Book Description

October 1, 2009
Uncertain Futures is a two-year snapshot of the student work produced at MIT's Department of Architecture. It is an invitation to a conversation with MIT about the types of narratives of relevance that we - architects, scholars, researchers - tell ourselves daily, in order to do our work, in order to demand the extraordinary, in order to invent, experiment, and innovate. The book opens with Forecast - a collection of conversations that the editorial team initiated with a number of MIT's own actors and its affiliates and friends. The Forecast questionnaire is followed by seven chapters, each collecting work around a specific concern: Hybrid Natures, Alternative Geographies, Office 2020, Tricks and Tracks, Home for the Multitudes, Expanded Infrastructure, and Future Harvest.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Uncertain Futures is more than a mere collection of student work. It is a critical assessment of the past two years of research at MIT's Department of Architecture. It is a platform for reinterpreting, debating, and projecting what we have done and what we will do in the very near, uncertain future. --Yung Ho Chang, Head of the Department of Architecture, MIT

About the Author

Uncertain Futures was produced by an editorial team of graduate students at MIT's Department of Architecture and Assistant Professor Ana Miljacki. Miljacki joined MIT's Department of Architecture in January 2008. She previously taught at Columbia University, City College of New York, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, distinguishing herself as a strong young design teacher and scholar. Miljacki earned a professional Masters of Architecture degree from Rice University and a PhD in History and Theory from Harvard University. Three student editors played an equal part in the production of this book - Master of Architecture degree candidates Lisa Pauli, Morgan Pinney, and Buck Sleeper.
