2.0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE!! POOR QUALITY!!
I wanted the highest quality NASB large print bible I could find. I hoped for top-quality leather, binding, and paper. I was very disappointed. The leather and paper are excellent. The printing appeared to have been done well. The problem is the binding of the bible. It's been done shoddily at best. It began to fall apart about the sixth time I opened it. I couldn't...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Bible - the best quality ever!, August 16, 2003

I can't even begin to describe this Bible! Adjectives fail me in communicating just how wonderful the quality of this Bible is. I've shown it to numerous people and I've yet to have anyone NOT have their mouth drop open in astounishment at the texture and overall quality of this beautiful Bible. It is truly built to last.

As a minister, I now know that I have a "preaching" bible that will never have to be replaced. And if it should happen to have any deteriation, if offers a LIFETIME GUARANTEE!! I called the company to double check this and the spokesperson did indeed confirm that if at any time the bible begins to "fall apart" (binding or pages loose) all I have to do is return it to them and I'll get a brand new one.

But I'll tell you right now that this bible isn't gonna come apart. The quality is unlike anything I've ever known. And I speak from experience as someone that has owned over 50 different Bibles! This one easily tops all of them, as far as quality goes.

And the best thing is that this is the New American Standard version, the most literal bible on the market. It's true to the original Hebrew and Greek and is second to none, as far as translations go. If you want to read, in English, what the OT and NT authors were writing in their original languages, then you can't do any better than the NASB.

It's well worth the price. Give it a try today and I'm confident you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marginally ahead, February 16, 2004
This review is from: Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible-NASB [With Velvet Book Holder] (Leather Bound)
I confess I probably own too many bibles. After several lean years, I have in the past 12 months purchased for myself the ESV Calfskin Heirloom Edition, In Touch Ministries NASB Top Grain & now this NASB large Print UltraThin reference Calfskin. In a less than convincing attempt to justify such excess, may I say that I am a vicar who lives, eats, breathes and teaches the bible; I needed a new bible; the strong pound against the dollar meant that bibles in the US were about half the price of those in the UK ; and none of these bibles are available over here! I will not be buying another for many years - honest! How do I know that you ask?

Several reasons: 1st, because I have just bought a bible with a lifetime guarantee, so if it falls apart before I do, I get a new one free! 2nd, because this bible has all I need in a bible. It is a great translation (not infallible like its source, as some commentators seem to suggest) but very reliable and readable. It has a comprehensive cross reference system, a compact concordance and handy maps. The text is bold enough for a preacher to hold it in his hands whilst speaking and quickly locate one's place without pausing & squinting. The printing & type face is exceptionally clean and crisp. The binding is impeccable - the calfskin leather better than current top flight Cambridge bibles. I think it probably hyperbole to call it "ultrathin", fairly thinnish would be more honest. The paper is not the ultra thin India paper, but it is thinner than average Bible paper - however, the quality of the paper feels smooth, even and allows for no read through from the text behind. Size wise it is not too large for carrying around - it certainly feels more compact than the other two bibles mentioned aboved.

.
This is not a wide margin bible and anyone who likes writing in theirs should probably consider the ESV Heirloom or In Touch editions mentioned above. Cambridge add Art Gilding to the edges - a lovely deep red under the gold leaf to add lustre. I think this would have given a little extra traditional finish. Have I any niggles, criticisms, dissapointments? My one quibble of substance is that the pages are cut very unevenly, which means that the margins from top to bottom are not uniform throughout - sometimes we have a centimetre top margin, sometimes just 3mil between print and page end!!! It is a shame that a bible which is so painstakingly bound, should have rather sloppy quality control over the paper guillotine. Perhaps this is pedantic, but it does somewhat detract & distract from the overall aesthetic delight.

Other reviewers have suggested this is the best bible on the market. With the mis-cut marginal caviat I agree. If you dont want a wide margin bible, nor mind a slightly wonky margin bible, then in a straight race, this bible wins by a width!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Beautiful NASB!!, August 1, 2003

This review is from: Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible-NASB [With Velvet Book Holder] (Leather Bound)
This is a beautiful Bible! Black leather that feels like
silk, wonderful font size, outstanding cross-references,
and the NASB text make this an outstanding Bible.
The leather is lined inside and outside the covers. The
paper is very nice, perhaps the best I have seen in a
Bible. The Bible is also rather handy, smaller than
the double column NASB, but filled with the same wonderful
features. Lockman and Foundation have done it again.

The NASB is an excellent translation for study. I use
it each week when I prepare sermons and Bible studies and
find that I use it most often in the teaching of Jesus and
the NT letters. Now and then I use it as the text I teach
or preach from in a sermon or during a Bible study. The
NASB works well alongside the ESV, RSV, NRSV, NIV, and
HCSB. It is an outstanding translation for inductive
study of the Scriptures, one of the top two or three for
this purpose, if not the best.

If you use the NASB on a regular basis and if the NASB
is your default translation, then this edition is for
you! I would love to give it six or even ten stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet!, September 2, 2005
This review is from: Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible-NASB [With Velvet Book Holder] (Leather Bound)
This is a great reference Bible. It is not what I would consider "ultra thin". It's about the size of a standard reference Bible. It is two column LARGE print (11pt?) with center column references.

It has color maps in the back and a 66 page concordance.

The leather is buttery soft and flexable. The pages are sewn rather then glued. It is not red letter. The margins look a bit more than 1/4".

There are 9 blank pages in the front of the Bible and 5 in the back if you'd like to record your own notes, or other information.. It is the updated NASB text and includes translators notes.

Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite an ultra-thinline., July 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible-NASB [With Velvet Book Holder] (Leather Bound)
Beautifully bound and resting comfortably in one's hand or in your lap, this is a top flight Bible. The print is clear and the pages(thicker than typical thinline Bibles) are white and easy to read from. The center column references are spaced enough to be legible. All in all, this Bible is very easy to read.

And, of course, the NAS translation is literal and excellent.

On the other hand, be sure of what you are purchasing. No doubt, this is no "thinline" Bible--and certainly not "ultra-thin" by any stretch of the imagination. It is only marginally smaller and lighter than the ESV Heirloom edition. It also is not paragraphed, which is disappointing.

Having said that, however, this is a wonderful Bible. Top of the line when it comes to binding and presentation.

I couldn't believe it!! To save money, Foundation Publications sends good quality material to China, and has the production of the bible done there. If you want very high quality that will last a lifetime, google Allan Bibles, Oxford , or Cambridge Bibles. They cost a little more, but WELL worth the price. Allan bibles are the best, but they don't have NASB. Oxford and Cambridge have NASB, but not large print. If you want a high quality leather bible, do not buy this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable Quality, October 14, 2006
This review is from: Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible-NASB [With Velvet Book Holder] (Leather Bound)
I simply cannot believe the quality of this bible!

The binding, leather, choice of paper, print clarity easily deserves 10 stars. I recently purchased an ESV Heirloom Reference Edition in calfskin that I was EXTREMELY pleased with, but this bible even out-does that one.

A few things to note:

1. The bible is not an ultrathin as the name states. It is exactly the same size as my leather NIV Scofield and about 25% thinner than my MacArthur Study Bible in size and thickness. It feels like a study bible, not like a thin reference bible.

2. The calfskin leather is absolutely of top quality. It is soooo soft.

3. The paper is not shiny, nor is it too thin where you can see the text from the opposite side of the page. It is a very smooth paper that makes the print very crisp and well defined. This is probably the best bible paper I've seen used in a bible.

4. The print is extremely crisp & dark. It is slightly bigger than my Scofield and is VERY easy to read.

5. The binding is Smith sewn and is very well done. The bible comes with a lifetime guarantee, so even if something should happen, they will replace it with a new one.

This bible is worth every penny paid for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Bible, May 2, 2006

Foundations Publications, in my opinion, can make a Bible like no-one else. Whether it be Leather-Like, Bonded Leather, genuine Leather, or Calfskin, they all are sewn bindings, and excellent quality leathers. None of this gar-bage that most other publishers make. No glue-bound dreck. However: this calfskin edition, as all Foundations calfskin editions, is not like the leather on the Cambridge Bibles(which, I feel, are declining in quality, by the way.) This is like a soft shoe, with no particular odour. I do find the ribbon-marker to be substandard, only because it is too short. The print is good, maybe 10-11 point. There are no added helps like Book Intros, or a Harmony of the Gospels. I wouldn't call this a Thinline edition, either. However, if this is going to be your main Bible, go ahead and spring the extra bucks for it. It is definitely worth it. No Bible is physically perfect, but this one certainly is in the running for it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Quality, September 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible-NASB [With Velvet Book Holder] (Leather Bound)
I ordered this NASB, Large Print Ultrathin Reference Bible (with deluxe leather cover) and could not be more disgusted. I received it brand-new in the box, and as I opened it I noticed the cover was coming un-glued from the inner pages. Also, it was not until Exodus 10 that the pages began to actually be attached to the binding block--they were just hanging on from the stitching at the bottom. The back of the Bible was just as bad. The last few pages were coming apart from the binding and again, the cover was coming un-glued. I was so disappointed. There is a quality control problem at Foundation. I read all of the reviews here at Amazon before I decided to go ahead and order this Bible. I was aware of the very negative reviews that a couple of reviewers has given this edition. I hoped that they were just unlucky, a few always get by the inspectors. Howerver, please beware of this edition from Foundation. I would strongly recommend that you personally inspect one before you pay for it. I wish I had. I am returning this for a refund. The Cordovan leather editions from Crossway are excellent--I have two and could not be more pleased with them. I hate to write such a negative review, but in this case, it is needed.
