Editorial Reviews

From its founding in the 1940s until after it became the label of the Beach Boys and the Beatles in the 1960s, Capitol Records devoted itself to solo pop singers, its flagship artist being Frank Sinatra. Stars like Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, and Judy Garland flourished at Capitol, and the company also contracted such performers as Peggy Lee and Bobby Darin for a stint. All that material has served as a basis for EMI/Capitol's Ultra-Lounge series of compilations, which reaches its 25th volume with Ultra-Lounge: Vegas Baby!. The only surprise is that it took so long for the concept of a Las Vegas volume to come to fruition. The 20 tracks include a number of artists closely associated with the city of sin, including those mentioned above (with the exception of Sinatra, whose recordings generally are not available for compilations) plus Tom Jones, Steve Lawrence, and Wayne Newton. Usually, the songs themselves also have some connection with Las Vegas' principal business of gambling ("With Plenty of Money and You," "I'm Shooting High," "Lucky Day," etc.) or at least can be interpreted that way. (Joe South wasn't thinking of Vegas when he wrote "Games People Play," covered here by Mel Tormé, but the title and Tormé's lively treatment justify its inclusion.) The arrangements tend toward the loud and brassy, the better to be heard over those slot machines, and the singers are equally demonstrative. The result is an excellent compilation of traditional pop, Vegas-style. -All Music Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars Lady Luck is with Capitol's new Ultra-Lounge CD!, September 26, 2002
This review is from: Ultra Lounge: Vegas Baby! (Audio CD)
Although the Lounge revival has (sadly), faded from its heights of the late 90's, Capitol thankfully hasn't jumped ship on us martini swillers. "Vegas Baby" is a brand new offering in their Ultra-Lounge series (File under: LOUNGE).

The Special Edition disc has a green felt cover, with a roulette wheel toy in the center that has the Ultra-Lounge logo on it (it doesn't spin; it's more like one of those Cracker Jack toys where you tip the game to move a silver ball around). The toy is fun, but makes you wonder how you'll stack it on the shelf with your other CDs.

Look at this Loungey line-up: Mel Torme, Bobby Darin, Vic Damone, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Wayne Newton, Count Basie, and even Tom Jones! Loius Prima and Keely Smith sing one of their classic standards, and Dino and Sammy are right on the money. You'll be pulling right into Swanksville, baby!

The only thing missing here (and this is a big-time mystery!), is why there's no Frank on this disc. Sinatra's "Luck, Be a Lady" would have been perfect, and even if there's no Frank, the song itself belongs on this album. This oversight is pretty major, and takes the fizz right out of your club soda. For shame, Capitol!

Even so, this ain't no sucker bet, pally. Roll them dice, order this CD, and Lady Luck will be at your side all night!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining, great for parties!, January 21, 2003

This review is from: Ultra Lounge: Vegas Baby! (Audio CD)
With relentless upbeat energy, this album will brighten your mood no matter how much you've just lost at the tables.

Although there's some overlap with other UltraLounge collections, and there's one jarring misfit (Torme's Games People Play -- a great track, but not for this album), I highly recommend this collection.

I find the Ultralounge series in general to be hit or miss -- some I couldn't live without, some I got rid of within a few months. But this might be the best one yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars great vegas supplement, January 15, 2011

This CD was a great complement to our Vegas themed New Year's Party. All the oldies (except Frank) are on it and it gives a great atmosphere to an old style Vegas theme. Definately a recommended collection for this style party.
