I was really disappointed when I heard this record. It doesn't reflect the master that Joao Donato is. Half the tracks are piano and sax only, the rest has a drummer and a bass player. The tracks with the full band are by far the best.

The volume of the instruments is very uneven, in many parts the saxophone is way too loud and buries everybody else. Sometimes the piano and the sax are clearly out of sync with each other and out of tempo.

At the end of one track (track 5 or 6, I believe...) you can hear Joao Donato saying "Eu estava Nervoso", which means "I was nervous". It is beyond me why they chose to leave this comment on the CD.

Sadly, the whole record sounds rushed and not so well rehearsed. This is what I would expect from an album called "Alternate takes", "Unreleased takes", or something around these lines.

If you want to hear Joao Donato at his peak, I sugest Muito a Vontade, with Milton Banana on the drums and Tiao Neto on the bass. This was the same band that toured with Joao Gilberto in the sixties. The sound is creative, well blended, really genial. After more than 30 years, still sounds fresh.

I give 3 stars to this CD, out of respect to the great Master Joao Donato is and has always been.
