Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A former two-term Republican representative for New York's Westchester County, DioGuardi blows the whistle on Congress for what he cites as grossly inept and deceitful fiscal practices. In a slim but meaty volume, he charges that congressional taxing, spending and guaranteeing combine with outrageous personal perks, deals and legal exemptions to endanger "the very soul of American democracy." He cites and explains such gimmicks as off-budget scams (e.g. the disastrous S & L bailouts) and reconciliation bills so huge no one reads them before voting, by which the public's money is squandered. Suggesting that members of Congress use their plastic voting cards like credit cards tapping unlimited funds, DioGuardi contends that this attitude has boosted each taxpayer's share of the $3 trillion national debt to more than $31,000. He proposes several accounting and budget reform measures and advocates a the formation of nationwide citizens' budget-watching committees.

Review

Joe DioGuardi is one of the real heroes in the War on Waste. In this book Joe reads the riot act over how our lawyer-filled Congress mismanages your money and 'cooks' our national books, using numbers like a drunk uses a lamp post - for support rather than illumination. --J. Peter Grace, Chairman, Citizens Against Public Waste

Joe DioGuardi has written a courageous and practical book about the phony budgeting process Congress uses to sustain its financial profligacy. He has both a keen understanding of its accounting gimmickry and some excellent suggestions about how to straighten out our budgetary tangle. --William E. Simon, Former Secretary of the Treasury

DioGuardi has the experience and know-how to expose dishonesty and gimmickry in the federal budget. In this concise, easy-to-read volume, he cuts through the budgetary jargon and offers common sense recommendations to capture a budget that's out of control. --James C. Miller III, Chairman, Citizens for a Sound Economy --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This educational, enlightening, infuriating book is a must read for ever voter!

It is not a partisan book and presents a 'dry' topic' in a straightforward easy read.

Reguired reading for anyone remotely interested in the deficit and debt issues of the federal government to understand the proposals made by either party.

I highly recommend this book!
