this book was.

4.0 out of 5 stars not exactly the ultimate iBook book, August 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ultimate iBook Book (Paperback)
This book was very informative and I learned quite a lot about the iBook BUT aside from a bare one line acknowledgement of the battery there was no other info in the entire book about it.
On any laptop (PC or Mac) the battery is all important and this book good as it is makes no mention of caring for, replacing or getting the most out of this little doo hickey.
