5.0 out of 5 stars As advertized
I bought one of these a few years ago for camp, survival and emergency use. The business part of saw compacts nicely and fits beautifully into a little snuff-box sized tin. So it is great for a medium sized survival kit. (I am afraid that for a pocket kit, you will need to make do with an SAS Survival Wire Saw. They work but are no picnic.)

What surprises me...

3.0 out of 5 stars Only OK
I don't know why none of the other reviewers mention this flaw. The blade segments are nice in themselves, but only attached at one point in the middle and while using the saw the corners can slip past each other and get caught there. It still functions, but having two connections per segment like a regular chainsaw blade would be much better. I never even got to use mine...

What surprises me about the Pocket Chainsaw is how often I go to get this thing for regular jobs around the yard. It makes quick work of small to medium sized branches and is much more versatile than any fixed blade saw. There are some jobs that no other tool seems to work for. (At least, none of the ones I've got.)

A bit of essential advice, though: keep this thing clean and well lubricated. ASAP after I am done using this, I brush it clean, then douse it down with WD-40 before storing it away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ever try a Zip Saw when camping?, January 17, 2007

For years when camping I would carry around a folding handsaw, a hatchet or a zip saw when traveling light. I you have ever used a zip saw you know they are slow, a hatchet can work great but can be large to carry around and a folding saw slow. The Pocket Chainsaw is faster than all others and fits in a can the size of a snuff can. Mind you it not as good as an ax or a real chainsaw, but it's smaller and lighter(exception: Zip Saw)than all of the previous options mentioned. This product has found a permanent spot in my camping backpack.

I bought one of these for cutting trees out of the way when mountain biking. Fits in any pocket, and with a little creativity I have managed to get through a 14" or so diameter log. You can slide it under the log, and cut from the bottom to avoid binding during the cut, unlike a bow saw or folding saw which comes in handy. Only downside I have found is that if you don't pay attention to which way it will pinch because when you get it stuck, it is really stuck. On the same note if you get it stuck, and tweak it getting it unstuck, and then it breaks due to that shortly afterwards, their customer service (Supreme Products)is great. Since then I have been more careful about which direction it will pinch from, and haven't had any issues at all, and have taken out multiple 12" + diameter logs. With some forethought this saw is capable of much more than advertised. Works better than anything I have found aside from a chainsaw which is hard to carry around miles back into the woods.

Works well. Tossed a line up and used it on a 5" oak branch well up in a tree.

It still functions, but having two connections per segment like a regular chainsaw blade would be much better. I never even got to use mine because I lent it to a friend as soon as I got it and that one and my other friend's both did it repeatedly. They were able to get it back most of the time, but mine has gotten stuck in that flawed position. A good idea that needs a bot of redesign.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great., October 5, 2010

After reading the reviews, I was pretty excited about this new toy. When I actually got a hold of it, I was not really impressed.

First the pros: It is small, has comfortable handles and does do the job with relative ease.

The cons: The teeth are not actually sharp, so they work more by ripping the wood fibers rather than by cutting. It has a tendency to bind a bit through the cut, and working it through any kind of sappy wood is very difficult. We decided to use a two-man team to try to decrease the workload, and a simple miscommunication caused the blade to bend to the point where it was unusable. Cleaning the teeth is another problem, as sap gets in between the teeth and cannot really be cleaned out properly.

These are understandable issues, as the individual links in the "Chain" are rather thin pieces of metal riveted together in a link.

Considering this tool is about 60% of the cost of the other actual "Chainsaw" style blade saws, these cons are not enough for me not to recommend the product to someone on a budget. But I always like to spend a bit more and get something that lasts.

Great little saw. It's a bit expensive, but works as advertised and it is well made. I use it around the yard and at campsites. My Boy Scouts like to use it so much that I never have to pester them to gather wood for the campfire. Takes up almost no room in my rucksack.

This is listed as a camping saw, but I use it for general yard work around home.

This saw is not quite as hefty as my previous manual chain saw, but it was only half the price. For the price, this is a very good, usable saw. It is very handy for those little tree-trimming jobs that don't quite require a gas-powered chain saw. I attach longer ropes at the handles for removing higher branches. (I don't like to climb a ladder with gas-powered saw.)

To removed bushes, I dig near the base to expose the main roots. Then, I use this saw to cut the roots a foot or so from the base of the bush. The rest is simple. For this type of job, I prefer the manual saw.

I haven't used this saw enough to give an idea of how long it will remain sharp; but so far, so good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I had hoped for..., December 29, 2010

I bought this saw to use instead of my Wyoming saw (collapsable bow saw) when kayak camping because of it's small size. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be bringing it with me anymore. It's a lot more work than using a collapsable bow saw, and when it gets bound up, it isn't easy to get it loose again. You also can't really use it to trim small limbs and branches around camp the way you can with a bow saw. It's not terrible, and may be a good backup/emergency saw, and it may be good for backpackers who would otherwise not carry anything. For me though, where weight isn't as much as an issue, I'll stick with a collapsable bow saw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unreal how strong it is., May 2, 2011

This review is from: Unbelievable Pocket Chain Saw Portable Camping
I just returned from a four day/three night camping excursion where this pocket saw was included in my gear. No one in the camping group initially thought this item was going to work, and assumed it was just like all the cheap wire versions we are used to seeing break immediately. Over the course of the trip this saw was relied upon time and time again to produce firewood, and did its job with ease. One subject, who had brought a really nice and sharp hatchet, actually put his hatchet aside and started using this saw. While the product description says it will cut logs up to 3 inches across we were cutting apart logs four to six inches repeatedly. The most amazing thing about this saw was it seemed to retain all of its sharpness even after the trip! Definitely give this saw a try, as you will be amazed at how capable it is.
