5.0 out of 5 stars Maelo at his best, December 3, 2005
This is, probably, Maelo's best album, by far. First, Kako's band, which includes Carlos "Patato" Valdés on congas and Kako on timbales, sounds as tight as a salsa band could sound; aggressive, like a New York band, but with traces of traditional Cuban sound.

Maelo's voice is at its best, and his interpretations simply rock. Classics like "Mi negrita me espera", "El cumbanchero", "La cumbita" and "Entierro a la moda" are included in this album, and other less known songs as "Cantar maravilloso" (a cover of the classic rumba performed by Los Muñequitos de Matanzas) make this album a must have for any serious salsa fan.

Simply put, if you don't have it, get it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drums+soneos=musical heaven, April 1, 2011

This album gives you another reason to love Ismael Rivera's work. The album is great from start to finish. The classic "Mi Negrita Me Espera" one of his best known songs as well as the fast-paced "El Cumbanchero" and "La Cumbita." The latter two (2 of my favorite Maelo songs) show the strong influence African music had which is one of the reasons I really enjoy his music so much. You can feel a strong plena influence in his music also with very good drum work from two leyends: Patato and the great Kako. His soneos are second to none and when you mix great music and meaningful lyrics, you get a work of art. No filler songs on this album because none were needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing salsa, February 21, 2011
By
This review is from: Ultimo En La Avenida (Audio CD)
This album shows why he was called "Sonero Mayor". The band is also amazing, and the whole album is pretty hard salsa, yet the songs sound pretty different from each other.

However it is pretty short. With eight songs only, and most of them running at 3 minutes, it will leave you wanting for more, and this is the only reason it's 4 rather than 5.

This is one of "The Sonero Mayor's" best records. It includes El Cumbanchero, Mi Negrita Me Espera, an several other songs that have made to most of the "Greatest Hits" records.

Title translates to "The Latest in the Avenue" or "The Latest Thing". Mi Negrita Me Espera, Cantar Maravilloso, El Cumbanchero and La Cumbita are all classics. If only want one CD by Maelo, get this one.
