Milk Toast from David Pack,
By Phil Hepple (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unborn (Audio CD)
I was truly looking forward to this CD, but i was shocked when ireceived it in how BAD the songs are! This CD doesn't even come close to the quality of the Ambrosia albums or even David's Anywhere you go album. David you need to go back and listen to Ice Age, The Brunt, Time Waits For No One, Mama Frog, Drink Of Water, Make Us All Aware, and Danse With Me George! These are all incredible songs. In the future please do not leave a drum machine in the final mix. It's extremely annoying. If you must get this CD wait for the domestic release, unless you like MILK TOAST!

MISLEADING SUBTITLE,
By
This review is from: Unborn (Audio CD)
If you're hesistant to buy this album because of its' subtitle ("Unreleased. Unrefined. Songs in the Raw 1985-1995"), don't be. That subtitle is misleading! There is not one song in this collection this not high quality and worthy of release.I've been a fan of DP since he was with Ambrosia. He hooked me with "Biggest Part of Me" in the 80's and I've been listening ever since. I love all five of their studio albums and his solo one back in 1985. However, I have been curious as to what he's been doing artistically since that time; aside from successfully producing and writing songs for others. This album answered my question. I can safely say that this guy STILL HAS IT! It is evident how much he has grown as an artist in regards to range & emotional depth. My personal favorites on this CD are "Natalie's Song", "N 2 Deep", and "The Last Time You Cry (Won't Be)". I'm now waiting for his latest release "The Secret of Moving On" to come out later this month. I've heard sound samples on his website (www.davidpack.com) and they're great. Ambrosia fans will really appreciate his jazzy update of "You're The Only Woman". Nice to see TRUE TALENT because it just gets better with time!!!

Sappy Songs From Mr Pack,
By Sarah (Albuquerque, NM) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unborn (Audio CD)
This CD is a big disappointment! I love David's work with Ambrosia, but the songs on this CD are very poor and the recordingis not very good. At this import price it is really NOT WORTH IT! Let's have some PROG ROCK SONGS! and NOT this SAPPY STUFF.

Unborn,

Well, based on the other reviews I read here, I was prepared for disappointment. However after listening to the songs, I have to disagree with the negative reviewers. No, this isn't prog music by any stretch of the imagination. But it is David Pack. David Pack isn't prog. Ambrosia was prog. David's music is his own. Much like his solo CD from the 80s, it's got smooth ballads, upbeat tempos, and original lyrics that only David can write. Nothing wrong with that! He shows his sensitivity, and his faith, along with his musical abilities, which are second to none. For David Pack fans, this will be a treat. For those looking for progressive rock, best to look elsewhere. This is a good, solid CD, and anyone who loves the elegant sound of this man's voice will be jumping for joy to have this one in their collection....it's been way too long!!

The exleader of Ambrosia still writing great songs after all these years! This cd is a kalidescope of diffrent songs touching on different themes and emotions. Natalies song is a beutiful tribute/love song to the actress.Other songs have the ambrosia feel.Overall this CD is a must have for Ambrosia and David Pack fans!

David Pack ~ Unborn,

With all due respect to those who gave this CD a negative review, the reason it doesn't sound like Ambrosia is because it's not Ambrosia, it's David Pack! If you are a fan, for the love of God, you need to own this CD. Pay no attention to the high price. It's new David Pack! What more do you need to know? His voice still has the power to kill, and the songs sweetly bring you back to the mid-80s, mid-90s.

Finally, another solo project from the distinctive voice of Ambrosia--and it only took 18 years. While other aging rockers' talents have diminished with age, David Pack's voice and songwriting skills are as fresh and vibrant as ever. Each track on Unborn is a gem. There is a great variety of song styles yet the album flows naturally and fits together, unlike some of Ambrosia's later efforts which seemed somewhat uneven and awkward. It's a crime this has to be ordered as a Japanese import. Would no US company distribute this album? These songs should be dominating the FM airwaves. Buy this album!! If you love Ambrosia, this is worth every penny! David Pack fans also need to check out "The Best of David Benoit" (Pack sings "The Key To You") and Alan Parsons' "Try Anything Once" (Pack sings various tracks and the sublime masterpiece "Oh Life-There Must Be More" alone make it worth the price of admission.

Milestone recordings from Ex-Ambrosia Frontman,
By Eric Something (Seattle, Wa) - See all my reviews

I have just been listening to Unborn for the 2nd time in manymonths and I'm just mesmerized by it's consistency and beauty. Although these are supposedly demos Dave couldn't get a record company or other artists to record- they all shine. "Future Glory", "You Make Love New", not any filler. Maybe he chose these diamonds out of many precious jewels. I wish more artists could write melodies and lyrics or this caliber and actually place one on the charts. Dave, you will always be one of the most quintessential artists I love spinning in my player. Good luck guy!

Once again, David shows his impeccable craftsmanship. Although these are unreleased, "forgotten" songs, the thought and work that went into each track is typical of David's strong musical ethic. Along with his "Anywhere You Go" solo album and his work with Ambrosia, I HIGHLY recommend this album. The music on this CD is intended for adult contemporary and soft rock listeners, but Prog-rockers who genuinely understand composition and arranging will enjoy a wealth of creative and original twists throughout the songs on this album. Like all of Dave's music, these songs only get MORE interesting and enjoyable after repeated listenings. Dave, if you're reading this, we'd love some new material from you. Thanks for all your hard work.

This is supposed to be "rough cut demos" but is more polished than lots of slick full releases. Hear lots of influence from his years with Michael McDonald and work with Alan Parsons over the past 30 years. One of the few vocalists/songwriters to work with Parsons, David Benoit, The Rippingtons and McDonald, not to mention his awesome career with Ambrosia and his initial discovery as a prodigy by Leonard Bernstien (conducted his "A Critical Mass" symphony in the early 1970's...an amazing concert). Pack has more talent in his little finger than 90% of the artists on the music scene. If you like quality songwriting, production and excellent vocals, buy this CD! |
