Truly Uplifting and Amazing,

I listen to many different styles of music, so I know good music when I hear it. This is pure certified GOOD music. This lady is extremely talented and has an innate ability to tap into the inspiration of the cosmos. This offering is different from her last only in that there are more songs that run over the 2 or 3 minute mark which is great!
The subject matter of her songs is not the typical "I love you baby" crap that you hear from so many soul artists. She has true substance often singing about something uplifting or socially relevant. Subject matter on this disc ranges from taking care of one's children to being thankful for life to lifting oneself from the doldrums to accepting death to inspiring young freedom fighters and so on. Musically, she's amazing in that she plays all her own instruments and makes it sound 10 times better than someone sampling with an mpc. She has awesome musicality... the way the crafts songs, her arrangements.. everything. I can't say enough good things about this woman and her music. Overall, I really appreciate her positivity. This is one purchase that won't let you down.... as a matter of fact, it'll lift you up!

Georgia has returned with another beautiful peace offering. No BLING! Beats, nice chords, unexpected chords and sounds, fonk and really positive messages. She (and Dudley Perkins) follows the beat of her own drummer (THANK GOD). It's refreshing for me to hear a style of music I grew listening to prosper, experiment and stay true at the same time.

MJ,

I could not wait for Georgia Anne Muldrow to put out another CD, so when I saw Eagle Nebula's Cosmic Headphones (produced by Georgia Anne)I was quite satisfied and could not wait for GAM to put out her own CD. So when Georgia Anne Muldrow Presents... Ms. One (CD with various artists and GAM production) came out, I was very pleased again and thought it will be a while before GAM drops another CD. To my surprise GAM has put out yet another CD. Like Olesi: Fragements of an Earth, Umsindo is an excellent CD and diplays the raw and multitalent of Georgia Anne Muldrow. Great production, awesome beats, powerful lyrics and vocals. My favorite song, "Roses". I agree with the other review, you can't go wrong with GAM or the almighty funkmaster Dudley Perkins!

ok. this is like an old-school hiphop album from the future.
relentless percussion, staggered drumbeats, buzzy synths, tied together with a deep, soulful vibe. muldrow could be the daughter of miles davis, madlib's kid sister. sly stone, 60's soul, 70's funk; sun ra's niece? there's so much cookie-cutter music out there, it's always a treat to discover the adventurous artists. this is a great album, and highly (literally) recommended.

Georgia Anne keeps bringin' us that blissful, funked-out stoned soul. I love her lyrics. She says what she truly feels and that comes thru in the brilliant drums and lovely melodies.

African Rhythm times Funk squared,

The thing that I love about Georgia is that when she sings, you know it's her and no one else. She just has this way of floating about notes that's so eccentric yet so poignant and undeniably fly at the same time. To me, Ms. Muldrow often sings as if she's the missing instrument in a basement jazz jam session.
Umsindo is the most recent album released by the enigmatic Muldrow. I've been waiting for it ever since I heard the strikingly beautiful "Roses" last year. Surprisingly, while that track is included on this release, the rest of the album is actually quite different. To me, Umsindo sonically sounds more like the spiritual successor to her side project, Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan Five or her 2007 G&D release with soulmate Dudley Perkins. The result is a very strong african rhythm vibe mixed in with a healthy dose of certified cosmic funk. Lyrically, Ms. Muldrow has never been a one-trick pony. The same holds true with Umsindo. As usual, whatever is on her mind, Georgia sings it freely and with utmost conviction. This is a very strong release from a very busy artist in 2009; Umsindo being the second of at least three releases scheduled for the year. While in my opinion, this album doesn't quite reach the melodic explosions heard in Worthnothings and Olesi, this is a very strong effort and new material by Muldrow is and always will be eagerly anticipated by me. Anything released my her is a breath of fresh air. I wanted to lastly mention that Ms. Muldrow's music sometimes isn't the most easily accessible. For those unfamiliar with this ingenious artist, I think a great introduction into her world would be her phenomenal Worthnothings EP - an album that was literally the soundtrack of my senior year of college. |
