Ultrasone PRO

PRO550 Professional Headphones

The PRO 550 headphones from Ultrasone provide professional-quality audio in a lightweight and comfortable design. The headphones can fold down into the included hard case, which also has room for storing accessories. The headphones are fully adjustable, and have comfortable around-ear speed-switch earpads. A spare pair of earpads are included.

The headphones use large 50 millimeter Mylar drivers to provide smooth, natural sound with a wide frequency response that offers deep bass and crisp treble, ideal for tracking bassists and drummers. The headphones use Ultrasone's proprietary S-Logic Natural Surround Sound technology to provide a realistic soundscape, creating the impression that you're listening to high-quality speakers that are actually several feet away. This technology also produces the same perceived volume levels at a lower dB rating, allowing you to set the volume on your player a bit lower.

Other great features of the PRO 550 include MU metal shielding, which reduces radiation emission by up to 98 percent compared to other similar headphones on the market. This is an excellent feature for users who spend a great deal of time using headphones. The headphones include two single-sided detachable cables; one straight and one coiled. Each cord has a standard 1/4 inch stereo plug, and a 3.5 millimeter mini adapter is included.

The best value headphones you can buy to date.

The Pro 750s are by definition very accurate, mids and vocals are crystal clear and natural, and the bass is good and deep but not overwhelming.

I remember my quest for outstanding bass began long ago. I'll spare you the time and skip to the end by saying that I thought I found "the one" when I bought the D2000 a second time. It was such a fabulous headphone, and I didn't plan on upgrading anytime soon. But unfortunately, curiosity killed me yet once again, and I gave in and bought the Ultrasone Pro 900 due to intriguing reviews. I've always heard Ultrasone had a legendary bottom end, but nothing could prepare me for what I was about to hear.

Let's start out with something basic. How about build and appearance?

Opening the box to the Pro 900 is a bit of a surprise. All I can say is, they look smaller in the pictures! Despite their relatively big earcups, they are lightweight, yet sturdy. Even though the headphone is entirely made of plastic, this is not the type of plastic that people will fear of breaking or cracking. This is the tough stuff. I have absolutely no worries about it getting broken or damaged in the happenings of an accident. Everything looks and feels great, including the headband adjustment mechanism, which slides easily and stays where you want it to. The headband itself is made of a more rubbery material that just feels great! No worries, no complaints. Nice simplistic design.

But build and appearance are factors that carry little weight during critique. So now, we'll move onto an overlooked category that carries a significant amount of weight when judging a headphone. The comfort.

I honestly thought these things would be uncomfortable before I bought them, but that turned out to be proven false when first placed on my head. Even after half an hour passed, I'm still quite impressed with how well these feel.

The first word that comes to mind when listening to these cans is authority. I've never heard such deep, powerful and controlled bass out of headphones. Mids and highs are stunningly clear and detailed, and the overall presentation will bring out every detail of your source material, good and bad. Listeners with low-bitrate MP3s need not apply, as these phones will mercilessly slaughter lossy files. As with most headphones, and Ultrasones in particular, give these some burn-in time in order to experience them at their full potential. With high-quality source material and a decent amp, you will be astounded at how good these headphones can sound. Highly recommended.

These headphones should fit right in between the $100 and $200 range. At the time they were introduced they sold for about $230.

These headphones support spacial cuing in the form of specially placed Mylar cones behind a metal barrier that also serves as a electromagnetic field barrier. Ultrasone claim that mechanism provides the head transfer cues needed to make the headphones sound more like a set of speakers.

While I didn't find the headphones sounded like a set of speakers, I do feel that sound is more natural and robust than with direct placement headphones since it is focused on the outer ear rather than directly on the eardrum. However, I didn't notice any less fatigue while listening than with any comparable set of headphones.

This is a set of cans that will make you notice things in your music that you didn't notice before. The soundstage is strong and present but not too pushy.

If you're looking for a comparable product at a lower price you might try the Grado SR60 headphones.

You really need a good headphone amp for use with these headphones to get the full dynamic range from them. There's a guy that sells some nice burr-brown portable amps from his ebay store that are inexpensive and work well with these cans.

As far as looks, this headset looks very large on your head but is very aesthetically pleasing if you like blue. If you don't like blue, just listen and try not to notice your reflection.

* Very robust hardware.
* Detachable screw-in cable means less chance you'll have to return the headphones for repair after a lot of use due to cable detachment.

These headphones were my first foray into the higher tier of audio - audiophile, if you will. I was extremely nervous buying my first set as the price is easily thrice what I was previously willing to pay for headphones. Not only that, but Ultrasone was a company I had never really heard of. I was looking at several other headphones, such as the AKG K701 and the Beyerdynamic DT880, but ultimately took the chance on these because of the reviews I have read on them. I am so glad I took the chance - these headphones are OUTSTANDING!!! The vocals are so clear and precise. Mids are beautiful and the bass is so tight and distinct that it feels so much like you are in the same room as the musicians. I really can't say enough how awesome these headphones are. For the price, these are easily the best bang-for-your-buck headphones on the market.
They are surprising as well. I knew it would come with some sort of casing or protection, but was floored to see how well made the case was for them. Very sturdy and rigid. The only complaint I have on that is how easily it attracts lint - the fabric pattern and color make the case a literal magnet for pet hair and such. In addition, they came with two cords to attach them to your audio source, a straight 1/8" minijack cord and a coiled 1/4" standard cord. The cords are well constructed with durable yet flexible covering and gold connections at each end. I imagine they would take quite the punishment over the life of the headphones, so they're built like it - quite impressive! I don't foresee that to be a weak link at any point in time. Also included in the case is a demo CD of classical music to demonstrate the simulated surround capabilities that I've yet to listen to, but plan on taking the opportunity to listen when I get a working CD player again soon.
