5.0 out of 5 stars When the X-Men were great!, January 8, 2011

This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
If you're new to the X-Men, or just want to read about their early adventures, then this is the book for you! Back in the mid-70's, X-Men was a series on the verge of cancellation. It was basically just reprints of older stories. Editor Len Wein was handed the title and allowed to do whatever he wanted. Wein and artist Dave Cockrum decided to introduce a whole new team of international X-Men. They made their first appearance in Giant-Size X-Men #1, which is the first comic in this collection. The new team consisted of Nightcrawler (German), Colussus (Russian), Storm (African), Banshee (Irish), and Thunderbird (Native American). Wein also decided to add in Wolverine, a character he had created a year before in the pages of Incredible Hulk. Even though some of the dialogue and concepts are a little dated, I still believe these stories stand the test of time. That's a testament to Wein and Chris Claremont, who took over as the writer of the series and is basically considered the architect of the X-universe. Cockrum's art is still beautiful after all these years, as well. Even though some of the villains are cheesy (Ani-Men, anyone?), these stories are still incredibly fun to read. It's great seeing how this team came together, and their early interactions are interesting because they hardly knew each other. Wolverine isn't as bloody and savage here as he is today, but you definitely see the seeds being sown. Also, this collection ends on a cliffhanger, with Jean Grey starting her transformation into the Phoenix. I highly recommend this trade paperback. It's definitely worth your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have, April 22, 2011

This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
This is a must have for any true X-men fan, young and old alike. The Marvel Masterworks series provides nice collections of full color inked issues. Ny including Giant X-men #1 in this collection, this paperback includes the the formation of a new X-men while introducing iconic characters such as Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Storm. If you want to catch up on some back issues that you may have misses, or you simply want to fill some gaps in your collection or X-men knowledge, this is a must have release. I have collected the entire Essential X-men series (I am awaiting the release of Volume 10 at the current time), but I wanted to have a colored edition of these seminal tales. The Essential X-men paperbacks give you more for your money and come at a cheaper price, but the trade-off is that it is printed on much lower grade paper and only available in black & white. I for one do not mind that as I have many of the single-issues from the 70's on, but if you only buy one Uncanny X-men Marvel Masterworks book, this should be the one. Just remembering before making this purchase that these stories, although classic, were written in a style that more be unappealing to modern day readers as the X-men have certainly come long way since then, but it is nevertheless essential reading to truly understand the mythos of the X-men. Even after all these years the X-men have stayed true to their original purpose. Buy this book and you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Masterworks, April 21, 2011

This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
This Masterworks series of the Uncanny X Men will blow your mind. Unlike some of the others, the action is high-intensity and beautifully arranged. An immense amount of characterization was put into the Uncanny X Men and Chris Claremont wrote it with mastery. His usage of Wolverine was absolutely marvelous and FInch illustrates the story in a way that will impress you. Although smaller than the majority of Masterworks titles, many more volumes of Uncanny X Men are available.
If you are looking for another book by Claremont, try WOlverine: Weapon X, a spectacular insight into the orgin of Wolverine.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a classic!!, March 1, 2012
This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
The comic book that I dreamed of as a 12-year-old boy. I already have Volume 1 and 2 in my collection, but I'm going to buy the following ones for sure. As for the Vol.1 edition, it is great - 8 classical X-Men issues with remastered color.

Nowadays, those initial stories of Chris Claremont's run in UXM may seem to be a little bit old-school and naive of course, but having in mind that they are a prelude to some of the greatest X-Men stories ever told, I can turn a blind eye to the good-but-not-great quality of the script and just pay attention to the sentimental value these issues have for me.

As far as the drawing is concerned, it is good too, but it is again mainly sentiment for me. Let's be honest - with all my respect for the late Dave Cockrum, he was not John Byrne, who appeared as Cockrum's brilliant successor later in the series (by the way, the first two issues by Byrne are available at the Vol. 2).

However, there is one thing that in my opinion is missing in this first Volume, and in the following one as well (and if it had been included, I would have found Marvel Masterworks: UXM Vol. 1 a complete book), namely the back-up stories written by Claremont that were added a few years later in the Classic X-Men series (which was the series of reprints of the original UXM #94-138). Each one of the Classic X-Men issues had those extra stories, which concentrated more on the psychological sides of the protagonists than on the action itself, and which were a perfect development to the main plot. I wish Marvel could think about adding them maybe in some of the future editions of MM: UXM.

5.0 out of 5 stars The X-men at their best, January 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
I thouroughly enjoyed these comics. It was like I was a kid again. Chris Claremont did a great job as writer and Dave Cockram's artwork is masterful. This is the beginning of the Uncanny X-men. We get to see Wolverine and NightCrawler, two of my favorite X-men. Thunderbird dies. I didn't really like him that much. There's Banshee which is kinda wierd I didn't know that he was ever an X-man. Cyclops as usual. It's kinda neat because he acts as the X-men's leader. There's Colossus and Storm. They start with Giant Size X-men number 1 which is the origin issue for the new X-men. It's always neat to see how Wolverine started. Apparently he was in an issue of The Incredible Hulk which I'll have to check out. If I can afford it! Well I hope you enjoy these treasures as much as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars When the X-Men Were Reborn!, January 9, 2012
This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
It may be amazing to think today, but at the beginning of 1975 the X-Men were has-beens, with their comic in reprints and the team only occasionally popping up in other comics. They were drab and uninteresting. Then Giant-Size X-Men No. 1 hit, and I can still remember how excited I was to read about the ``all-new, all-different'' X-Men, an international team with individuals who were far more powerful than the original X-Men.

The stories in this collection remain as fresh today as when they were first published, with art that is lively and vibrant. What is most intriguing is that writer Chris Claremont began emphasizing characterization right from the start, so the X-Men really do come across as individuals almost right away. The stories seemed to have more depth, more vitality than other comics published at the time, which is probably why they have stood the test of time.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the X-Men. You will not be sorry. For a fuller review of this book, search for ''goldenrulecomics'' on squidoo.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-own for any fan of the X-men., June 18, 2010

This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
This book opened a whole new world for me.

Classic comics are an acquired taste, and Marvel Masterworks: Uncanny X-Men Volume 1 is how I acquired mine. I picked up this volume on a whim, and I was hooked in no time.

It's easy to get turned off by the dated style of classic comic books such as these: the dialogue is awkward and cheesy, and the characterizations and stereotypes border on juvenile. However, a little patience and understanding reveals something truly compelling.

Even if these early issues don't blow your mind, they're definitely worth your time, if only to introduce the second generation of X-Men and set the stage for the gloriously epic "Phoenix Saga", which is chronicled in Volume 2.

(This collection contains "Giant Size X-Men #1" and "Uncanny X-Men #94-100", which kick off the long-awaited reboot of the series following its pseudo-cancellation in "X-Men #66".)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun but not perfect., May 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
This volume is a lot of fun. It contains the first six issues of the Uncanny X-Men (originally titled X-Men 101-110) which in turn introduce Colossus, Storm, and Knightcrawler. Wolverine also makes his first appearance as an X-Man. The stories are good if a bit dated but any X-Men fan should enjoy them. Of course Marvel leaves this book with a big cliffhanger leading into Jean Grey's transformation into the Phoenix so you'll want to pick up the second volume as well in order to read that story. My only complaint is that the dimensions of the book are not the same Marvel's other graphic novels nor are they the same as any from DC I have purchased. This throws a bump into my plans for a whole shelf dedicated to Marvel and DC paperbacks of the exact same dimension and size.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1 (Marvel Masterworks) (Paperback)
VERY SAFE FOR AGES FOUR AND UP AND GREAT FOR GROWN UPS TO .It has some great things Giant size X men 1. Wolverine poping his claws out without his gloves 98 and Wolverine with out his mask. Wolverine is not bloody has he is today. The death of Therbird I never liked him anyway was even a muntant at all. The bennging of the Phoenix at the end of the book. A super great story arc.

The not to good things the only cllasic villains are the sentinels and the robotic duplicates of the orginal X men. No Mangneto, Juggernaut or any of the outhers.

DON'T BY IT BECUSE OF GOOD STORYS THERE REALLY IS NOT. BUT IF YOU WHANT TO SEE WOLVERINE IN HIS EARLY DAYS THIS A GREAT ONE TO GET.
