About the Author

Stephanie Spadaccini has been a crossword puzzle constructor for 30 years. Her puzzles have appeared in Modern Maturity, People magazine, The New York Times, Simon & Schuster Crossword books, the Wall Street Journal, InStyle magazine, and a score of other publications. She is well known in the field and counts the top puzzle editors and constructors among her friends—Will Shortz of the New York Times among them. Stephanie was GAMES Magazines' reigning trivia quiz queen for the eight years she worked there. She has written for numerous TV game shows, including Jeopardy!, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Think Twice, College Bowl, and High Rollers. Stephanie started editing crossword puzzles and writing trivia quizzes at GAMES Magazine in the early 1980s. Later, as the magazine's managing editor, she had the typical responsibilities of managing staff; evaluating ideas for features, puzzles, quizzes, and contests; working with authors and agents on acquisition and editing; and making sure that deadlines and time schedules were met. She wrote and/or edited all feature trivia quizzes.

More About the Author

I was born in the Bronx and lived my first 20-odd years in an apartment, so I have an unnatural fear of the great outdoors, even tho I now live in California in a house with a lovely view of trees and stuff. I attended Catholic schools all the way thru, including college, which prepared me well for my future as a writer/editor. (All those sentences we had to diagram.) In grade eight, I won the borough spelling bee and went on to the New York State finals, but lost when I couldn't spell "labyrinth." (I'm still not sure that's right.) It looks right, doesn't it? I married young, had three kids, got divorced, am now a grandmother, which I like very much. I started constructing crossword puzzles when my youngest child went off to kindergarten and I sat down to solve the daily New York Times crossword. Hey, I thought, I could maybe do this. And I did. When my kids were grown, I moved to L.A. and got work writing for a few game shows, including 'Jeopardy!' But life in L.A. got old fast, so I moved to San Francisco. Now I write crosswords regularly for People magazine and AARP magazine. Besides my Uncle John Puzzle Books, these are my only regular gigs, so I'm always looking for other puzzle or non-puzzle work, like writing for the Uncle John's Bathroom Readers--a great outlet for a trivia hound such as myself.

This is a puzzle book like no other -- it's got something for everyone. The crosswords and other puzzles are very high quality (but not necessarily hard) and the quizzes are fun and funny, just like the Uncle John readers. We've been playing it together as a family and we've been consistently amazed and amused. Other puzzle books usually concentrate on one kind of puzzle, but this one has a great variety of fun stuff to do. We can't wait for the next one!

My husband never relaxes he is always either at work or working on the house. I bought him the set of four of these puzzle books. He loves challenging his mind and learning new things. This series is great at getting him to sit for awhile. He still is doing something but resting at the same time. My teenage kids also have gotten in on reading and doing these books. We love the whole bathroom reader collection. I have even given bathroom reader books to my in laws as presents and they love them as well. Its a gotta have book in our house.
