5.0 out of 5 stars Great Trash Can --- Metal Look for Plastic Price
I've had 2 of these in my kitchen for 3 months and love them. They look great --- very nice satin metal look. The surface doesn't capture fingerprints like many metal cans. We're tough on a lot of our things and these I think will hold up better than metal cans that can dent / scratch. We use one for trash and the other for recyclables.

They are in front of...

I purchased this garbage because I wanted a stainless steel look without having to pay over $100. Although the garbage looks pretty good (it's plastic with a faux nickel finish) and looked good in my kitchen, it didn't function particularly well. Because it's so light-weight, it moved around every time i pressed on the foot pedal and it would never stay in the same place. You also can't place it too close to a wall because when the top opens, it pushed against the wall, making it move even more and ended up leaving black scuff marks on my wall. All in all, it looks great for the price, but if you want a functional sturdy garbage that stays in place when you use it, this is not the one.

2.0 out of 5 stars bad design, November 16, 2010

I can't understand how some products are put out on the market, is it that once they make them and realize they do not work, they still put it out to sell them and make a profit at least. I mean this trash can looks real good, but is not functional, the shape of the lever at the bottom where you step to open the top lid is designed in a way that when you step on it, the trash can slides back, plus the can is very light. They could've done better. I'm dissapointed.

They are in front of a wall so we don't have as much movement problem as some others have had. But a few strip of rubber tape on the bottom do help keep them in place. Could add some weight (brick?) in the bottom. I'm happy they were so light that shipping costs were reasonable.

Good product. Nice price. Beautiful and seems nice quality too. The only bad aspect is that the base is not heavy enough and sometimes you step on it to open and it shakes a little bit. But a good purchase overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but first shipment was damaged., May 4, 2011

Wanted to get our trash can out of the pantry (inconvenient) into the kitchen proper, but wanted a barrel that was at least more attractive than a white plastic bin. This one is nice. It's plastic, so it will move around if you don't have it against a wall. But it looks clean and nice, works fine, and my kids can throw away their own trash much more easily.

PS With regards to the damage - first shipment included a badly cracked up bin. But Amazon's customer service was GREAT. Next one came perfectly, but with the promise of a full refund if it, too, was damaged.

Overall, glad with the purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should Be Perfect & Its Not, November 23, 2011

UPDATE-
This thing is one of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever bought, no pun intended. I received this can mid-September. Its now December and the can is broken. I might as well have set fire to the money I spent on this piece of junk for all the good it did me. I noticed that the step-pedal started to feel loose, or as if it were not depressing completely. Now it doesn't work at all. I looked inside the can and saw a hole in the bottom of the unit, and two cracks as well, on the center component. The inside center floor of the can is raised and shaped somewhat like an upside down U. This is where the hole and the cracks are, and I would bet this is why the step-pedal no longer works. My disabled husband and I are the only people who use this can, and no, we don't take out our frustrations upon it. We aren't rounding up the neighborhood children for a game of Kick The Polypropylene Can. We don't use it as a basketball hoop to practice our dunk shots using beer bottles, know what I'm saying? TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!

********************************************************************************
For $40 bucks, this trash can should be perfect and its not. I don't normally spend $40 for a kitchen trash can, but all the local stores were selling black cans. Yuck! I'm not a bachelor, and I don't want some big, ugly black thing in my kitchen, especially when all my appliances are white. Couldn't find a white step can to suit my needs so I purchased this faux stainless steel can. Within a month of owning it, there were scratches on the lid. Now there are only two adults in my household, no children, no pets. I've never had a trash can that scratched so easily and quickly. And as others have noted, the trash can is not all that stable and moves about on the floor. I have mine right up against the wall and still have issues with this. It will slide to the left or right, but what it really does is its gets pushed up against the wall-from use-that it starts to tip forward. The base of the can needs something to keep it stable and firmly in place. It does look nice, it is easy to clean and the step at the base which opens the lid is nice and wide. This can needs tweaking though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality: Umbra Step Bin / Recycler recycling BIN, September 20, 2011
This review is from: Umbra Metalla 12-Gallon Polypropylene Step Can, Nickel (Kitchen)
The Umbra Step Bin / Recycler recycling bin :
Wish I'd Checked out Amazon.com - as these reviews dont appear on Amazon UK where this Trash can is called a Bin !
Yes, the silver colour match is perfect for our decor & more importantly in a tiny kitchen it fits into the allocated space, BUT I was VERY disappointed with the value for money.
However - it was way, way, over-priced for a plastic bin!
It is merely a large (top heavy) plastic pedal bin, with a plastic bar to hold TWO bin liners instead of ONE.
The "flip" on the large lid isn't taken into account when measurements are given (on the box) - when it's open it's deeper than described - luckily it JUST fit into the allocated gap!
Cheap store bins at a fraction of this price could/should consider adapting in a similar way.
If all I'm paying for is the divider bar & bin-liner hold-down ring, then the price difference isn't worth it - sorry!
Similar function higher quality stainless steel bins are superior with their twin bin inserts (but, in my case, they're sadly too big)!

2.0 out of 5 stars Arrived broken, pretty flimsy, September 8, 2011

The trash can is a very thin polypropylene. When it arrived, the lid was cracked, and it wasn't particularly surprising, due to the material thickness. I would suggest that if you want to stainless steel look trash can, it would be better to look for a metal one. This plastic one is not a good deal.

Not able to find a suitable product in local stores that you could open without using your hands. Excellent product which replaces a plastic model.
