3-D Ultra Pinball Thrillride has made the transition from the PC to the Game Boy Color about as flawlessly as could be imagined. The result is a game so addictive that you will have to adjust the family budget to support a fresh supply of AA batteries.
The game is set up like an amusement park, and your goal is to play until you turn out all of the lights at the park. There are 14 different pinball tables to play, and each one offers up its own challenges. Just like in most other pinball simulators, the idea is to rack up points by hitting as many objects as possible, thereby getting to bonus levels, special events, and the ever-exciting multiball.
3-D Ultra Pinball Thrillride also offers up five fun zone events. These events range from roller coasters, Canyon River rapids, bumper cars, and several other amusement-park-themed pinball tables. Each of the tables comes with its own background and music, which sets the tone for the table and entices you to keep playing. However, if music on the Game Boy makes you cringe, the game allows you to turn it off.
This game comes with a built-in rumble feature that adds another sensory level to the gameplay. As the ball contacts flippers and bumpers, the game causes your Game Boy Color to rumble in your hands. The graphics are excellent, and the flippers and the ball are just the right size for viewing on the small screen. Certainly, 3-D Ultra Pinball Thrillride is a must-have for pinball enthusiasts, but its low learning curve and highly replayable fun make it a must-have for nearly any Game Boy owner. --Todd Mowatt
