3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
This book was a pretty good adaptation of the video game. I wish the author had been a bit more inventive in novelizing it, however the game has a good narrative structure to begin with. At least it isn't near as awkward a translation from game to novel as Doom. I was entertained reading The Umbrella Conspiracy and plan to read the rest of the novels. I'm curious...

4.0 out of 5 stars Review, May 13, 2001

S. D. Perry's Resident Evil, The Umbrella Conspiracy was a great book. If you liked the game, you'll love the book. It handles the action and plot well and describes each persons perspective of the adventure extremely well. It's written from multiple characters points of view with obvious exaggeration to increase the intensity of the horror. Flashbacks occur during the conflicts with the zombies to show the personalities of the characters that are trying to survive. Foreshadowing was another literary device that Perry uses in this novel to keep the readers interested and full of suspense. A negative about this book is that Perry expects the reader to know the environment, mood, and origin of each character in this novel from playing the game so would make the story difficult to follow if you have never played the game. This story follows the adventure of a special task force referred to as S.T.A.R.S. They have been called in to investigate mysterious happenings in an old abandoned mansion, or at least they think it is abandoned. Can they escape this mansion and survive; you'll have to read this book to find out. If you like scary books, you'll be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, April 2, 2000
By A Customer
I wasn't sure how well Perry could write this book, seeing how it has two different story lines for Chris and Jill. Despite this Perry has created a masterpiece. She has actually run both storylines in parrallel with each other. I am a big fan of Resident Evil and have got all the games so far and have only just ventured into the books. This is the first one I have read, I got it on a saturday and started reading it the second I got home and could not stop reading it, I finished the whole thing in the one day. This book handels the action and the plot well, it also describes each persons perspective of the adventure very well. If you've played the game and loved it, this book is a must, along with the rest of the series I will be getting very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow., September 4, 2000

At first I was suspicious of a novelized version of the Resident Evil video game. The game's story line was a little cheesy in the first place. The price looked like a bargain, so I decided to give it a go. It was the greatest decision I believe I've ever made. The Umbrella Conspiracy tells the tale of the orignal Resident Evil video game. In case your not a fan of the series, Raccoon City has a little, teansy, weansy problem - people go missing for days after venturing into the hills, and when they're found, it isn't a pretty site. Victims....are apparently eaten. Finally, Police Chief Irons decides to send in the cavalry - S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactis and Rescue Squad). But failure seems to surround the entire mission... Minutes after the Bravo team is launched, a distress signal is recieved from their helicopter. Taking matters into his own hands, Albert Wesker, the Alpha team leader, takes his own assembled men into the action. As the story continues on, you slowly begin to learn the personalities/backgrounds of the team members, such as -

Jill Valentine - an ex-thief, she is a master of picking locks.

Chris Redfield - an excellent marksman that seems very attached to his comrades.

Barry Burton - a family man, he prefers a Colt .45 in combat.

I thought it was simply amazing that Perry managed to tie the crew in so well. Everything is in the game. Whether you play it before or after reading this book, it will still leave a lasting impression. BUY THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great telling of the original video game, July 22, 2003
The Umbrella Conspiracy is the first in a series of adaptations of the popular Capcom survival horror video game series written by S.D. Perry. Fans of the first game will be pleased to find that this book is a near perfect re-telling of the storyline in the first Resident Evil video game as we are introduced to Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Albert Wesker, and the rest of the first game's characters as we see them thrust into the battle for their lives against a horde of zombies, mutated dgos, hunters, and plenty more grisly creatures while trying to escape the infamous secluded mansion. Perry's storytelling adds nearly the same degree of suspense that the game featured. and her character development of the characters actually makes the reader care about what happens to them; something the game didn't do. All in all, if you've never read any of Perry's Resident Evil books but are a fan of the game series, then I strongly suggest picking this, and the following books, up.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read!, August 26, 2003
By A Customer
Resident Evil is a wonderful book; it's scary, entertaining, and definitely a good read. When I saw it on this website, I immediately wanted to read it. So, I went to the local bookstore and purchased it. I finished it in a week and a half, and I loved it. My favorite characters were Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, Barry Burton, and Rebecca Chambers. I hated Wesker! He was so mean!

Well, let me tell you why this book is so great. I was scared reading it, getting scared every time S.D. Perry described a zombie. When Jill fought a Hunter, I was completely amazed and impressed by Mrs. Perry's writing. I think she is a great author and described this first video game great. And I am so glad that she wrote a whole series of them for everyone to read.

If you're a fan of anything Resident Evil related (video game, comic book, etc.) except for the movie, then you will love this series of books. I know I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to Enter a World of Survival Horror, April 8, 2003

As the story begins you read about a recent string of murders, in the small mountain community of Raccoon city. To investigate the murders the police force deployed the S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Squad) alpha team. After a few days of radio silence from the alpha team the second half of S.T.A.R.S., the bravo team, is sent in. After arriving at the last reported position of the alpha team, the bravo team is attacked by "inhuman" creatures. The surviving members seek shelter in a near by mansion, but after they get a chance to regroup the situation only gets worse from there.
This was a great book and very well written. The setting comes to the reader as being very real and vivid, and that characters are described in great detail. Although basing a book off of a video game might be a challenge to some, S.D. Perry managed it perfectly. She kept the feel of the book the same as it was in the game. She keeps you guessing, and makes you want to read more. Using mysterious tones she never gives away the whole story at once and saves the answers to the riddles for the very end. This was a great multi media novel, and a great book all by it self. This is a great book for fans of mystery and a must read for fans of the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Resident Evil The Umbrella Conspiracy, January 5, 2000
A must read for anyone who loves mystery suspence and gore. If you haven't played the game it makes the book that more enjoyable. If you have played the game you will find it is a bit predictable, however it is still worth the read because of the amazing detail.

I have as of yet, never played the video game RESIDENT EVIL. However, I plan to do so. The reason I picked up and bought THE UMBRELLA CONSPIRACY was because after watching the RESIDENT EVIL movie my interest in the series was piqued. So, I picked up this book to get a better understanding about the series and video games. I found the book to be rather good; it didn't pretend to be anything more than it was and kept me interested. I read the book in about a days time and am looking forward to reading other books in the series and to playing the video games. There is some element of horror and gore, but the book reads more like an action adventure/mystery than a horror story. A great read for any Resident Evil fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars My good'ol review, June 10, 2002

Fireknight777 (Tinley Park, IL) - See all my reviews
First off, this was a good book. Dont think that it will (be bad) from the movie. This follows the Playstation version quite well. S.D. Perry did a good job writing this. My applause to her. This book did very well with detail. Very nice with giving the story a twist in the beginning before the characters entered the mansion. In some spots it seemed that it was alittle slow with talking. But it still held it very well and kept flowing. It also adds a new perspective to how the characters felt in the ordeal that you could not tell from the video game. This book also gave very good detail to how the mansion layout was. It made it very easy in some parts to envision the building. There was also great detail to how the zombies and other evil geneticly altered creatures were detailed. Good description to how they died. :-) (Not a book I would let a 8-year old read). Also in the end it made the battle between Tyrant and the other S.T.A.R.S. members almost an exact from the game. When they were on the helipad it was described how they fought the giant mutant. I was able to envision how they were set on the helipad and how they were facing and fighting the monster. Good detail to how it was finaly put to rest when Brad Vickers in the circling chopper overhead droped the rocket launcher to Jill Valentine to put down Tyrant for good. Very good reading in my opinion. I recomend this book to any fan of the Resident Evil games. I think this book does deserve the 5 star rating...

5.0 out of 5 stars Resident Evil: U.C. Based of the Org. best-selling game, December 19, 2000
If you thought Resident Evil the game was a big sucsess, you need to read the best book i have read in a long time. This book is extremely detailed in every way with the game. It has all the main char. from the game including Chris, Rebecca, Barry, Jill, Joseph, Brad, and Capt. Albert Wesker in the same friendly enviroment, Racoon City. Pretty much this book is like playing the game without controllers and mind-melding your brain to a TV screen all day. I would read this book again and would porbabaly enjoy it just as much. I am currently Reading the 2nd novel; "Caliban Cove" by the same great author who wrote the first book. If you never heard of Resident Evil; then you got to rent the game or read the book. and if you enjoy the book and game, be sure not to miss the new RE movie coming around Halloween 2001.
