Are you looking for a feel-good love story that will have you laughing out loud? Then buy this book. This story clicks on so many levels - friendship, betrayal, 1st love, true love. I've read all of Blayne Cooper's work and loved them all - she truly gets better with each new book. Loved the surprise ending. Can't wait to see what she'll write next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Second chances?, November 27, 2006
This review is from: Unbreakable (Paperback)
This book is a wonderful adventure of 5 little girls who are the very best of friends. From scrapes and bruises to love and dating...elementary school to college, they have been through it together. Secrets have torn them apart for the last 20 years but, will another secret bring them back together and make their bond unbreakable? This book has humor, love, friendship, betrayal, and secrets. Unbreakable is a great book and the characters are so believable and in most cases likeable. A pure pleasure to read. Blayne Cooper is amazing writer and I have enjoyed all her work so far...I can't wait to read more! My advice is read this great book...it will pull you in and pull at your heartstrings in the process. You won't be disappointed! This book will stay in my collection to read again!

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book: you'll laugh, you'll cry..., January 27, 2008
By

This review is from: Unbreakable (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and probably consider it a 4-1/2 star effort. I don't know whether I will read it repeatedly, since part of its punch comes in its plot twists, and there was perhaps a touch too much tragedy relative to triumph for me, and that's why I hesitate at that last 1/2 star. But I believe that I've been pleased with each of Blayne Cooper's books that I've read: the flawless use of language, the realistic and precise characterizations. I am a big fan of this author and would encourage you to check out any of her works.

Myself, I only checked this book out on the strength of the other reviews given it here, because I feel like I've been burned by books in the past that are full of the angst and unrequited love of growing up, but never move past that tragic story to my satisfaction. I don't enjoy the regret-filled or guilt-ridden wallow. I was also wary because there would be so many characters, and many authors can't handle that juggling act, inevitably populating the pages with a bunch of women you hardly tell apart save by name and physical description. In addition, I'm often frustrated by flashbacks, wishing that we could deal with the here-and-now.

I'm very glad that I gave this book a chance. The author displays remarkable skill in expressing each of the girls and women as distinct individuals, whose lives happen to be woven together through a shared past. There was perhaps a bit too much tragedy versus triumph for me (and by that, I'm probably wishing there was more chance to see the new lives the characters would be living, though, granted, that could also have diluted the impact of this story), but there were so many sweet moments, and moments that caused me to laugh out loud, and to cringe in empathy. The romance between Jacie and Nina was precious, but the other relationships in the book were given equal import. It was delightful to experience the strong bonds that these women built as adolescents, that allowed them to ultimately achieve healing as adults. The flashbacks were handled with skill, and were all directly important to the development of the plot.

All in all, a wonderful book that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blayne Cooper Found the Perfect Words, May 13, 2007
This review is from: Unbreakable (Paperback)
In the description of the author, the book states that Blayne Cooper "spends sleepless nights crouched over her computer in search of the perfect words that will make people laugh or weep uncontrollably. She's still looking, but having a great time on the journey."
In "Unbreakable" Blayne Cooper succeeded! The story is engaging. I was both intrigued and enchanted within the first five pages. The plot is cleverly organized and well paced. The dialogue had me laughing out loud, uncontrollably and often. At other times, endless tears of emotion streamed down my face. I reread parts of this book so often, I have it memorized.
I haven't read a book this good in a long time. This book is a gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, not a lesbian romance, November 18, 2011
By

This review is from: Unbreakable (Paperback)
Ultimately, this is a book about relationships. Five childhood friends reunite 20 years after their friendship is fractured. The interweaving of the childhood and adult timelines is confusing early in the book because of the number of characters. However, the structure allows the story of the fracturing to emerge gradually and the resolution as adults is very well done. All five key characters have distinct personalities and those personalities are maintained through both the childhood and adult stories. These personalities also realistically contribute to the fracture and repair of the relationships.

While the lesbian relationship is important within the plot, this relationship is not the focus of the book. Readers looking for a romance novel should read one of Cooper's other books instead (all that I've read have been excellent).

Note for Kindle readers - there was no editor checking that the eBook was created correctly. There are a couple of consistent typos (all words ending in 'th' are concatenated with the following word and case changed so 'with other' becomes 'wiTHother', and all words ending in 'y' have the 'y' separated so 'busy' becomes 'bus y'). If that sort of error is going to throw you out of the story, stick to paper.

I loved this book...the secrets, the sexual tension, the flashbacks. If I could afford to make a book into a movie, this would be the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pageturner, May 6, 2009
This review is from: Unbreakable (Paperback)
This is a story about friendships, and betrayal. It hooks you early on and keeps you wondering and wanting to know through all the twists and turns. The writing is top-notch. No distracting grammatical or spelling oddities. Lots of dialog, and, praise be, no long descriptive sections focusing on what each woman is wearing! No cheap shots, no bizarre plot resolutions... Really, very very mature writing from a writer who has made me laugh and cry, but now is engaging my brain and heart as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden Crown Literary Society Award Winner!, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Unbreakable (Paperback)
A terrific read - one you won't put down until the last page !

This is a wonderful story with great characters. It's also hilarious and filled with moments of intense angst. It is centered around the friendships we make in childhood that sometimes lead to love, hurt and betrayal. It was a total joy to read! With a total big bang surprise ending.
