5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Tool
I purchased this little device to use for bench testing older IDE drives and it works superbly. No setup and definitely plug and play. 2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
While I am sure that these adapters work for some configurations, they did not work for mine. That's not to say that they are defective or poorly designed. I think that my MOBO would not handle the timing of the two older hard drives I used these on. I am not sure.

Connected right into my external eSATA port and with the SATA I interface it makes scanning and disk checking so much faster and easier. One word of caution though, this product is designed for a hard disk drive not an optical drive and be sure to set the jumper setting to cable select or your BIOS will not recognize it. Thanks ULTRA for another great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works but will take you time to get there with no instructions ...., January 25, 2011

Well have fun trying to get this to work. I found this product reviewed elsewhere when I could not get it to work.
With no instructions, you don't know what is wrong - does this not work, not compatible with this IDE drive, or are jumpers set wrong. To get this to work for IDE drive to SATA on motherboard, use CS (cable select jumper) on your drive, connect 2 power supplies - one to this adapter, and of course one to your drive. Then go to BIOS and select the drive for initialization. Then it will work. I saw elsewhere to have no jumper, or use Master jumper, etc. - this will NOT work.

Anyway, it works fine, but only 4 stars for no included instructions and 45 minutes of frustration for what should have taken 10 minutes tops.

Good luck.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy, August 22, 2011

I purchased this product to utilize my old IDE drive through a SATA port on my new computer. Although it was easy to install my computer could not find the IDE drive. I checked my bios and pin settings on the drive and I saw no reason why it wouldn't fuction. Cheap but waste of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needed Another Part in order to work, January 29, 2011

This review is from: Sata To Ide Adapter (Electronics)
I bought this in order to install an IDE hard drive full of data into a newer SATA computer. The adapter was pretty simple to install on the hard drive, and to connect to the SATA outlets. There was one hitch, however, which is that both the adapter and the hard drive need power, and this adapter does not come with the cables necessary to connect to the computer's power supply. There was no mention of this in the instructions that came with the adapter or in the description online. Bummer. It took a little head-scratching to figure out what I needed. Fortunately, the necessary product is available online (through Amazon in fact) for only $5. Manhattan, 6" SATA 15-Pin Male to Dual 4-Pin Molex Female Y Splitter, 308977 Manhattan, 6" Sold by: WOWparts

With that additional adapter there was still ONE MORE THING TO DO. This also was not covered in the instructions with the ULTRA adapter. I needed to set a jumper on the IDE hard drive to "master." The drive had been the "slave" in the prior installation, and it is still a secondary drive in the new system. Still, to work correctly, it needs that jumper. Fortunately I had little jumper pins that I could use. The instructions for setting the jumper were printed on the hard drive (in my case, I needed to jump the pair of pins farthest away from the power supply plug. When everything was set up correctly, the little indicator light on the adapter winks on and off as the hard drive is being accessed. Very nice.

With all this done, voila! Success--at least so far for the first couple of weeks. :)

So it seems like a good product. It works well, doesn't require that you sacrifice a card slot for an IDE controller card. It's too bad the instructions are not more complete. Better instructions would have saved me about a week of being annoyed--and I would have purchased the power adapter at the same time as the drive adapter.

While I am sure that these adapters work for some configurations, they did not work for mine. That's not to say that they are defective or poorly designed. I think that my MOBO would not handle the timing of the two older hard drives I used these on. I am not sure.

Make sure you check the specs on your IDE hard drives first and on your MOBO. Also, the instructions on these suck. Nice graphics about cable connecting, but tell you nothing about how to set up these up so they work. Instructions tell you nothing about changing jumper settings on the HD's, etc. So, if there are problems, you'll need to call ULTRA and see what they have to say. Their Tech Support is very helpful, but in this case could not really resolve the problem.

My advice: I am going to keep these as I am sure this is a good product; but you're better off getting Ultra's external IDE/USB adapter for your older IDE HD's and then get yourself a new SATA internal HD and just transfer the data over. Then you can use the old IDE HD as an external backup if you wish.
