Nigel Godrich has been working with Radiohead for the majority of the band's career. He was there twiddling the knobs on their second full-length album, THE BENDS, and he started producing the band's albums with the legendary OK COMPUTER. Godrich has been such as integral part to Radiohead's sound, he's earned the nickname "the 6th member of Radiohead." With his new band Ultraísta, echoes of Radiohead often seep in, but make no mistake, Ultraísta is a very different band: in tone, timbre, and almost everything else. The other two-thirds of the band are Laura Bettinson on vocals, and Joey Waronker (who has also worked with Godrich on Atoms For Peace).

"Bad Insect" is both the first track on the album and the lead single promoting the album - it's a good track (one of the best on the album), and it sets the tone musically for the rest of the record. This album was created "from a love of afrobeat, electronic, art and inspired by tequila." This tagline from the band is a pretty apt description of their work - especially apparent here is the influence of electronic and afrobeat. Much of the song Radiohead has been using lately is reproduced here, but in a much more accessible way. "Bad Insect" uses the similar choppy drums and synthesizers that a song like "15 Step" has, but here it isn't used in an alienating way. The music itself serves best as a backdrop for Laura Bettinson's vocals. There are a few moments when the music is especially captivating ("Our Song,") but for the most part, its repetition helps create an atmosphere for the vocals to capitalize on.

The second half of the album seems to focus less on melody in favor for atmosphere, and in these tracks the synthesizers come to life.

A first release for this group of people. ProductiOn values are off the chart amazing and it is a pleasure to listen to all the way through. Once you acquire a taste for the genre it will have you coming back for more. Vocals have grown on me as well. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars from me is because some of the songs seem to be too similar to the others. Would have liked some more variety but it is still an album worthy of your time and money.

This is fantadtic electronic music. Fans of Radiohead have a good chance of liking this. Nigel does a lot of work with Radiohead, and hes the main brains behind this group. Give them a shot and you won't be disappointed!

I'd probably give this 4.5/5, just because after the 30th listen a couple of the songs are losing a bit of appeal to me. But the voice and the beat seem to meld incredibly well together, it's been a pleasure to listen to.
