I loved it,

This review is from: Ultra Lounge: Tiki Sampler (Audio CD)
I discovered this CD while browsing in a record store awaiting a friend. Intrigued by the cover and campy artwork, I decided to give it a try. Am I glad I did! I listened to it three times from beginning to end on my trip back to Tallahassee from Orlando. I've never heard many of the songs before, so although they're 40 or so years old, they sounded new and fresh to my ears. I truly enjoyed the "Boy from Ipanema," "Brazil," and Jackie Gleason's "A Taste of Honey." Although I'm an avid Doors fan and have even met Robbie Krieger, the CD's elevator version of Zacharias' "Light My Fire" had me giggling with glee. I work in the rock music industry, and this was a welcome change from the generally nondescript and repetitive music heard on popular music stations today. I think anyone who can nostalgically remember these songs when they were first released, as well as those like me who were too young to have caught them as original releases, will enjoy these hits. I've since ordered three more Ultra-Lounge CDs and am planning my first retro-cocktail party--as soon as I can find some tiki drink stirrers, lava lamps, and faux bamboo wallpaper in the local party store. Fun fun fun!!

Ultra Cool,

I own all the ultra lounge CDs. This is a great sample set and a great place to start if you are new to the series. The Fuzzy Sampler is good too, along with Vegas Baby. Ultra lounge series has always been heavy on instrumentals...some great, some ok. This disc has a lot of instrumentals but every one is a gem! i love this CD and the entire collection. Not really Tiki music, but a cool set anyway. if you want more Jungle stuff ....try a Martin Denny CD or the Del-Fi title: Jungle Jive.

Don't be mislead,

Don't be mislead by the packaging of the cd. It's not about Tiki Lounge, though there are a few Tiki tracks like Martin Denny but it's mostly just cocktail lounge. This cd is full of wonderful tunes and is a must by for any collector of the Ultra lounge series! Plus you also get several bonus tracks and 2 hidden tracks. Does anyone know who the mystery man from spain is? I just can stop listening to it......!

An Ultra Lounge must-have!,

I own the fuzzy and tiki samplers, and have enjoyed them both. They are great for parties or introducing your friends to some of the "classics." I especially enjoyed "Brazil" and "Happy Together." If someone knows what the two unlisted tracks are, please post a review. They were the funniest things I've ever heard. If you are thinking about buying this CD, its worth it for them.

Great music in an even better package.,

The Ultralounge series -- in addition to being great collections of music that straddle the line between irony and good music -- also have commendable art production, with the best examples being their Fuzzy and Tiki samplers. This is a CD everyone wants to look at: Packaged in faux bamboo, it opens up to a CD printed like a slice of pineapple. Remove the CD and see the glass beneath. The CD booklet contains a beautiful painting of a 1950s swinging cocktail lounge. And the music? It's a great sampler of the Ultralounge series, and a stronger album on its own merits than the previous Fuzzy sampler. Of particular note are the rock and roll covers on this album (poor Mel Torme -- did he realize that he'd end up a punchline) and the bongo lessons track. This album also contains numerous hidden tracks that aren't listed by Amazon.com. A great value for the music alone and a CD that all your friends will be jealous of when they see it.

A taste of Capitols huge vintage catalog,
By
This review is from: Ultra Lounge: Tiki Sampler (Audio CD)
The entire ultra-lounge series is excellent. However, all of the CD's in this collection only add up to a small tantilizing taste of the huge back catalog of vintage easy listening albums from the 50's & 60's - not to mention the Hawaiian LP's which are surpisingly underrepresented on the Tiki Sample and in the Ultra-Lounge series as a whole. Common Captiol/EMI, start releasing some of these vintage albums in their complete form!!!!!!!!!!

A downright enjoyable CD that is so much fun to listen to. I own the Fuzzy sampler as well and highly recommend both for any music lover's collection. I am most certainly going to collect the whole series. Before you even get to the first note of the CD you're wowed by some great packaging: the faux bamboo case and pineapple covered disk just add to to the experience that awaits you. There is more right with this CD than is wrong but I tend to agree with other reviews posted here- although it was a fun rendition, I too could have done without the "Munster's Theme". Mel Torme's version of the Turtles' "Happy Together" alarmed me at first, but I soon found it wonderfully kitschy. There's much to sing a long with here and plenty more to get your feet tapping. The arrangement on Lena Horne's "Wives and Lovers" was superb, and you'll hear no arguments from me when it comes to a Nelson Riddle arrangement, even if it was "My Three Sons." Two "hidden tracks" heighten the enjoyment! Great discs to play at parties. Just plain fun! You won't be disappointed.

A great cd which will probally having me buy other lounge stuff. In particular I loved the Wanda de Sah song, and all the other latin themed tunes (Brazil) etc. True it could be more tiki (get rid of the munsters theme), but A definate must for listening to music on a sunny day.

Louis Prima makes David Lee Roth sound like a virgin...,

This review is from: Ultra Lounge: Tiki Sampler (Audio CD)
I never got the lounge music thing but this collection worked for me because it's the very best one or two tracks from the large amount of lounge CD collections available from Capitol. 23 tracks including Nelson Riddle doing My Three Sons, Peggy Lee doing The Boy From Ipanema, , Mel Torme butchering Happy Together, Les Baxter, Jackie Gleason, Julie London, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, and so on. Plus the theme's from The Munster's and Get Smart. Lot's of fun here.

Tiki Goodness! Lose the Munsters Theme.,
By Dwayne Ed. (Wisconsin) - See all my reviews

The Tiki packaging alone is worth the price of the CD. I did not like the Munsters theme on the CD, it has nothing to do with TIKINESS. Without the Munsters theme, I give it 5 stars.
