Eric Metaxas, New York Times Bestselling author of Bonhoeffer and Miracles
"Knowing Lecrae's unique story and gifts, this book has been a long time coming and is essential to not only those interested in his music and hip-hop, but also those wanting to better understand the intersection between faith and culture and what it looks like to be in the world but not of it.”
Matt Chandler, lead Pastor of The Village Church, President of the Acts 29, author of The Mingling of Souls
"This is an artistic coming-of-age story with all the brokenness and beauty of our American reality and our Christian hope. It's not just the story of how a boy became a man, or how a lost soul found faith, but how an artist found his voice. There's so much here for those who care about the intersection of deep faith with great art. Lecrae is showing the rest of us how it is done."
Andy Crouch, executive editor, Christianity Today, author of Culture Making
Joshua DuBois, spiritual advisor to President Obama, author of The President's Devotional, and founder of Values Partnerships
"From extreme humble beginnings to what many would describe as a dream platform, Lecrae puts his journey in perspective. He recognizes all too well the identity crisis and this generation’s need to be unashamed of the gospel. I recommend this book for whomever is interested in seeing how God is authoring the journey of a fatherless generation in need of the navigator."
Eric Mason, lead pastor, Epiphany Fellowship, author of Unleashed
"Honest. Rare. Freeing. Lecrae is one of the most talented people I know. His story will leave you inspired and challenged. Unashamed reminds us just how powerful the Gospel is. Jesus turns our scars into our stories. This is a story you will want to read!"
Louie Giglio, Passion City Church / Passion Conferences, author of The Comeback
Nancy Pearcey, author, Total Truth and Finding Truth
"It's a rare privilege to see a prophetic story unfold before your very eyes. When it does, you pay attention. Lecrae's Unashamed gives us the raw account of a rare leader stirred by the heart of God to shape culture by creating it."Gabe Lyons, Q, author of Good Faith

UNASHAMED is a powerful story of God’s transformation, and at the same time offers firsthand insight into the realities faced by young, black men in the twenty-first century. Ultimately, Lecrae’s story is one of hope, will resonate with many readers who struggle for a taste of hope in their daily lives.
The autobiography starts with the 2014 Grammy’s, where Lecrae was a nominee, but still an outsider on the red carpet and at the Grammy parties. As a “Gospel” or “Christian” rapper, he wasn’t respected. He is an unashamed believer, but doesn’t like the “Christian” or “Gospel” tag added to what he does.
He doesn’t fit in the music industry today and writes that he never has. In fact, he states that as Christians, we don’t fit in, whether it is at work, in our neighborhood, etc.
Lecrae’s Mom got pregnant with him and married Lecrae’s father, who had anger and addiction problems. She would raise Lecrae on her own. This led to pain and anger for Lecrae as he longed for his father, thinking that he must not be worthy of his love. Uncles and cousins filled some of the gap, but it was hip-hop that he turned to. Rappers became his heroes.
At age six, he began being sexually abused by his seventeen year old female babysitter. That led to a pattern of being sexually active. He went through sexual, physical (from his mother’s boyfriend) and verbal abuse.
His grandmother “Big Momma” (to whom the book is dedicated) was a good influence and took him to church. On the other hand, his uncle Chris a bad influence, introducing him to guns, gangs and trouble. Growing up, Lecrae lived in Houston, San Diego, Denver and Dallas.
Lecrae smoked weed, stole, drank and was a hoodlum.Read more ›
I didn't grow up in the 'hood life' like Lecrae but have suffered various sexual and physical abuse. It's a daily battle and a struggle I didn't even know I had seeking out men's approval.
Anyway, I've seen the fake Christian life and how unhelpful it was for my life but deep in my heart I knew there was more to God than what was being offered at my hypocritical neighborhood church. My life changed when I was older and my relationship with Christ became a real one and I've been a work in progress ever since; finally experiencing true peace only his presence brings.
I also work in the film industry and in the art world and understand that fitting in but not.
Lecrae was honest and straight forward about everything he speaks about and of course, how ultimately God pulls us back to him regardless of what we're getting ourselves into and we either listen or we don't and reap the consequences.
I'm glad he pointed out what religiousness looked like by what he sought after himself thinking it was what Christian meant to be. I've wanted someone in media to point this out since I was about 13 because you see the absurdness of it.
Fantastic work. Honest and true.
Thank you Lecrae for being open and listening to God as he leads.
I don't have the same testimony as my brother, but I can walk closer with brothers and sisters who have a similar testimony to his and encourage them to find freedom from the shame our broken world has placed on them while reminding them the guilt has been paid in full.
It's also a great reminder of the hope we all have in spite of our history.
Thanks brother, the harvest is plentiful.
