Along with Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar has been one of the key writers for Marvel Comics in the 21st century. After proving himself in the '90s as a talent to watch while writing for DC Comics and the UK comic 2000AD, his arrival to Marvel came at a time when Ultimate Spider-Man had just shot up the sales charts. It was in this environment that Millar made his first major contribution to Marvel with Ultimate X-Men, as Millar integrated forty years' worth of X-Men history, characters and lore into a solid two-year run, making the companion title to Ultimate Spider-Man every bit the creative and commercial success. Next up was The Ultimates, a new rendering of the Avengers that was to continue building on the success of the Ultimate line. He and artist Bryan Hitch pulled it all off in spades: The Ultimates and its sequel, Ultimates 2, were ensconced at the top of the sales charts every month; what's more, they were critical successes, as well. Meanwhile, Millar was invited to enter the regular Marvel Universe to take a stab at two of its most iconic characters: Spider-Man and Wolverine. Paired with industry heavyweights to draw his stories -- Terry Dodson on Marvel Knights Spider-Man and John Romita Jr. on Wolverine -- Millar brought the same fast-paced and cleverly constructed plots with which his Ultimate fans were already familiar. Amid building a small library of Millarworld indie comic books -- including the titles Chosen and Wanted, the latter of which was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie -- he managed to write Civil War, the epic seven-issue miniseries that definitively reshaped the landscape of Marvel's heroes. A long-standing fact about the "Ultimates" series of comics is that they don't come out with any regularity. While most comics come out every month, the Ultimates came out maybe every six months, maybe not. It was a shame too, because the storytelling here was some of the best in comics today. The idea of the Avengers is redone here with the heroes being flawed and having more adult hangups than the originals. In volume 2, we meet the Ultimate Defenders (a sad shadow of the team we've known for years), we see the downward spiral of Hank Pym's heroic career, the traitor amongst the team is revealed, and the return of the Hulk! Read as a whole here rather than the sporadic story we got from years of waiting for it to end, we see just how powerful and on what a grand scale this story is told on.
There are too many "Wow!" moments in here to include them all (plus I wouldn't want to spoil anything), but seeing Hawkeye cut loose (don't get on his bad side...he gets revenge in creative ways) and watching Quicksilver kill a supervillain at supersonic speed are two incredible moments here. Plus, the Ultimate Captain America disposes of one of the villains in a way our Cap never would have considered. And get ready for the most brutal Hulk/Abomination showdown you've ever seen! The only slow moment and not really necessary is the Ultimates Annual #1 included here. The solo story with Cap and the Falcon finally teaming is good, but a little out of place with the grand scale of the other story. Is Thor crazy or really the son of Odin? Would Captain America betray his country? Can Hank Pym ever be trusted again? Get ready for an amazing ride in this collection of stories! Probably the single greatest hardcover collection you'll read this year.

This might be one of the best comic book packages i have ever seen. With a fantastic comic that feels like a movie but still keeps the classic comic book touches that ground it in the semi reality that is the marvel universe. The book is so cinimatic that they made 2 cartoon movies based on these comics. The book also comes with comentaries and a beautiful black hardbound cover. If you like comics you owe it to yourself to pick up the Ultimates Vol 1 and 2.

Outstanding collection of Millar and Hitch's run on Ultimates 2.This is the Avengers like it should be done.Millar is the best at capturing Cap's edge and loneliness.
It's a must have for any fan of Bryan Hitch.HIs artwork is amazing and so layered,you find little easter eggs every time you read it.
