Product Description

Color: Silver | Size: Large

For an ultra-minimal look, the Conceal bookshelf from Umbra mounts to the wall and becomes invisible behind a stack of books, giving the books the appearance of floating in mid-air. Attach the sturdy, L-shaped shelf to the wall with the included mounting hardware and slide one book onto the ledge so that the ledge is sandwiched between the book's cover and pages. Secure the cover in place using the integrated clips beneath the ledge. Stack up to 15-pound (or 8-inch) of medium to large books on top of the first book until the shelf is obscured from view. Conceal is constructed of strong, powder-coated steel and is available in two finishes. This model measures 5-1/2 by 7 by 6-1/2-inch. Also available is a smaller size for small books and a wider model that holds two stacks side by side. The patented design by Miron Lior is the winner of many design awards including the Umbra Pratt Design Competition. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this item is donated to the Pratt Institute School of Art and Design. Brought to you by Umbra - the worldwide leader in innovative, casual, contemporary, affordable design for the home.

From the Manufacturer

Umbra Conceal Book Shelf

For a fresh, ultra-minimal look, the Conceal bookshelf from Umbra mounts to the wall and becomes invisible behind a stack of books, giving the books the appearance of floating in mid-air.

Easy Installation

Step 1

Attach the sturdy, L-shaped steel Conceal Shelf to the wall with the included mounting hardware.

Step 2

Place the first book so that the shelf ledge is between the pages and the back cover, using the two hooks underneath to hold the back cover in place.

Step 3

Stack additional books on top of the first book until the Conceal Shelf is hidden from view. This gives the stack of books a floating appearance.

Shelf Capacity

Available in two sizes, the Large Shelf holds up to 20 pounds of medium to large books; the Small Shelf holds up to 15 pounds of small to medium books.

Award-Winning Design

The Conceal Shelf, designed by Miron Lior, is a winner of the annual Umbra-Pratt Institute Design Competition. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of this product are donated to the Pratt Institute School of Design in New York City.

Each year, students of the Pratt Institute's Industrial Design program are invited to submit their designs to a panel of judges, who award the products that best reflect the Umbra design sensibility and incorporate originality, wit and manufacture-ability.

Winning designs are considered for manufacture and distribution by Umbra. If the design is put into production, the student and the Pratt Institute receive a portion of the proceeds from the product's sales.

“Design is at the center of our business at Umbra. We rely on bright new designers to fuel our creative growth. We are honored to be able to work with distinguished design schools like Pratt and talented new design graduates.” -- Paul Rowan, Co-Founder, Umbra

We bought 6 of these shelves for our living room that has a contemporary/industrial feel. We have been very happy with them! They look great, hold a good amount of books and we have received may compliments. The books really do look like they're floating on the wall. They hold about 10-15 books for us. They could probably hold a couple more. No stud necessary when installing. Installing very easy.

I attached my own pictures in the "customer images."

I put a few up in my small living room next to my TV and a IKEA wall-shelf. It looks great and it does hold up a lot. But how much does it hold up? That also depends on your books.

One tip: To know when to stop piling more books on, use your hand and push down from the top a little bit. If it starts to shake and feels quite heavy, it is time to stop and leave it at that.

This is a really great idea for decorating and look great. I bought a couple and may buy more.

Likes
* It can really dress up a drab wall. Much more eye catching that just a bookshelf or photo.
* It's easy to install. Just need 3 screws.

Dislikes
* You have to be choosey with the type of books used. The ones I planned to use were too deep and too heavy. The whole thing sagged. The pictures on the Umbra site show some with a whole stack of books. I wasn't able to get more than a couple of hardcover books on it, without the sagging occurring. Wish they had used slightly thicker gauge metal. For the price charged, they could afford it.
* The single version has 2 mounting holes one above another, so it offers more support. In this double version, it has 3 holes, just slightly above the shelf, in a horizontal row. This might limit the weight bearing capacity.
* The bottom support book only provides support if other books provide weight on the wall side. It also assumes the very small support "hooks" stay engaged on the book cover. If a guest decides to pull a book down to look at it, it is very likely the whole stack will come tumbling down. This should be considered a decorative solution, not a way to store books you will frequently use. Be ready to yell "don't touch those" if you seem someone reaching for them. I would not put anything breakable below these.

Despite some gripes I really like these and they look great on the wall. I think there are some things they could do to improve them, but overall I'm satisfied. I'm recommending them.

I bought this for easy access to commonly used reference books for my home office. I chose the large shelf expecting that it would hold seven or eight fairly large garden books (9 x 11 x 3/4" on average). I've found that the little shelf will hold 5 of these books (4" total height, including the base book) securely, 6 and the shelf flexes some, and any more and it feels overloaded. A bit more thickness in the steel would have made the shelf considerably stiffer and stronger. The image here on Amazon shows a shelf with 9 books (including the unusable base book). Maybe that load would be possible given the modest size of the books and the way they are stacked with decreasing perimeter-size toward the top (strength of an "L" shaped shelf is near the wall).

For larger books the load capacity of the shelf is quite limited, though it still works for my needs. I would recommend buying the smaller shelf at 2/3 the price of the large version as I doubt that the large holds anymore weight and probably really accomodates little more size, if any, because of the way the shelf holds the base book.

My shelf came with a minor paint defect and I think the large shelf is a little pricy at $16, though it is nicely packaged.

All in all, it's a simple, clean-looking little shelf that provides a very compact, inexpensive, and easily-installed solution for limited capacity book-holding.

i love love love these shelves. i ordered a bunch at the same time. i got 5 little ones and 2 large ones. I had a hard time finding a 2 books that would fit the large ones. you need a book that is at least 7-8 inches wide. i would have stuck with the smaller size had i known. still very happy with them though.

I sceptically bought two to put beside a kitchen window for small plants, and now I own at least a dozen and am buying more. These little delights really do everything the ad says. I was able to put my teacher books above my desk and printer area, freeing up room for my sewing machine by ditching a bookcase. They hold the weight they say they will. My only advise is to buy molly bolts that you know will hold a certain weight just to be on the safe side. I bought ones that each hold 65 pounds, and now I never worry when a grandchild loads down a shelf. This little invisible shelves get tons of attention from my guests. They are quite a conversation piece.

I posted 2 pictures above of the shelves on my wall (4 shelves). I purchased 2 smaller ones and 2 of these Large ones. According to the packaging you can stack up to 20 lbs with no height limit on the large. I stacked 10 hard cover books and didn't come near that 20 lbs. When it comes to the larger one I will tell you that there is a minimum book depth requirement of 7.5 inches. I have a lot of hard cover books, but only 1 that was deep enough to use so I had to borrow one of my children's books for the time being. Another point to make is that they MUST be screwed into a stud in your wall. Do not try to skip this and just put them anywhere.

Definitely worth getting and I'm ordering more right now. I love them and they are original, something different to decorate with. I have one set up as my Library book shelf. LOVE IT!
