5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut, April 1, 2000
This review is from: Ultraspank (Audio CD)
I heard about this band because they were on Ozzfest a couple of years ago and Ozzfest is known for bringing great unkown metal bands to the forefront. Ultraspank is no exception as this is one of my favorite cds. Their music has a kind of Toolesque sound incorporated with some techno/ industrial flavor and leans more toward the dark side. Though heavy, it's not groove-oriented like Korn or Pantera, but is more laid-back say like Staind. The vocalist possesses great range from singing to screaming and has a kind of Toolesque singing style going. The backing vocals also add some depth. Standout tracks include "Sponge", "Wrapped", "5", and "Butter". Despite the references to Tool, Ultraspank has their own unique sound, which is hard to describe, yet is original and definitely worth checking out. Static-X, Spineshank, and Rammstein are also great bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love or Hate? Worship!, June 20, 2003

I've read through some reviews and it looks like you either love Ultraspank or hate them. I don't see how any metalist could hate Ultraspank.

(For the guy saying they want to sound like Tool)??What! Tool and Ultraspank have very different sounds. Took uses a bit softer lyrics and instruments. Both bands use different topics and the like.

Anyways, This band is the God of "Heavy Metal." I say Heavy Metal because it's not Nu or Industrial. This music is pure Heavy Metal.

Ultraspank has a way of putting you in a trance. This is some of the best guitar working I've ever heard and a beat you can just sink into.

Only a few bands have really impressed me with vocals like this. At one moment your hearing soft welcoming sounds, feeling a bit secure in their way. Then you are blasted away by some major power vocals.

This band is so hard to put to words. It's best to discover this awesome band for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars SWEET!, November 4, 1999
This review is from: Ultraspank (Audio CD)
I first heard the song called "5" on the Playstation game "3xtreme" and I thought the song was awesome, I like Limp Bizkit and KoRn, but I thought this maybe a little to hard for my tastes, but boy was I wrong! It has turned out to be one of the best CD's I have ever bought. The best songs are "5", "Butter", "Suck", "Fired", and "Sponge". THIS CD RULES, GO BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very different album, October 19, 2000

Different yes, but bad, Not a chance in hell. Ultraspank is far more intellegent than other "popular" metal bands like Korn, and Limp bizkit. I'd place Ultraspank as a mix of Staind and I know this is going to sound weird but they kinda remind me of Fear Factory. Pete Murry has a great voice and should be recognised along with all the other great lead singers such as Burton Bell, Chino Moreno, and Max Cavalara.

I'd watch out for Ultraspank, especially since they didn't suffer the sophmore curse of other bands as Progress is one of my favorite albums.

Favorite tracks are Butter, Slip, and Sponge.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb debut, July 26, 2000

Ultraspank came out of nowhere a few years ago with this awesome self-titled debut, and it still stands today as one of my favorite metal CD's in my collection.

There's actually not much to describe that's original to this disc, perse, but that doesn't mean it doesn't pack one hell of a wallop! "5" just absolutely pummels your eardrums into a wonderful state of insanity, with it's killer chorus and soaring-to-harsh vocals which fans of Staind are going to love. The Tool influence is definitely evident, especially on "Sponge" and "Worn," as Pete Murray does sound quite a bit like Maynard when he actually sings. But Ultraspank can do more than just sound like Tool; they hold their own in the 'new metal' category - in fact, I think this is the best debut to come out of any band in the genre for quite some time. Fans of Staind, Tool, Deftones, and Kilgore will absolutely love this album; and if you're reading this, my guess is you're not an opera fan. You're here because you like metal, right? Then put down the cat, stop looking up dirty pictures on the internet while reading this review and go get the Ultraspank debut!

5.0 out of 5 stars You have to hear it., May 27, 2000
This review is from: Ultraspank (Audio CD)
This is simply one of the best "un-popular" bands out there. Ultraspank combine the vocals of Maynard James Keenan (Tool) with the guitar style of the Deftones. And it turns out in a brilliant mix. Every song on here is simply mindblowing, none of them can be missed, cuz if you do, then you won't know the power that this band has. Also check out a Perfect Circle or Static-X if you like this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars No! Man, man hands are dirty!, December 19, 2000
This review is from: Ultraspank (Audio CD)
What a remarkable debut by Ultraspank. Having some exposure with Ozzfest and their latest release, "Progress," Ultraspank is a metal band on the verge of fame. In my opinion, they are more tasteful than any other of the new metal bands out there that preach to pre-teens about the "hard life" they live and about how they're suffering in their melodramatic teen head spacy lives.

Heavy, masculine, and driven guitar riffs, excellent, artistic and original musical composition, beautiful melodic and passionate vocals by Pete Murray, Ultraspank is neither a wannabe of Tool, nor any of the other comparable metal bands (Deftones, Sevendust). Their message is completely different from Tool - neither the music nor the lyrics have any similarity.

Ultraspank is marching to their own rhythm, and I'm hoping a great following will be behind them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another awesome Santa Barbara band, May 12, 2000
By
sc_demandred (Irvine, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ultraspank (Audio CD)
Ultraspank has created a mesmerizing and heavy grooving sound that melds metal with melody. The Santa Barbara music scene is/was rife with a lot of punk bands, hippy bands and bad metal bands. Ultraspank (known to the old-school as Spank) are a cut above the chaff, sharing the stage with SB greats like Snot, Ugly Kid Joe, Slick6 and more.

The disc opens with "5", a hard grooving scream romp that immediately shows us Ultraspank can kick some hard metal. "Suck," my personal favorite track, starts low, kicks into high gear and features ripping vocals from Pete Murray. His voice is very reminiscent of Maynard James Keenan's (Tool), which is a good thing as Keenan has one of the best voices in music today.

Other outstanding tracks are "Perfect", "Fired" and "Butter."

Ultraspank have a new album due out this summer, and if their debut is any indication, we have great things to look forward to. More polished than pop superstars Limp Bizkit, Ultraspank joins such future heavyweights as Static-X, System of a Down, (hed)pe on the front lines of a revolution in metal. Get in now or get the F@#$ out of the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars they rocked very hard......, March 29, 2005

honestly, this one is in my top 3 of all times....very intelligent original combination of sick ultimate hard core metal , discrete groovy techno beats, claustrophobic atmospheres, and strange poetic lyrics....it's a musical catharsys, never overpassed since it was issued, even by Lo Pro (the reincarned combo of singer Pete murray and guitarist Neil Godfried).... How is it possible that this band dismissed so early after having issued this jewel.....go for it absolutely ......

Good album for those of you out there who like industrial with a "Toolish" feel. "5" is an incredible song. A must buy for industrial-metal fans.
