5.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
So many weight training books that I've run across are for beginners and include things like stationary lunges or other very tired excercises. Also, a lot of books include models who do not look anything like what I would expect a 'fit' person to look like. So many weight training books that I've run across are for beginners and include things like stationary lunges or other very tired excercises. Also, a lot of books include models who do not look anything like what I would expect a 'fit' person to look like. I love this book because the author is the model, and she doesn't have breast implants, collagen injected lips, or look like an anorexic teenager.

Whitmarsh manages to take several essential excercises, and updates them by adding balance balls or making them plyometric. All I can say is that these work outs are definitely a challenge!

Another excellent feature of this book is that there are absolutely no excercises using machines. Everything in this book you can do at home with a simple set of weights and a balance ball, which is convenient. For me, I prefer the free weights to machines because free weights are more challenging and you see more results. The addition of balance balls just means your core muscles are going to be utilized unlike with machines where you do not have to stabilize yourself.

In short, I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners because I think they would easily get discouraged. It's also worth noting that this book could be used for either a man or a woman, and that there is a male model in the book, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You Cindy, June 26, 2006

The Ultrafit Challenge book changed my life!

I am 36 years old, a mother of one, and have been physically active since I was 13 years old. My weight has always fluctuated, and in the last 6 years I started running. I absolutely love it! It has been great for keeping my weight down, but I was never satisfied with the look of my body. Outside of running, I would spend 3 - 4 days at the gym doing the same old weight routine I learned from a workout video 10 years ago! (How pathetic!) My diet was always about low fat, low protein, and high carbs. I considered myself well educated in the diet field, since I've been doing it since I was a teen.

Four months ago, I was fed up with not seeing any results! My fiancée suggested I hire a personal trainer, but it really wasn't in my budget. I headed to the book store in search of some inspiration, and thank goodness I was drawn to the Ultrafit Challenge Workout book! When I read the introduction, I felt an instant bond with Cindy! I started the next day.

I'm sorry to say I did not take before and after pictures, nor did I weigh or measure myself. (I have a phobia!) BUT my clothes are huge on me and everywhere I go people notice how my body has changed! Personal trainers at my gyms have asked about my workouts, and they have all bought the book to use for themselves and their clients! Friends couldn't wait to run out and buy the book, and now all their friends are also using Cindy's amazing workouts! Every day someone notices how fit I am and I finally have the body I wanted my whole life!

PS: My fiancée also went on the program with me and has lost 20 lbs and looks amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, learn how to get ULTRAFIT for life!, January 10, 2006
By
This review is from: UltraFit: Challenging Workouts -- Amazing Results (Paperback)
I've been fortunate enough to go through Cindy's program in San Diego, CA and meet her in person. She's just like her video! Full of energy, positive and in phenomenal shape! Not only did I lose nearly 20 pounds and 9% body fat in 6 weeks, I actually LEARNED HOW TO EAT PROPERLY! I had never been taught how to eat for health and weight control before... I felt as if I had been given THE KEY to staying in shape.

Its a magical book because you're learning from somebody who has been there, done that! Cindy was 40 pounds heavier when she first moved to California and she knows exactly how to turn it around. No shortcuts here, just good solid advice and encouragement!

One thing that is really important, and Cindy mentions it in her book & her video, is that nutrition is 70% of getting in shape, working out is 30%. Make sure to follow the program for 6 weeks and you will be amazed the change as weight melts off. Little things she's learned over the years have a huge impact on getting fit like drinking more water, eating smaller portions more often, and working out regularly.

You can commit to anything for 6 weeks - go for it!

After reading the positive reviews I couldn't wait to see what the secret is with this book.
While the book is nicely structured with pretty pictures and informative, there is nothing I haven't seen or heard before. Furthermore, I'm a DVD workout addict because it means variety no matter what the weather is like. I don't like treadmill, stationary bike or jumping around outside. It is just too boring, but that's what the book's schedule shows for cardio. Also, the DVD included with the book is just a 15-20 minute sample of a separately sold longer DVD that alternates cardio/boot camp style and weights. However, I found that somewhat boring also. Right in the beginning of the DVD Cindy explains her secret to loosing 40 lbs.: eating healthy and smaller portions. She is very honest by saying her problem was to think that she could eat whatever and however much she wanted, just because she did aerobics twice a day.
Overall, what I got from the book was a better idea what types of exercise should be alternated to create a well balanced workout schedule. Cindy's physique, however, is very inspiring and nice to look at.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Innovative Exercises, July 5, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: UltraFit: Challenging Workouts -- Amazing Results (Paperback)
The book is beautiful to look at and has a high quality feel to it and some of the exercises are new and unique. This book comes with a d.v.d. that takes you through a 20 min. aerobic class type workout that you can do at home. The author does know her stuff and has put together some challenging and effective workouts. I was looking for a book that had several new and unique exercises and I was able to find a few here. If you are looking for several new exercises to spice up your routine, then I would reccomend her other book "101 Exercises".

This is not for the faint of heart or begginner exerciser. It is for a person who is in shape and ready for the next step up. If you are already very fit but ready for perfection, this workout will get you there as long as you do it move for move. I feel like a celebrity when I do this workout because I know that is what it takes to get the body of a celeb.

Good book with some interesting combinations, the best part of the book is the DVD that comes with it. It features a 20 minute cardio/strength program that focuses on your core which is challenging. It is an exerpt from the 45 minute DVD sold seperately. It is a good book if you are intermediate to advanced in your fitness levels.

Great book. I am nearing the end of my first week. I started on Stage 2 (of three stages). Each stage is six weeks long.

The weight/stability ball workouts are very challenging. I am feeling the soreness in my muscles and I am confident I will see the results I want.

the book is a few years old and the web site she refers to for recipes has changed and those recipes aren't there.

More sample menus would have been nice for the nutrition portion but she gives some good advise, although, nothing I haven't heard before.

I have been working out with Cindy via exercisetv online and through my cable provider and she is by far my favorite.

If you are serious and ready to work hard then this is it.
