Book Description

An all-new novel from the author of After Hours.

She set out to find herself, and discovered the darker side of desire.

Merry’s lost a lot recently—first her mother, then close to a hundred pounds. Feeling adrift, she strikes out in search of perspective. A three-week hike through the Scottish Highlands was supposed to challenge her new body and refocus her priorities, but when disaster strikes, she’s forced to seek refuge in the remote home of a brooding, handsome stranger…

Rob exiled himself to the Highlands years ago, desperate to escape his own self-destruction. Haunted by regrets, he avoids human contact at all costs…but when Merry turns up injured, he can’t very well run her off. And as he nurses her back to health, Rob can’t resist his guest’s sweet demeanor—or her flirtatious advances. The igniting passion between them rouses a secret appetite Rob has long struggled to keep hidden. But Merry craves nothing more than to help Rob surrender to his desires, and the journey draws the lovers into an entirely different kind of wilderness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Vulnerability at it's Best. October 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Cara McKenna's books because she always delivers three things.

1. Brave topics.
2. Real, layered characters with depth.
3. Extremely hot sex scenes.

Unbound is no exception. I was super impressed with how she tackled two very heady elements. Addiction and fetish. I was also impressed with how she nailed the complexity and vulnerability of her hero. She fit the insecurities of her H& H together seamlessly. It was artful, painful, lovely and beautiful. She doesn't just 'tell' you a story. She puts you right there in the shoes of her characters. I have read all her books and can honestly say each one gets better and better.

I wish there were more authors like her because she breaks the mold with her characters. So often I know exactly how the story will end, never with Cara! I let her surprise me, and it is always awesome!

Rob and Merry are lovely in their desire for each other. And the backdrop the the Highland is incredible.

If you are expecting simply an Erotica read, your either going to be blown away by her awesome, or impatient with the deep character building she does. I almost feel like she writes for writers.

If you want fluff...go pat a bunny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional, Intense, Unique October 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
First things first...Why the hell is this my first Cara McKenna book? Seriously. Approximately halfway through Unbound, I started pushing it on my friends. As soon as I finished, I emailed my book group, telling them they must read it ASAP. Then, one of them emailed me back, gently reminding me that she's been telling me to read McKenna for months. So then I felt like an idiot. But now all is well, because I have seen the error of my ways.

As you may have inferred from the opening paragraph, I loved Unbound. But not only did I love it on a squealy, fan-girl level, I also loved and appreciated it on a much deeper, profound level. This was a beautifully written and constructed story that appealed to me on all levels.

Besides the author's name recognition, the hint at a hero with a penchant for the taboo is what drew me in. But what exactly are Rob Rush's "issues"? The blurb is ambiguous, and I love that. I wanted to know, no, I was dying to know what it was that had sent Rob into exile. What could have possibly driven a man to become a recluse, shun society. I was hoping the reason would be something really juicy, but also meaningful. There's nothing worse than thinking you're digging into a character with heavy, heavy issues, then learning it was superficial. That is not the case in Unbound. McKenna did a brilliant job of creating a deep and complex hero who is also exceedingly alluring. In the opening chapters, it seems we're being led to a conclusion in regards to Rob's pleasure. But in a move that makes me want to jump up to cheer and praise McKenna to anyone who will listen, we soon learn that all is not what it seems. What gets Rob twisted into knots sexually, is out of the "norm", even in kink. It was definitely unexpected, in the most excellent way, but also...

4.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Had Expected October 17, 2013
By by rnj1
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I feel sucker-punched. I started reading Unbound not knowing what to expect, but certainly not what I got. The depth of emotion and complexity of the two protagonists was amazing

Talk about your reluctant heroes!

Then, I stumbled upon the fact that this is the same author who penned After Hours and suddenly it all made sense. Ms. McKenna loves to delve into the darkest recesses of the human mind and bring forth true angst. The resulting growth of her characters is all the more sweeter.

I guess she's got a new fan in me. No more stumbling across her books; now I'm going to be actively seeking them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Goes a little too far off the track for me November 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked After Hours quite a bit, so I bought Unbound, hoping for a similar reading experience. It was in many ways, but the hero's fantasies get a little too strange for my taste. I had no problem with him being submissive and liking to be bound, but aliens coming for his [sperm]? 0_0

Anyhow, the writing is professional with descriptions and insights that I paused to re-read simply because they were so good. I also liked the hero's choices regarding his alcoholism. Both leads exercised caution and showed maturity when it came to making plans for the future.

If you don't mind casual sex and you can overlook the hero's strange fantasies, you'll like Unbound.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well..... October 17, 2013
By LS
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I pre-ordered this book after I read After Hours. I really enjoyed after hours (alpha male hotness) . This book left me dissatisfied. Spoilers........
Merry decides to take a vacation after losing 100 pounds, and go to where her mom who recently passed away lived. So she travels with a backpack overseas. Merry gets sick, bangs her head and remembers seeing a little cabin. She makes her way to the secluded cabin. She meets Rob. Rob has a lot of issues. Sexual fantasies, was a verbally abusive alcoholic, anxious around people.
One minute they are cold to one another, the next Merry is seducing Rob. Then she figures out his fetish (hmmm your thinking psyc major...no she likes making clothes). Suddenly, naturally she becomes a dominatrix. Plus it seems he needs these fantasies in order to get off.
He keeps something secret, she finds out....blah blah. Sorry but I wanted more depth to Kerry's home life prior to her vacation. I really didn't like Rob(just my opinion. I like when the guy is the tough one in the book not the female taking the aggressive role) Then they meet again and the story just ended. There was a build up to a building, a store, job, Rob on the mend, her not having a visa and then end. I went back to look for an epilogue. No nothing.
Wanted to give this review because if I knew it more of what it was about I wouldn't have purchased it as I'm addicted to reading a good book/romance. But with the Alpha being male.
But, I would try this author again for her other book was good.
