Their New 2010 Bassist, David "Dank" Delong Ain't Chopped Liver!,
By
This review is from: Unborn Again (Audio CD)
Although he's new to the band, I've known Dank since he first immigrated to NYC and landed at the 80's version of Ellis Island, The Port Authority Bus Terminal. He and Tom Hamilton came with Guitar and Drum sticks in hand. I thought I would show these rednecks around the big city, and they ended up showing me a side of New York that I never really wanted to be bothered with before I met them, the Hardcore music scene. I grew up with metal and early hardcore in high school. I listened to the Psychedelic Furs, MDC, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The New York Dolls; I even babysat for a member of the Bad Brains. But it wasn't until meeting Tom and Dank and ultimately living in Psycho (San Francisco - Anyone remember the Folsom Squats and The Vats?) that I really gained an appreciation for Metal and Hardcore.Dank is an excellent acoustic guitarist. He and Tom would practice their instruments for hours at a time. Dave grew up playing acoustic and reading music from childhood. He would make his old beat-up guitar sound better than any over-priced Gibson. He had a problem of breaking strings with his huge powerful hands when he was playing fast complicated melodies or party bluegrass (Hence, I guess, ultimately the bass). But he would also play soft and gentle playing a John Denver tune or when he'd sing to me my personal lullaby, my favorite song by the Jams: English Rose. Dank and Tom would take me down to their rural hometown in PA to visit the folks and introduced me to their "rural friends" and to all-night RV parties, where everyone was hard partying musicians, and there'd be instruments playing and singing till dawn. Tom and Dank would put me screaming, on the back of their dirt bikes and go ripping through the forests jumping 8 foot ditches and descend the rocky mountainsides with abandon. On Sundays I accompanied the family to church where Dank would stand in the back singing the loud hardcore version of the songs in the hymnal :) My first date with Dank was to a head bangers ball at the Palladium where Motorhead, Krokus and Fist played. That was my first Mosh experience; I survived and was transformed. His first date with me was to the movie "Peewee's Big Adventure" and he loved it. He invited me to sing with his band at CBGB's and he and I traumatized the audience at "The Bitter End" with a song and skit about domestic violence. At my godfather's Boz's old split level sky-roofed apt. on 58th St., their band piled onto the fire escape and serenaded noisy 8th Ave. with a full acoustic set of great music. People below looked up and smiled, clapping and appreciative. Dank, Tom and I were tight friends thundering around NYC in Dank's old VW Camper listening to Howard Stern and Imus in the Morning. When the world got too complicated and I just needed some time out, I could always just show up at his home or camper and be comforted. Time drifted us apart and we lost touch, but we can never forget. Everyone who ever met Dank, love's Dank. He's good people. Whiplash is fortunate to have him on their team. Rock On!

Unborn Again is incredible!!! a classic!!! I think it's one of the best of the year for sure!.There is nothing like the sound of Whiplash. This cd is so much stronger than most of their 90's releases you would have to be deaf not to hear it! The maturity is there without a doubt with such a musical well to dip into! Unborn again. It's great to once again hear founding member and band leader Tony Portaro sing again and kill on the guitar with such memorable riffs like only Whiplash has! !was honored to have seen them live in New Jersey and hear the true voice of Whiplash! A classic 10 stars... would be stupid to go unnoticed. Joe Cangelosi returns who played on 2 previous cd's the all time classic 'Ticket to Mayhem" and "Insult to Injury'and also drummer of Kreator on " Cause for Conflict. Rich Day new bass player is a excellent musician and blends great with their sound. incredible thrash!! Pitbulls in the playground/ classic floatface down/ classic swallow the slaughter killer....nothing wrong with this comeback cd!! thank you Whiplash! alive again!! unborn again!!

VERY DISAPPOINTING,

TICKET TO MAYHEM was one of their best albums and made them an 80's thrash legend. "Spiral of Violence" from that album was one of the best thrash songs ever.OMFG, this new album is no where near that same level of intensity - very boring, bland and uninspiring. They do a cover of "I've got the Fire" but ironically, no they don't, they have lost it and it's pretty evident on this album. I wish I could say something more positive but, it's a pretty flaccid comeback and I'm just not with it. Buy this only if you are a die-hard WHIPLASH fan from days before.
