Moser's The Ultimatum is the story of teenager Jered Manson, who flees from his dead-end life in Steadfast, Kansas, to Kansas City. He's reduced to living out of dumpsters until a slick burglar named Jinko takes him in. Meanwhile, back in Steadfast, a waitress named Annie McFay gets saved, and her ne'er-do-well husband, Cal, gives her an ultimatum: it's Jesus or me. But it seems one of Cal's schemes-completing a collection of Barber half-dollars-is about to pay off. Anyhow it catches the interest of Jinko, who with Jered kidnaps the McFays in their Steadfast home and demands the Barbers. All is resolved in scenes that bring out the entire town in this likable if predictable tale. John Mort

This book is preceded by The Seat Beside Me (forgettable) and A Steadfast Surrender (best of the three). If I hadn't read the first two I might not have picked it up.
If you want to know what's going on with Merry, Claire, Sim, Jered, and Bailey, then you will want to read it. I don't think it's as interesting as A Steadfast Surrender (I find it a bit annoying that Moser must introduce completely new characters with each book and then focus 50% of the book on them) but it is worlds better than The Seat Beside Me which I don't like at all. I find the new characters, Annie and Cal, not very likeable. We don't see enough of Claire, Merry, and Sim, but I did enjoy seeing more of Jered and even Bailey.
