"You are designed for greatness!" – Lisa Nichols

In Unbreakable Spirit: Rising Above the Impossible, bestselling author and breakthrough specialist Lisa Nichols presents 40 inspiring true stories of bouncing back and soaring high against all odds. Told with unfaltering honesty, hope and compassion for all circumstances, the stories of these authors—Lisa's "ambassadors of fortitude"—are testaments to the unbreakable, unshakable power of the human spirit.

Written in the style of Lisa's bestselling anthologies, Chicken Soup for the African American's Soul, Chicken Soup for the African American Woman’s Soul and Living Proof, the stories in this book reflect experiences common to every walk of life. No matter who you are or what your circumstances, you will find yourself in these pages... along with the courage to rise above your own "impossible" and walk your path to greatness.

2.0 out of 5 stars A for Effort, but Not That Inspiring May 11, 2012
I recently attended the book release party for this book. I was there more for networking as I didn't recognize Lisa Nichols' name as someone who was involved with The Secret (which I've read), nor did I know any of the other authors. Nichols was an excellent speaker, and her presentation influenced me to buy a copy, but I haven't been inspired much since then by this book. I'm about halfway through reading it and I'm forcing myself to finish simply because I would hate to miss (or be) a brilliant author stuck at the back of the book that didn't get read simply because of unfortunate placement.

Each chapter is written by a different author, and they tell their individual stories in approximately 4-6 pages. The throughline they share is having had an extraordinary experience, and it seems they were all students in Nichols' writing seminar. So far, the only author whose story I was truly interested in was Skyler Madison. Her tale of internet love and almost falling into a very expensive trap stood out because her writing very plainly says she refuses to be a victim despite her experience. Good on her! That is energy I can relate to. (I was not surprised to find that she invented the Nirvana Diet - healthy body, healthy mind). Personally, I prefer a story of someone who has truly moved on from their circumstance, and can view (and therefore write) about it objectively.

The opposite seems to be true for the rest of the tales I've made it through. I still hear/feel the victim in the other authors' voices, even though they claim to have risen above their troubles (hence the "unbreakable spirit" theme). I don't say this to belittle their episodes, but to offer constructive criticism in noting that I can feel the difference of where they're coming from in their writing. Reading the end-of-chapter blurb about each author's current endeavors, I see they are all successful business people and are helping others along their paths - yay for that! - but there is obviously still something inside coloring their words with the victim crayon. Although I'm finding it hard to enjoy their stories, I'm grateful for their perspective because it makes me look at my own writing and ask where I'm coming from.

That's just my two pesos.

Update: I did finish the book, and I was right - there was a brilliant author/intuitive healer I would've missed in the second half. When I read Bonnie Silver's story I felt an instant kindred spirit. I looked her up online and contacted her through her website (bonnie L silver dot com). It turns out we both live in Southern California. Although we haven't met yet, we had a fantastic phone session and she really helped me move through an energy block I had at the time. Everything happens for a reason. I'm so glad I got to know the reason I spent time and money on this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A complete inspiration! February 24, 2012

So many times I've been disappointed with collaborative books, but this one truly was difficult to put down. The stories are brief yet intense, courageous, and boldly revealing. I learned a lot about faith, perseverance, and the power of never giving up. "The Unbreakable Spirit ...Rising Above the Impossible" is a complete inspiration!

5.0 out of 5 stars Empowering stories March 29, 2012

Each chapter in this book gave me strength to live an empowered life. It taught me that everyone's 'rock bottom' can be different, but it's truly not how you fall but how you get back up, and get back up they did! The stories in this book will deepen your own perspective as well as show you that no matter what your circumstance, we're ALL capable of miraculous things.
