5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew playing a lamb could be so much fun?
All the originality and fun that made Parappa the Rapper such a hit is evident in Um Jammer Lammy (with some minor improvements, even!). This game is a great attempt at making a truly innovative and unique game. Of course it's a sequel to Pa Rappa the Rapper and if you liked that first game this sequel is worth it, it adds some new features and makes for an interesting game. However that being said I found this game just too hard. I played it for about two weeks and then just gave up in frustration.

Before I start examining the game let me explain it a little since it's so different from any other game. Basically you are Jammer Lammy and you're trying to get to a concert in time to play with your band. To get there you have to play your guitar at a various set of places along the way. Each of these times you play your control paddle like it was a guitar trying to follow along with a bouncing ball like display. Of course you can improvise and change the style quite a bit and if you're music still works you should still get the same amount of points if not bonus points. If you beat a boss then you get an additional item to modify the sound of your guitar. There are also Vs. modes and Cooperative modes so you can play with a partner (either the computer or a real human).

Anyway, during the time I played the game I was able to get to the second to the last stage of the single player game and was also able to play and unlock several of the vs. stages, and I probably got around 20-30 hours of game time out of it, but it just got boring as I kept pounding my head up against the wall. My biggest complaint is that I couldn't tell why I was getting bad scores, there seemed to be almost no difference between the times I got good points and the times I got bad points, so I didn't even know how to improve.

Nonetheless this game has some great sound, and interesting graphics. The graphics are 2-dimensional but move 3-dimensionally so all of the characters look like paper cut outs. The sound is pretty good and despite having heard some of the songs dozens of times they never really started to irritate me. The control is pretty good I guess but as I mentioned above at times I couldn't understand why I was losing. Oh one final note of warning this game is very surreal there are things that simply don't make sense but it's kind of cool in a way too.

I'd recommend this game to anyone who played the first one, or anyone who likes a really challenging game. Moreover if you want to try an innovative puzzle game that is quite a bit different this is a good game to get.

Catchy and funny songs; amazing, wacky animation; challenging gameplay (you thought Parappa was tough?...you're in trouble); great replay value (the new head-to-head and cooperative play modes make this more of a party game than its predecessor); and lots of fun. My sister and I just love playing this game together. Perfect family game. Perfect party game. And you get to play as a LAMB, dangit. Who could ask for anything more?

For those who have played parapper and even those who haven't, this game is outrageous. Lammy is an amazing trip of bizarre lyrics and challenging gameplay! Unlocking the cool codes and new levels of parapper are the best part. Lock yourselves in for a few days and get jammin! The japanese translations and storyline exceed anything you might expect. Keep playing to get to a cool rating on each level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun game, but it's not for everyone, March 14, 2001

OK, first off, I'd like to say that Um Jammer Lammy is a great game. But ONLY for a select few. Some people might be turned off by the 2D graphics and cute characters, and it can be frustrating to time yourself while "playing" the guitar. At first I could only get through the levels on the Easy mode, but after a while everything gets easier.

The main concept is this: You are Lammy, Um Jammer Lammy, a guitar-playing lamb in a rock band called "Milkcan" (which also includes a bass-playing cat, a drumming dog, and a rapping onion). Throughout the whole game you are helping Lammy get out of sticky situations by playing the guitar (ex. putting out a fire, flying a plane). You are rated as awful, bad, good, or cool- and if you make it to "cool" you get to solo. You play the guitar by pressing different buttons on the control in time to the music, and there a guide telling you when to play. The songs are catchy and sometimes very funny, the animations are funny too but most of the time you are watching a scrolling guide on top of the screen, so this game is sometimes more fun for spectators.

Um Jammer Lammy has great music, good gameplay (esp. if you like puzzle games, or music for that matter), imaginative controls and, and the whole game is a cool concept (come on, a guitar playing lamb-- it's never been done before). There are hardly any music games out on PSX (as far as I know, PaRappa the Rapper and Um Jammer Lammy are the only ones, but I could be wrong). Overall, Um Jammer Lammy is a very fun game. If you're interested in a challenging game with catchy songs, a rock band made of up animals, bizarre scenarios, or just something different, then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning! Addictive!, December 4, 1999

What a fun and cool game this is. No description can truly convey the wacky addictive nature of the gameplay. Entirely well done. You just can't stop until you've gotten a "COOL" rating and unlocked all the secret gameplay modes. Tons of replay value and a great party game too! The US version is changed up a bit (rewrote the 'Hell' sequence) but it's not hacked up like some translations. Get it soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! But a note to PS2 Owners..., April 16, 2003
This review is from: Um Jammer Lammy [E] (Video Game)
This game was beyond excellent, I'm 32 and I love playing this. I've pulled it out at family gatherings and my cousins (ages 10-32) have a blast! Definately more challenging than Parappa, but also more fun in a lot of ways.
NOTE: For PS2 owners, buy a PS1 memory card, your PS2 will take it and you can only save PS1 games on a PS1 memory card. I usually keep one of each in the PS2 ports, since it doesn't matter where the card is to use it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Um Jammer Lammy will bring you to your knees, June 7, 2000

I really liked this sequel to Parappa the Rapper. It still has the paper-thin 2-D graphics but that's what gives the game a fun, cartoonish feel. But now you're slinging a guitar. This game will keep you on your toes for hours and your fingers on the buttons for eternity. It's a lot harder than Parappa but gives you more freedom. You have several effect peddles at your disposal which you use to change the sound of your guitar. Using different kinds and holding different buttons will gurantee a funky sound. If you're coordinated, buy this game. You'll need that dexterity! It's also a great party game. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm driving my boyfriend crazy..., May 2, 2000

The only way I can review this game is from a spectator's chair. I have more fun getting a buzz on and yaking at my boyfriend to get through the various levels than if I were actually in the game. I want the soundtrack so that while I am cleaning my home I can bounce around like that manic ewe. It is as if the designer got a hold of one my past acid trips, scored it, and let everyone else in on the fun. Though I haven't actually played, it seems challenging, which I guess is important. Whether playing or watching, this is the SH#$! Give me more.

Have you noticed that, while one person gives it 1 star and completed it in 1/2 hour, and one person spent weeks on it and gave 5? Well the answer is, this game is of limited appeal. If you're a musical fellow who loved parappa, found it quite hard, and is hungry for more, why not? If, however, you listen to the likes of Steps and Five, this game isn't for you.

What do I think? Well, the Graphic style is great, the music is reasonable and I can play it for hours. However, like most games, it ain't as good as the original.

If you like both Parappa and Um Jammer, see Vib Ribbon! The same guy, sense of humour, but with more......erm.......more. You get to play your own CD's and the disc music is......well, again, of limited appeal.
