This review is from: Umbo Weti: Tribute to Leon Thomas (Dig) (Audio CD)
Having seen Leon Thomas live during his life on several occasions I can say that this recording is a remarkable dedication to the man and his music. I have read the other reviews and have found them very interesting concerning this music, one reviewer spoke of not finding a spiritual connection in comparison to experiences with original music from Leon Thomas. I can only say how spiritual were you to begin with?,however concerning the music,Babatunde Lea is absolutely thrilling as a percussionist and very concentrated on details as an arranger and bandleader. Featuring the marvelous Patrice Rushen who has over the last few years returned to her Jazz roots(and after making millions having her early 80's pop music being sampled by hip-hops finest.. "Men in Black" from that Will Smith movie for example, and many longtime Jazz fans will recall her remarkable performance at the 1975 Monterey Jazz Festival where she thrilled thousands with her precise bop style.) is joined with Gary Brown on Bass, Ernie Watts on Saxophone and the very impressive Dwight Trible on vocals.Trible is perhaps the finest vocalist and student of that similiar voice technique that Leon Thomas explored that has been recorded in some time. His delivery on the Horace Silver piece "Song For My Father" captures the "essence" of Leon Thomas to the max! the man's(Trible) overall baritone control aludes to an artist who is a vocal natural, and definitely deserving wider recognition. The rhythm section sounds emotionally driven for this music. Patrice Rushen's classically, be-bop bred touch is akin to the finger tapping of another classiclly trained be-bop Piano cat who equally understood the aristic stylings of Brother Leon Thomas.... Lonnie Liston Smith!. While Ernie Watts, a twice Grammy winner and master saxophonist known for his studio work(reportedly the saxophonist on the Rolling Stones "waiting on a Friend" from '81) and from his work with Frank Zappa and Cannonball Adderley delivers a powerful performance on "The Creator has a Master Plan" and "Cousin Mary" he does'nt scream like Pharoah(but then again who does?,and does even Pharoah scream like Pharoah anymore?),however he does it his way, which is cool since sweet improvisation rules the way! Babatunde Lea is the complete percussionist, alongside Bay area Bassist Gary Brown they create a pulsating heartbeat of sound that pays homage to Leon Thomas from his Count Basie big-band roots towards his avante garde Impulse-Flying Dutchman latter years. After reading the other reviews I wanted to write a more informative review from a Jazz musician&collector point of view;the other reviews dont get deep enough into the soul of this music, and seem to be written by folks who expect a dedication performance to solely recreate/mimick the work of the artist in mention, and not stir compassion for the artist in rememberance, with elements of improvisation and skillful technique. This 2-cd set is worth the listening experience, not simply bacause it pays homage to the late/great Leon Thomas who was a fine artist&vocalist in his own time, but also because Babantunde Lea has assembled a fine ensemble that performs some really great Jazz caught on tape!!

I was looking for the same quality and spiritual lift that I get from Leon's music but it didn't hit me like that. I listened to it a couple of times and sat it on the pile of things I may try again latter. Maybe I just had too high of an expectation. It sounded like some friends got together one afternoon, thought about the great music Brother Leon Thomas blessed us with, and just started jamming. The CD did get to me on time and in perfect condition.
