Biography

In 2011, Ladysmith Black Mambazo – led by founder and front man Joseph Shabalala – celebrates forty-five years of joyous and uplifting music that marries the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. In those years, the a cappella vocal group has created a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a… Read more in Amazon's Ladysmith Black Mambazo Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

Somewhat more sober but no less hypnotic, warm, and churchlike than other Ladysmith albums, this change of pace (released in 1988 but recorded just prior to their Paul Simon collaboration Graceland) consists entirely of devout Christian songs sung in Zulu (translations provided). Extended melodic lines reminiscent of Christian hymns alternate with pulsating refrains that gently echo jubilee gospel choirs--and every song ends with a blissful amen or hallelujah. Umthombo's choral harmonies, less contrapuntal than Ladysmith's usual euphonic textures, showcase the subtle rhythmic complexities--the turn-on-a-dime transitions and nearly unnoticed tension--of Joseph Shambala's divine arrangements. --Richard Gehr

Product Description

The fourth release from the South African supergroup on Shanachie, this album has much of the a cappella work that listeners have become used to when looking for a Ladysmith Black Mambazo album. The songs are entirely devotional Christian hymns to Jesus, breaking away a bit from the usual mix, but not terribly so. As is always the case with Ladysmith albums, the highlight is the vocal harmony work that goes into it. This is the premier group for Zulu singing styles and on each album they show off why they're the premiers. Shabalala and his bandmates provide a stunning look at some relatively simple lyrical works that are ornamented through their harmonic work to become a cappella masterpieces. Some Ladysmith albums are more energetic than this one, but whether a low energy level is a good or bad thing is a case left to the listener's aesthetics. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide
