2000u out of box failure with no customer support,
By Ted Judd (Boise, Idaho) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Umax Astra 2000U Flatbed USB Scanner (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
I have tried repeatedly to get the 2000u to work to no avail. More calls to Customer Support than I can afford. After asking for a manager I was told my problems were common, if I wanted them to check out the scanner (since phone support could not figure it out) I had to send back the scanner at my expense and they would determine whether or not to repair, refurbish or replace the scanner. The final gotcha was that I had tried for over three months to solve the problems by phone and was now out of warranty and they refused to even look at it if I did send it back. Buy ANYthing else.

I was hoping to get a wonderful scanner to put pictures of my kids on our webpage. Pictures look blotchy and the OCR is horrible. I would suggest saving up for a higher end model.

Umax Astra 2000U,

The scanner has never scanned since new. I can understand a unit being shipped factory without firmware. Mistakes happen. But the Umax customer service is just plain lousy. The "Get them off the phone" and "don't answer e-mails" policy is an insult. I'll pay a little more and by an office HP.

Planned obsolecence,

The UMAX 2000U scanner itself is adequate, like so many scanners out there, and you'd expect this major name would offer better support. Made in 1999, it lacks the speed or image handling capabilities of its current competition. Features in, say, the current Epson models (which include smart-scanning an image, so you don't have to crop) are absent here.
Unfortunately, a scanner is often no better than its software, and UMAX has left Mac OS X users out in the dark. This scanner only works with Windows and OS 9; UMAX refuses to release a software update for Mac OS X. Moreover, apps like the esteemed Silverfast -- meant to fill in the software gap -- only make drivers for OS 9. In effect, by purchasing a UMAX scanner, you risk signing up for a product that will require you to buy new hardware or software down the line. Even its OS 9 software suffered from performance glitches, like impaired scanning with the free software updates. I've been forced to upgrade (but not to a UMAX product; I've learned my lesson). That's the reason so many of these are available on internet auctions and the like. Given its archaic performance even under Mac OS 9, you have to decide for yourself whether it's a good investment to get a product with impaired short and long-term usabiliy.

Never got it working....,

Horrible from day one. We could not get this to work, and I have installed dozens of scanners, not UMAX ofcourse. Tech support gave me a different reason everytime I called. I even did a fresh install of the OS to get it to work, still same error 1,010. Crummy product, crummy tech support, crummy experience, THE END...

A very good scanner for the money,

Scans very well, haven't any problems with it (although if you want to any serious editing of scanned photographs, use Photoshop instead of PhotoDeluxe). Overall, a great scanner for the home.

do not buy umax products... it is a total waste of money.most of the time the drivers and software provided by the company does not work with the operating system you are using. in order for it to work properly you must go to their web site and download a patch that supposed to fix the problem but instead the patch conflicts with other softeware such as camera software or even the operating system (one more thing the drivers and patches at their website are not free). I wrote to umax and they have never responded to any of the emails i have sent to them. I decided to call the support center and I was refered back to the website to download another patch. (very bad customer support)

I bought this scanner several years ago and have felt like I wasted my money. It did okay under Windows 98SE, but I had problems getting it to work under Windows 2000 Pro. I had to download the W2K software/drivers (none provided with the original CD), which took forever, of course. To make matters worse, I upgraded my computer last month from a PII 400 to an AMD XP 1800 with an ASUS A7S333 motherboard, 80 GB Maxtor hard drive, and 512 MB Kingston DDR RAM. I kept the same video card, DVD & CDRW drives, etc. I reloaded Windows 2000, loaded the software/drivers, and nothing happened. After trying for a week, I gave up. I tried to find updated drivers on the Umax site, but no, they wanted me to fork over [money]to ship a CD to me. Harrumph. So, it now sits on the floor and acts as a cat perch. That's about all it's worth.

Not compatible with Windows XP,
By The Fancy One "blackprincess" (Westchester County, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Umax Astra 2000U Flatbed USB Scanner (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
I got this scanner as a gift a few years ago, and it served my purposes then when my computer's operating system was Windows 98. It did a decent job scanning my pictures and I was satisfied with it. Since then I have gotten a new computer with Windows XP, but the Umax Astra 2000U isn't compatible with it. Windows XP isn't able to locate the TWAIN driver, it keeps saying there are missing dll's, trouble with the OCR...plus a lot of other things. I'm not a technical person, so I really couldn't tell you exactly what else was missing or whatever. You can get updated software for these problems, but only if you're willing to shell out money for a CD-ROM or download it from a link on their site. Either way it'll cost you. So even though I won't be throwing it out, I will certainly be shopping around for a better quality scanner that is compatible with XP. This one, I'll give it away to someone who is still using 98 SE, 98 or anything below it, but I doubt if I'll be able to find anyone who still does.
