Book Description

0124605850 978-0124605855 September 11, 1989
Engineers, scientists, and technologists will find here, for the first time, a clear and comprehensive account of applications of ultrasonics in the field of process control. Using numerous examples of high-volume, low-cost applications, the author illustrates how the use of new transducer materials and designs, combined with microprocessor-based electronics, make technical and financial sense for concepts that only a few years ago might have been of interest only to academicians. Some of the important topics covered include coupling, acoustic isolation, transducer and sensor design, and signal detection in the presence of noise.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I recommend that this book be in the collection of every serious student and practitioner of ultrasonics. Everyone in the quantitative end of process control should have it also.
Lynnworth has produced a monumental work.
To find out the scope of the utility of ultrasound in process control, how-to-do-it, and what solution-packages can be purchsed, read this book
--JOURNAL OF THE ACOUSTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA
Highly regarded in the field, Lynnworth is certainly the most qualified person to write on this subject. More than 1,000 references are cited....Practical approaches are suggested. The book is written primarily for process engineers and scientists interested in solving measurement problems with ultrasonic techniques. Overall, this is a comprehensive reference work on ultrasonic measurements in industrial processes. Excellent illustrations are used throughout.
--IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ULTRASONICS, FERROELECTRICS, AND FREQUENCY CONTROL
A compendium of devices, methods, data lists, short cuts, guide lines, list of references and sources and just generally good advice...Its usefulness is not confined to industrial processes but, in fact extends well into just about any endeavor or problem to which an ultrasonic approach may be the solution...It realizes its claim in the preface that it seeks to present an intuitive approach as far as possible rather than a mathematical one.
--SUSZANNE THWAITES in AUSTRALIAN PHYSICIST
The book is well written and the author's style favours intuitive explanations over rigorous mathematical derivations while references to such material are generally included. For anyone working in a 'hands on' environment designing or selecting a system to ultrasonically measure one or more process control parameters this book would prove invaluable. It should be emphasized that the book does deal preferentially with industrial applications, and as such would also be a useful handbook to familiarise the academic community with some of the problems and state of the art solutions developed for process control thus far.
