Book Description

August 2008
How many things does your church do just because that's the way it's always been done? Does your congregation value tradition over passion and stability over creativity? If so, it's time to unLearn. Leading congregations into a dynamic and prophetic future requires unLearning what you thought you knew about the church, leadership, and life. Pastor Michael Slaughter casts a vision for innovative and authentic congregations, and for the kind of leadership that can bring congregations to greater vitality and impact in today's postmodern culture. Readers will be challenged to gaze boldly beyond franchised church models to a dynamic embodiment of God's unique vision for each leader and each congregation.  UnLearning congregations embrace new media and cultural trends, value transformation over information, and create a safe space for the tough and unanswerable questions of life. These are churches that lovingly dare to shoulder spiritual and prophetic leadership in our rapidly changing culture, re-articulating God's ancient purposes to create high-tech, high-touch environments in which people can become radical followers of Jesus Christ.
Informed by Slaughter's thirty years of leadership at the innovative and mission-driven Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church, UnLearning Church offers readers guidance and insight into setting aside old identities, old expectations, and old ways of “doing church,” and inspires readers with examples of congregations already living out their mission to be creative and outwardly-focused communities of faith.  Michael Slaughter is Lead Pastor and Chief Dreamer of Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church in Tipp City, Ohio. Appointed to the small country church in 1979, Mike saw the potential for a teaching church that would transform its community and the lives of people across the globe. Ginghamsburg has grown under his three decades of leadership from 90 worshippers a week to over 5,000. His other books include Spiritual Entrepreneurs, Out On the Edge, Real Followers, UnLearning Church, and Money Matters.

About the Author

Mike Slaughter, lead pastor at Ginghamsburg Church, is the three-decade dreamer of Ginghamsburg Church and spiritual entrepreneur of ministry marketplace innovations. His life-long passion to reach the lost and set the oppressed free has made him a tireless and leading advocate for the displaced children, womenand men of Darfur, Sudan, named by the U.N. as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.  Under Mike’s leadership, Ginghamsburg Church has become known as an early innovator of small group ministry, the Church “media reformation” and cyberministry, with the Ginghamsburg website averaging 50,000 visits monthly from around the world.  Since initiating The Sudan Project in January 2005, Ginghamsburg has invested over $5 million into humanitarian relief in Darfur.  The resultant agricultural project, child development program and safe water initiative are expanding to reach a quarter of a million Sudanese refugees and villagers.  As a mentor, Mike travels globally to speak and use his “gift of irritation” to equip ministry leaders to minimize brick and maximize mission so that they may fully deploy the mission of Jesus into the world. Mike is the author of multiple books for church leaders including Change the WorldSpiritual EntrepreneursReal FollowersMomentum for LifeUnLearning Church, and Upside Living in a Downside Economy.  For more information about Mike, visit www.mikeslaughter.com

This is a great book for the post-modern church. We all fall into bad habits and tend to stick with the ways of the past. Mike Slaughter wants us to break free and do church in new and innovative ways that reach differing pockets of society that the "church" typically overlooks. This book is a must read for every pastor and church-goer. I highly recommend this book. I know it led me to rethink what I am doing in my congregation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration from a spiritual visionary, April 1, 2010

Michael Slaughter, unLearning Church: Just When You Thought You Had Leadership All Figured Out (Loveland: Group, 2002)

Slaughter is the chief dreamer at Ginghamsburg Church, a catalyst for change among the new [...] style group of unique churches emerging in North America. Rather than duplicating church-growth models of last century, he champions leaving behind old labels, engaging the senses with technology and multimedia, allowing grace-space for paradox and hard questions, building a culture of innovation, focusing on those not yet at the table and leading from your example and passion. He suggests emerging churches will be built not by CEO pastors but spiritual visionaries who listen to God, paint a future full of promise, and empower laypeople for service. From eyes wide shut to arms wide open, he says we have a lot to unlearn and a lot to learn about radically demonstrating the love of Jesus in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars When something is not working, Unlearn it, December 3, 2011

This review is from: UnLearning Church: New Edition (Paperback)
Church as we know it is not working, yet we continue to do the same thing in the same way and expect to get different results. Some call that the definition of insanity, I call it the Epidemy of Stupidity. Either way, why continue to do something that is not working. People often say they don't like change, but change happens. Do you still have an outhouse at Your house? Do you drive a car, have a microwave? Change is good when it improves a situation. Mike Slaughter is an innovator when it comes to how to Do church and how Not to do church. I have had the opportunity to live in the area where Mike Slaughter has grown a church. Although I have never been a member of Ginghamsburg Church, as I belonged to other churches or have been a Pastor in another church, I have participated in the life of the church from time to time. To grow the church, people needed to be grown into relationship with God. This did not occur overnight. Fifteen years ago, my kids and I attended regularly on Saturday night while continuing at our own church on Sundays. Mike preached on accountability. Almost every week that theme was in the midst of worship. He was preparing people for change. Now he has people realizing that "Christmas is Not YOUR Birthday" which is another great book by this author. This church has changed many lives for the kingdom of God. Many examples of how churches Unlearned church are given in this book. I highly recommend this book.
