I use this monitor primarily for photo and video editing, where color accuracy is key (work in Lightroom, Premiere Pro and Da Vinci Resolve). I purchased the Dell U2413 off Dell's website in hopes it would be a big upgrade from my normal gamut 21" monitor. And it was...after a few tries.

Over the course of the past 3 weeks, I have come to learn Dell has exceptional customer support and abysmal quality control. I went through 4 monitors before finally receiving a product worthy of their website's description. The customer support team was unbelievably helpful, and replacement monitors arrived at my house within 1-2 days of reporting a defective unit. They even cover return shipping.

Here were the problems with the defective monitors:

1. Touch buttons did not function, rendering the OSD inaccessible
2. Dead pixel near the center of the screen. Tried to un-stick it by both physical and software means to no avail. Dell has a 0 dead pixel warranty on this model.
3. Poor color accuracy compared to other two models. Only covered 91% of AdobeRGB spectrum compared to 97%+ for other three received. For $500+, it should be darn near the 99% accuracy Dell claims the monitor to have.

However, the fourth one is absolutely brilliant. Great color accuracy (98% AdobeRGB), good uniformity and viewing angles. Build quality is solid, menus are intuitive, "Game" function improved the response of the display for smooth FPS gaming, tons of relatively accurate color spaces for every application possible. Exactly the kind of quality I was looking for to help with accurate color correcting.

I've ordered 3 of the Dell U2413 monitors from sellers who use Amazon fulfillment (Prime eligible). The monitors arrived on time as usual with Amazon Prime shipments. They were double-boxed, which was nice to help protect them.

I am returning one of the three because it has a hard-to-ignore area of pink tinting at the bottom right corner near the power button. I expect better from a monitor selling at this price point and marketed as color calibrated.

Pros:

+ The anti-glare coating used on this monitor is the best, which is to say least noticeable, I've ever seen on this type of monitor. It doesn't make the monitor look dirty or grainy or sparkly like the aggressive coatings on many IPS monitors do. It just give a nice, clear, sharp picture and text. You may see a little bit of reflection in very bright light like sunlight shining through a window, but it is a good trade. I don't like glossy monitors and the anti-glare coating used on many other matte IPS monitors strains my eyes. I think Dell has done a very good thing here and I consider this the key selling point for this monitor.

As an aside the less expensive Dell U2412M has an anti-glare coating that looks bad compared to the U2413 but is better than many others and acceptable to my eyes. That said, I wouldn't buy a U2412M again now that the U2413 is available.

+ Color that is very good, at least to my eyes, after calibrating. It is a wide gamut monitor, so colors are richer than on a standard monitor but not overly saturated to the point of looking neon as was sometimes the case on my Dell 2408WFP.

I purchased this for editing photos and color grading video and it works well for both but let me explain what I mean by "pretty good". The image quality is great. Blacks are decent for an LED backlit monitor though not quite as deep as some monitors with glossy screens and not anywhere near a plasma monitor. It is able to produce good shadow detail.

I would not use this as my primary reference monitor for broadcast video color grading but it is good as one of several points of reference. I had a tough time deciding whether I wanted to get this or a Panasonic plasma TV to use as a grading reference monitor. I opted for this for now but still use another monitor for reference as I'm mainly just publishing to the web. I still think that a proper plasma display is in my future for color grading.

My specific, niche needs aside, this was money well spent and I have no regrets because now I have a very solid monitor. I just find that it is not the perfect, one-and-only solution for color grading.

I was not able to get the USB or card reader slots to work with my home-built computer. I would not necessarily consider that a deficiency of this monitor and is just as likely an issue with my computer. But consider that if you absolutely need those ports, there is some risk of compatibility issues, at least with non-Dell computers.

If you need a wide color gamut monitor (Adobe RGB coverage), this is a fantastic option at a very good price.

I decided to write a quick review from a macbook pro user because I have read various reviews of this unit on the internet where mac users could not get it to hook up properly. I gave it 4 stars because I'm a tough critic ... I rarely give a 5 star review. On to the review. This unit arrives tightly packed which is a good thing in case of rough shipping. Like most monitors it snaps together quickly and then comes the decision of which cables to use to hook up to your macbook pro. I have a mid 2012 running Maverick and I used the DP to mini DP cable included with the monitor to connect to my macbook. The downside of using this cable with the macbook pro is that it will not deliver the sound. If I were to use the HDMI to TB connector then the sound would come through the speakers I have connected. I instead chose to simply plug my speakers into the headphone jack on the MBP. In preparation I had purchase a hdmi to thunderbolt connector which was surprisingly not needed. I also used the included upstream usb cable to connect to the laptop for the devices that I would be plugging into one of the 4 usb 3.0 ports on the monitor (2 of which I am using for usb 3.0 external drives). I do a lot of photo processing so that was my purpose for purchasing this monitor. Although it comes with some really cool features concerning profiles, I found even the adobe rgb 98 to be a bit off out of the box. So I grab my Spyder colorimeter to calibrate the monitor. While you are here on amazon ... order a colorimeter. For true color representation you won't be able to rely on the monitor installed profiles. The true photographers are very well aware of this any way so using a colorimeter is going to be no foreign task.Read more ›
