5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, Superior Sophomore Album, December 1, 2005

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Unausgesprochen (Audio CD)
Annett Louisan may just be one of music's best kept secrets. There are plenty of excellent artists that never get domestic (american) releases, but in Annett's case, the omission seems nearly tragic. It is the rare foreign language artist that becomes popular on the American scene (Shakira being the only example that comes to mind). Annett sings in German, so many would likely be put off by an inability to understand the lyrics. Frankly, I have no clue what she's singing about.

However, those who manage to hear Louisan's voice will undoubtedly fall in love with her music. Her songs typically sound folky, and yet they have a very unique sound. Her voice is both sweet and whispy. Honestly, I can't think of anyone to whom I can compare her voice or even her music. Some might compare the tempo of her music to Norah Jones, but the style itself isn't heard anywhere else....at least not on this side of the Atlantic.

Louisan's first album was excellent and showcased her beautiful voice, but this is the rare case where the sophomore album is even better. There is a greater diversity in the songs....some venture a bit into old jazz. The instrumentation is also more enjoyable; strings have been used to greater effect here. If you've never heard of Louisan, buy both albums now. If you're reading this review to find out whether the quality of the first album has been upheld....rejoice, Louisan has outdone herself.
