3.0 out of 5 stars a holistic approach to longevity
I have read many books on the subject (Klatz et al) and find the approach taken by Mark Liponis to be quite different. He focuses on the immune system and has a holistic approach to longevity. I found his style of comparing viruses and anti-oxidants which attack the body to terrorists and homeland security a little too simplistic. Overall I rate it an informative book.

What do breathing, eating, sleeping, loving, soothing, enhancing, and dancing accomplish? They are the seven things you can do to change your life for the younger (and better).

Recent scientific research indicates that by paying attention to your immune system, you can control the aging process. Simply by following the seven steps put forth in this book, you can reverse many of the complications that people associate with aging-and live long, healthy, productive, and remarkably enjoyable lives. Each of the seven steps is detailed, and recipes are provided to ease the transition to productive eating. Also included is a simple review of the science behind the immune system and a quiz to assess your current lifestyle.

Talk about your interesting book. It is chock full of great information that inspires you to better living. He gives just enough details to make various lifestyle changes not only reasonable, but feasible. He even does a relatively decent job of explaining the complex immune system in layman's terms (considering I have a college degree in this field and he lost me a time or two, I wouldn't say it was a perfect explanation).

My chief complaint about this book is the great amount of time he spent in the netherworld of evolution. The science of the immune system was quite possibly spot on, but it was absolutely unnecessary to continue to state over and over again how it evolved over millions of years. A reference or two I wouldn't even mention, but the evolution horse was beaten dead. Regardless, there is a great amount of useful information in the rest of the book and I intend to put it to use.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a great resource for those experiencing an overactive immune system and those who hope not to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why You Should Buy This Book, September 19, 2007

This review is from: UltraLongevity: The Seven-Step Program for a Younger, Healthier You (Hardcover)
In a nutshell, what Dr. Liponis is saying is: There is one primary way to make sure that you live a long and healthy life, and that is to keep your immune system in the best shape possible. The most recent medical research shows that nearly all, if not every, disease now known is actually caused by an overactive immune system--this includes everything from cancer to strokes to Alzheimers to diabetes. Your immune system, which when it's doing well is keeping you healthy, is also responsible for making you ill.

In the first part of the book, Dr. Liponis explains how the immune system works, describes how it may have evolved, and then shows how, and why, it goes wrong. In the book's second part, he shows you how to keep your immune system in perfect shape with an easy-to-follow seven step program. The book concludes with excellent recipes from the world's best spa kitchen, Canyon Ranch, where Dr. Liponis is the medical director.

All in all, there is no other book on the market now that can promise you a long and healthy life -- if you're willing to give up your bad habits and start taking care of your immune system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Breathe..., September 30, 2007
By
This review is from: UltraLongevity: The Seven-Step Program for a Younger, Healthier You (Hardcover)
In a world saturated with health crazes, UltraLongevity shines alone as a smart, intuitive, and realistic methodology to not just living longer, but being happier and healthier in the process. In accordance with his own medical research, Dr. Liponis converts familiar--even almost mundane--accepted knowledge into new understanding that will change your perception of healthy living.

Arming the reader with general immune system knowledge in a way that makes Biology 101 seems as intriguing as the season finale of 24, Dr. Liponis establishes an easy-to-follow foundation for the "how" and "why" of his seven step process. And then in simple words and everyday language, he untangles the confusing web of health newsflashes and rules and jumbled facts into a clear solution that just "clicks."

Dr. Liponis' boost-your-immune-system approach is not about dropping extra pounds, lowering cholesterol, relieving stress or increasing your energy; it's about how these things--and much more--can and will happen as a side effect of changing your habits based on his philosophy. As you read the book you'll feel compelled to squeeze yourself a fresh glass of orange juice, soak in a bubble bath, walk your dog, and tell your husband you love him, all while taking a big cleansing breath and saying, "Ahhhhh."

The enlightenment you'll receive from UltraLongevity is, quite literally, life changing. It's not the Fountain of Youth per say, but rather a key to living the longest, healthiest life possible. I found it fascinating and enjoyable to read, but most importantly doable. I'd recommend it to anyone wants to live long and be happy. Much praise, Dr. Liponis, for doing more than your part to better our world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultra Inspiring, January 1, 2008
This review is from: UltraLongevity: The Seven-Step Program for a Younger, Healthier You (Hardcover)
I found this book to be inspiring and now realize that getting older does not have to mean "feeling older" with aches, pains and diseases such as arthritis, cancer and other age-related ailments. Dr. Liponis gives wonderful and specific examples on how to reverse the aging process through calming the immune system so we can lead healthy and vibrant lives. His program is practical and easy to incorporate into busy lifestyles. Liponis also provides information on proven technological breakthroughs pertaining to anti-aging supported by hundreds of studies. The end of the book features an eight day eating plan. The recipes are from the Canyon Ranch and are easy and delicious.

I highly recommend this book to people who want to live long and healthy lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ultra Informative and Inspiring, November 30, 2010
This book is practical with some new information that adds some insight into what we think about aging. Instead of viewing aging in terms of length of years Dr. Liponis believes that it is the immune system that is the key to aging. He presents a simple quiz to determine the condition of your immune system. He then lists 7 steps to help achieve a healthier immune system some of which I never would have guessed. He uses research to back up his claims. Practical and helpful--a good book to have on your shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wowed by Ultralongevity!, September 10, 2009
Perfect for : Personal Use, Professional Reading, Health Library

In a nutshell: This is another book that completely wowed me. The author explains how important our immune system is and how we can work in harmony with it, or ignore it and ultimately age faster and become unhealthy. He then goes on to share seven areas to focus on to improve the function of our immune systems: Breathe, Eat, Sleep, Dance, Love, Soothe and Enhance. I will admit that I have read very carefully from the beginning through the section on breathing, but that I skimmed beyond that as I scored so low on the UltraLongevity Quiz that I felt I needed to really go through the steps carefully. I am now more aware of my breathing and am focusing on changing the way I breathe. I find it amazing that I feel much more calm after paying more attention to this one step for a few days. This is another life-changing book that I hope you will take a look at.

Extended Review: In general, I know that I have an immune system, and I know a few things about how it works, but I didn't realize that I could do things in my everyday life to help support it (other than vitamins, etc). Mark Liponis explains the immune system in easy to understand terms, showing readers how they can live in harmony and support their immune system with easy changes.

Content: The book starts with an UltraLongevity Quiz, which was very eye-opening for me. The author then talks about the science behind the immune system, how it works, what it is made up of, and how it can impact our overall health and aging. The author then goes on to explain that we have the control to improve our immune system so that we are living in harmony with it by addressing 7 areas of our life: Breathe, Eat, Sleep, Dance, Love, Soothe and Enhance. Looking at the list, it seems a bit overwhelming, but the author goes on to provide us with an example day of someone who is actively using the seven-step program, and finishes with a sample menu for eight days, and includes vegetarian suggestions for those who need it.

Format: Easy to read, but seemingly very complete. The author shows us why the immune system is important, and how to support it in our daily life.

Readability: I was amazed at how quickly I read the book. I was so interested in what I was learning that the time simply flew by!

Overall: A very informative book that should help readers to feel and look younger and healthier. After actively working on the first step, I can see how beneficial this book is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, September 19, 2007
This review is from: UltraLongevity: The Seven-Step Program for a Younger, Healthier You (Hardcover)
As an avid reader of health books, I was dazzled by this book. Dazzled!!

I really enjoyed the manner in which the importance of immunology was explained. Beautiful balance between being more than superficial, but less than academically mind numbing. Without stealing the thunder of the author Mark Liponis, know your CRP level and track it like you would your BP or cholesterol levels.

Over time, it may be discovered that there is an even a better indicator than CRP but it does seem to offer some very strong predictive/monitoring power. I, for one, am going to become much more knowledgeable about not only my own CRP level, but that of my family.

Also, I loved the author's philosophy of health. Liponis is too young to be a pioneer in holistic health (as it has been around for ages), but he has done as good a job as I have ever seen to weave a wellness philosophy that makes good sense, is easy to remember, and just plain feels good.

Let the dancing begin! (Trust me, you will understand this important point once you read this outstanding book.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, October 18, 2010
A Kid's Review
This book explains very well how the Inmmune system works and how it can be helped to regain strenght, but the advices are rules that we all know -like avoid stress, eat vegetables, fruits, whole grains, etc, and certain supplments. I guess I was expecting a more detailed plan for X and Y conditions.

I read Ultra Longevity on a recent vacation and found the information and understanding I needed to change my life. While some may think the chemistry is a bit confusing it truly paints the picture as to why what you eat and do impacts your overall health.

Ultra Longevity also gives you a simple guide to follow in how you can live a healthful and rich life. My goal at 44, my age today, is to have a body that will allow me to do the things that I want to do, no matter my age.
