I bought this edition for a seminar in college. We had to purchase this specific edition so that the pagination lined up with the Gifford Companion title "Ulysses Annotated." It was a great idea, to key the text to the original in the way that they did, but workmanship fell short. Before I managed to get through the end of chapter 2, the pages began to come loose. Then the cover came off -- but without a bend or tear -- the binding itself just sort of quit on me. I believe the cover price was somewhere between 18 and 20 dollars, and I remember the professor observing the rapid decay of these overpriced books somewhere around the the third lecture, and devoting class time towards telling us that we should alert the publisher of this phenomenon. It's a bit late for that, but I thought it was better late than never. In the end, I spent fifty cents on a hardcover edition from ebay published several decades ago, which someone had used an old newspaper clipping from the pornography/censorship trials as a bookmark. For fifty cents, that was a cool bonus. This new/old book held up, but I had to wrap the classroom approved text in a bandanna to keep from losing pages so that I could still participate in class discussions keyed to the study guide, and then use the fifty cent edition for actual coursework. Books are not at all what they used to be.

The reason for my rating is primarily the book's lack of progressive plot. While this stagnancy is probably due, in part, to the time-frame (one day) over which the book takes place and its stream-of-conscious-style points of view, any innovation attempted in Ulysses loses its appeal with the following consideration: a man hailed as a literary genius seems to have focused more on showing off his intellect (not unlike the Stephen in Ulysses) than on creating a readable and interesting piece of literature.

Fantastic edition. Clears up so many errors, easier to read this edition.

I bought this for a college course and really had to power through it because I just didn't find it engaging. I appreciate the skill, artistry, and creativity of the novel. However, it's not something I would have read for fun.
