5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeautiful Is Beautiful
I heard Lesley Roy on mtv's show Exiled. I figured to get the cd, and it turned out that I really liked it a lot. I think she is a mix between Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne. To Me Lesley Roy has her own unique sound. I like that how she writes lyrics. The songs on Unbeautiful you can relate to in your own life.

2.0 out of 5 stars pop
This is very "pop-ish". Her voice is a little higher than I like...a combination of higher notes and many songs sound the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply outstanding, November 21, 2008

This album justs get better and better the more I listen to it.From the opening track I'm gone I'm going to the album closer Come Back this debut album from Lesley Roy is full of highlights too many to mention. This is an album of big choruses (title track and second single Unbeautiful will make you very happy indeed), great vocals(Come Back, Psycho Bitch,Dead But Breathing, Come To Your Senses)and a Desmond Child track (Misfit). An album two years in the making, it's been worth the wait. If you buy only one album this year then it has to be Unbeautiful. If you like classic rock tunes with great vocals the this is the album for you. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Honestly, I cannot understand how so many talentless, non-song-writing "artists" are getting all the radio airtime when there are true artists like Lesley Roy just trying to get people to listen to her work. This young, amazing Irish youngster has the talent of someone twice her age. Her voice is like so few I have heard, her songs' lyrics are thought-provoking and each song will grab hold of you and not let go, they are so catchy. I am not a youngster myself, but a 38-year-old mom who just happens to enjoy music like Lesley makes. My favorite songs are:
1)Unbeautiful
2)Thinking Out Loud (which also happens to be Lesley's favorite as well)
3)Dead But Breathing
4)Slow Goodbye
5)Come Back (a crushing song about the loss of a loved one)
6)I'm Gone, I'm Going
7)Here For You Now

Of course, there are other GREAT songs on the album, these are just the ones that get replayed over and over on my mp3 player. The main rule of any album is "are there at least four completely great songs that I love?" then it is worth buying. I very rarely ever buy a complete album anymore because so few of them ever fit the above rule. Every single song on Lesley's album is outstanding which is so rare these days. Lesley needs to be headlining shows instead of being a warm-up act. Please spread the word about this phenomenal singer/songwriter so we get the privilege of owning a sophomore album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, April 27, 2009

I first heard and saw Lesley Roy on a VH1 video with her song I'm Going, I'm Gone. I fell in love with it immediately and then downloaded it. I then decided to order her debut CD after looking her up on Amazon. Wow, this CD got really great after a few listens. I love every song on the album which rarely happens to me, especially with an artist I purchase on a whim. This is one buy that really paid off. I have to say that the song Unbeautiful is my favorite. I can listen to it over and over and this CD has'nt left my car stereo in months, so that is something as I can get bored quickly. I guess Lesley Roy kind of sounds like a huskier Kelly Clarkson. Her songs are pop, but with a bit of an edge that makes them endure longer than the average pop song. Her voice can sound quite husky and rough, but she can also soar which is a wonderful mix. She seems super talented and I can't wait until she has her next album. I hope this one sells well. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm counting on destiny...(4.5), October 31, 2008

The flooded singer/songwriter genre has yet another applicant in Lesley Roy.

Being the avid fan of female vocals I am, I've been swamped sorting through lackluster CDs lately. Just as I was ready for another letdown I picked up Lesley Roy's debut CD, Unbeautiful. As expected, however, this breaks no new ground for singer/songwriters. Sticking to tried and true topics like relationships--most prominently--Lesley really doesn't even give us much we haven't heard there before either.

Q: "So why should I even get it?"
A: Her voice is unlike anything I've heard since Jennifer Knapp.

Given the fact that each of the thirteen tracks included feature an entire band backing her, you couldn't have picked a better voice. I couldn't dream of Lesley Roy trying to sing a ballad with only a piano simply because her smokey voice begs for guitar melodies and pounding drums. Thus, the rock feel Unbeautiful sports throughout fits perfectly.

Lead off single I'm Gone, I'm Going lets you know exactly what to expect upon first listen. Pretty much split down the middle between rockers and slower tracks, there's actually a good balance. If you did get into Lesley Roy thanks to her single, tracks like Here For You Now, Psycho B!@ch, When I Look At You, and Misfit are all waiting for you. If you want to see if she can work her way through a slower song, Slow Goodbye, Unbeautiful, Dead But Breathing, and especially Crushed, Come To Your Senses, and Come Back are all excellent.

My favorite songs are Here For You Now, Psycho B!@ch, Crushed, Come To Your Senses, and Come Back. While I definitely realize Lesley is treading a familiar path she does demand some attention. I don't think Unbeautiful will be the CD to catapult her career, but it will no doubt gain her a lot of fans and a good following. Let's hope to hear from her again.

If you like the chick rocker genre, it doesn't get any better than this. The title track is so good, I would have bought the album for that song alone. But with every song ranging from very good to excellent, this is one of those rare albums you can just play through over and over again. See you at the Grammys Lesley!

To compare Lesley Roy to any other artist would be unjust. This isn't another manufactured bubble-gum pop idol, this 21 year old from Dublin, has real heart and soul poured into her lyrics & music. Lesley writes, "There are a couple of themes that run through the album, evolving around the many different aspects in relationships, whether it is loss of love, not wanting to be in love, trying to help a friend through their own issues, struggling through death of a friend, unrequited love and the happiness and excitement of being in love. There is also a sense of not wanting to be hurt and trying to stand up for yourself after a difficult relationship." A powerful, gripping album that twists and pulls at your emotions. This Irish las deserves your attention!

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Female Pop Rock, October 2, 2008

I listened to this album all afternoon yesterday. I really enjoy it. It's got a lot of the raw energy of Kelly Clarkson, but you can definitely feel some soul in this woman's voice. The first track, "I'm Gone, I'm Going," is a very catchy pop song. I anticipate hearing this on the radio a lot. I also really love Track 10, "Make It Back," and Track 13, "Come Back" - both are a little edgier and remind me of Evanescence. With the support of people like Max Martin, Katy Perry, Desmond Child, and Chris Lord-Alge this album looks to be a bright spot in 2008.

It's a great time to be a music lover, its been a while. Lesley Roy rounds out my top 3 ... Sara Bareilles, Katy Perry and Lesley Roy.

I've been anticipating this release for a while and it more than met my expectations. Vocals are superb, lyrics are mature and well written.

Lesley fills the Rocker Chick void to perfection. Catch her live if you can, she doesn't disappoint.
