Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Position estimation of wireless devices has many applications in short-range networks. Ultra-wideband (UWB) signals provide accurate positioning capabilities that can be harnessed in wireless systems to realize these applications. This title provides detailed coverage of UWB positioning systems, offering comprehensive treatment of signal and receiver design for ranging, range estimation techniques, theoretical performance bounds, ranging algorithms and protocols. Beginning with a discussion of the potential applications of wireless positioning, and investigating UWB signals for such applications, later chapters establish a signal processing framework for analyzing UWB positioning and ranging systems. The recent IEEE 802.15.4a standard related to UWB is also studied in detail. Each chapter contains examples, problems and Matlab scripts to help readers grasp key concepts. This is an ideal text for graduate students and researchers in electrical and computer engineering, and practitioners in the communications industry, particularly those in wireless communications.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book to understand UWB-based localization, December 9, 2008
For the past decades, wireless localization and positioning have been widely investigated in both academia and industry. Numerous efforts have been devoted to develop theory and devices for fast and accurate positioning required by systems such as the Enhanced-911 (E911) emergency service. However, high-precision positioning can only be available with the aid of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals. Due to its huge bandwidth, UWB signals can provide orders of magnitude improvement on the spatial and temporal resolutions compared to conventional narrowband signals.

First presented to the public in 1960's by H. F. Harmuth, UWB has been rediscovered in recent years for its potential applications in high-rate communications and high-precision localization. Since then, a vast number of books have been published to introduce the UWB system and related techniques. Among them, the current one by Z. Sahinoglu, S. Gezici and I. Guvenc becomes quite unique for its sole focus on the positioning problem which was usually treated as a byproduct of communication system design.

As members of the most active researchers in this field, authors of this book have offered us a comprehensive introduction of UWB-aided positioning techniques including measurement, positioning, tracking, error analysis, performance bounds, ranging protocols, practical applications, up-to-date developments and future research directions. In terms of content, this book is highly recommended to electrical engineers who either need a high-level picture or in-depth understanding of the technical details. Since this book fully focuses on the positioning problem, it is able to include many discussions that have been occasionally overlooked, such as the Ziv-Zakai bound. As a preliminary knowledge of the main theme, chapter 2 and chapter 3 can also be used for general purposes to understand the basic of UWB. In addition, each chapter ends with problems, some of which are quite inspiring. Graduate students are strongly encouraged to choose their interesting problems to work on. The last chapter gives a concise survey of the recent developments and future research directions. Reading this chapter may help people, especially graduate students form their own ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of UWB localization, November 2, 2008
By Henk Wymeersch (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I picked up this book because I am interested in localization systems. This engineering book deals with ultra-wideband localization, which is expected to be a killer application with centimeter-range precision. The book covers a lot of ground, including basics of UWB, ranging algorithms, and localization algorithms, as well a number of more advanced issues. Although mathematically pretty rigorous, I found the book generally easy to read, especially because of the clear examples. Definitely worthwhile for anyone interested in UWB localization.
