This review is from: Ultra Weekend (Audio CD)
The Ultra series tries to have it both ways with a high-concept split between "Friday" and "Saturday" discs, which is not at all a bad idea. Trouble is, instead of two discs worth of "sexy house" you get, to put it complimentarily, two discs worth of classy house, perhaps aimed at the "thirty-is-the-new-twenty" crowd, though I think they'll demand something a little more exciting! These are glossy, grown-up dance tracks with little to complain about by way of the cheese factor: this is mostly fine sunny Sunday afternoon at the beach house, hang-the-mistletoe Christmas Eve houseparty house, dotcom office-party house. It's all well and good as dance music to kiss under the stairwell to, or to dance to while sober and without feeling too embarassed, but it just doesn't have much damn oomph!Of course, this depends upon your mood and taste, and I did find myself enjoying it. The "Friday" disc is, as noted, pretty homogenous neo-disco type cuts, and around the time "Back to Basics" shows up, it's working a pretty dependable groove, though only "Freek U" really stands out. The "Saturday" disc is a bit more varied, often tilting towards an electro/French house vibe (by way of that dependable Englishman Jacques LeCont with Juliet's "Avalon" for the closer) and including a nice section of progressive house that includes the terrific "Sound of the Drum" and the amusing White Girl Robot vocals on "Till There Was You". This adds up to a bit more excitement overall, but it hardly adds up to a must-have set. That beach photography is no musical accident either: this is the kind of house that sounds like the DJ was spinning with seashells over his ears. Overall, it's not a total loss as a Weekend, but it doesn't deliver anything Ultra.

Great Driving Music,

Amazon recommended this album today and I've had it for over a year and still cue it up on my iPod when I'm in the car. It's perfect for a pool or beach day. I can understand why another reviewer thought the album was bland although bland is somewhat of a harsh way to describe it. If you're looking for intense, get on your feet, 3 AM after hours music this is not the album you want. Granted, you would probably not be interested in this compilation based on the release date if you're looking for cutting edge dance.
