great trombone sound, smooth jazz and soloing by urbie,
This review is from: Umpteen Trombones (Audio CD)
yes, this music is pop, elevatorish, but the sound of 21 trombones with 4 on each part and urbie, is a great sound.
Urbie's solos are smooth, always fitting the music, and varied. His sound is sound transforms from brash in your face to smooth and like butter. his fast runs are always effortless. if you just love the trombone sound and great solos i highly recommend this cd.

21 Fabulous Trombones,

This is a one of a kind album. Fantastic! However, the original release date of 1987 is incorrect. I bought the album back in the mid to late 1960's.

21 of the best Trombones with a rhythm section,

Urbie Green and the rest of the 21 trombones, some of which are well known, are absolutely awesome. Their harmony is very rich starting with multiple bass trombones continuing up to the stratosphere on some tunes. Some trumpet players mistakenly think that the high notes are too high to be made by trombones. Their musicianship and interpretation are very stylish. The variety of styles from tune to tune is enjoyable. The arrangements are very interesting.

I have been an Urbie Green fan for decades since I first discovered him as a slide trombone player! My first teacher Camille Verdier did not like us speaking about those cats! When I first discovered Bill Watrous in the late 70s it was even worse! Remember the Manhattan Wild Refuge? I started practicing 10 hours a day when I first heard Bill Watrous and what could be done on a slide trombone! Those cats were around, idols and fascinating! When I first "landed" in New York Manhattan the first thing I did was looking for Urbie's fine recordings and lo and behold! There did I find them in the Big Apple waiting for me!
Actually 2 former 21 trombones were called into project by Urbie Green: Urbie Green and Twenty of the "World's Greatest" Project Total Sound Reference PR 5014 SD and the second one Urbie Green and Twenty of the "World Greatest" Project Total Sound Reference PR 5024 SD; I hold both copies in my hands right now "lucky me"; those are treasures probably worth a fortune for jazz fanatics like me! I recommend the suave, sound melting, one voice amazing blend of those 2 incredible recordings! I hope Project digitalizes those older recordings in order to make them available to Trombone Jazz fans like me again! Let's wait and see if it ever comes out again! Kind Regards : Bruno Pierre Gebarski Hamburg Germany

Unbelieveable Sounds from 21 Glorious Trombonists,
This review is from: Umpteen Trombones (Audio CD)
If you could gather Urby Green, Kai Winding, Milt Berhardt,
Lou McGarrity, J.J.Johnson, Buddy Morrow and Will Bradley+ ++Boocoodles of the same ilk of all-star trombonists into one recording session; Pass out arrangements from old Stan Kenton days, Tommy Dorsey or Les Brown's Band-of Re-known. Next spice into that mix, Urby Green plus two or three others as soloists! I picked Kai Winding & Lou McGarrity of Arthur Godfrey fame, all joined in four-part harmony steamimg, in-syle of 1950's version of "Stardust, What Now My Love, Without A Song, Stars Fell Over Alabama, and You Only Live Twice," I never get tired of playing in the car Stereo on trips! Hopefully it is still in-print by Project-3 Records on 200 W. 57th Street in NYC! From a happier old trombone player of the 1950's...Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

This album is the benchmark to which all other trombone ensembles aspire to reach. To this day, few have reached its shadow. Thick sound, and harmony that melts in your mouth. A staple in any jazz collection. On a personal note, I wonder how many children were conceived while this album was playing
