Customer Reviews

Reason I bought this was the music and I will purchase another.
Aloysius Newby
This album is all over the place, pretty much no flow between the tracks and overall a poor selection of songs and half-assed remixes.
Steve DeBellis
Blast it out in your car or use it for a party and you will impress!

As a collector in a world where the CD single is virtually defunct, remix compilations such as this can come as a real treat sometimes. The problem is, they can be really hit or miss, and usually just end up being some strange combination of the two. In regards to the Ultra series specifically, I’ve bought only a handful of entries before this one, but have been pretty pleased overall with both the mixing and the song selection.

I admit I tend to be drawn more towards commercial pop artists and sort of base my decision to purchase (or not) on how many songs I’ve heard of going into it, but am always glad to get to know more “underground” producers who may have something interesting to offer up. I won’t get into a tedious track by track review here, but there are a few highlights to make note of. I really enjoyed the fast-paced Will Sparks remix of Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” and thought Cedric Gervais’s mix of “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Rey added a darker edge that really suited the lyrics of the song. You might not expect a band like Linkin Park to pop up on an album like this, but Steve Aoki gives their “Light That Never Comes” a unique club flavor while at the same time not presenting something that would alienate their usual fan base. One of my favorite tracks is actually the nearly instrumental version of Dimaro & Ahzee’s exotic “Drums,” which has a lot of tribal/island elements mixed with a modern flair. There’s plenty variety to be had here, which is great.

There are a few things I look for in techno/dance mixes: A nice variation (which this does have), longer songs (6 minutes or more), smooth transitions, and good balance. I naturally gravitate toward trance. I also have the Ultra Music Festival 2014, which has a lot of the same songs. Enough about me, though--this cd compilation, because it's dance, is made up of mostly vocal-centered tracks. The mix is very smooth in transition, but the tracks are all very short... Most of these are very pop-ey remixes, and many times I find I can get the same atmosphere as I have from these mixes on BenFM (I'm near Philly). If that's what you like, grab it! If not, I really like Ultra.dance 09--Two phenomenal mixes with some famous moments and lot more unexpected variations.

I've seen previous Ultra Dance offerings described as 'uneven'. I was generally ok with them as they provided a convenient EDM bundle if occasionally including some ridiculously clunky mixes and an odd cut or two. However UD 15 feels a cut below it's predecessors. I haven't listened to it enough to quite nail down what it is that really bugs me about it but I'm reminded of those compilations that appear to be original artists but turn out to be the "Candlelight Dinner Players Orchestra" or some such.

Not saying it's truly bad. Just saying I was disappointed and frankly I'm not very fussy. Maybe they just need to rename the brand from 'Ultra Dance' to 'Now That's What I Call Dance!' Forewarned would be forearmed...

Its been awhile since i've bought a yearly album like this. The last Ultra Dance album i have is from 2007. Anyway, the first disc tracks are pretty much remixed mainstream radio tracks (which is about the only way i can stand most of the crap out these days is with a heavy dance beat/remix). Towards the end of Disc 2 is when it starts getting more into the deeper trance and less vocal stuff which i liked.

This album helped me get through a long run with a relay team. Not one bad song on here and it kept me from having to buy many different albums to get the hits
