Even after more than twenty years, "(Not Just)Knee Deep" still makes one, young or old, want to get on the dance floor. That's enough makes this a disc to "heat up" anyone's household.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bring It on Down, May 14, 1998

The bass comes down. The drums drop from heaven. The choris of the men and women of Funkadelic may just be the Heavenly Host. This is music for crazy dancers, lovers who need to keep moving, and the Dancing Buddha.

You'll hear sounds you're sure you've heard before; this is one of the mosrt-sampled albums ever recorded. There's a reason why - it's simply outstanding.

Words really can't describe "Uncle Jam Wants You". From the instrument to the vocal arrangement, you can't help but get your groove on once the music starts to play.

i give this cd 5 stars only because knee deep is on here, that was a funk classic better cause the 15 minute version is on here, one of p-funk's most sampled hits freak of the week was tight george disses disco but this has a disco vibe, this was from the last days of funk, the whole funk mob played out in 1981 i'm like damn the signs were evident in the releases beyond this, side 2 is a waste of time to listen to, michael hampton could have did better to hear mike at his best check out one nation under a groove. not the best from funkadelic but like i said every p-funk collector needs this only because knee deep is on here.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of late-period P-Funk, February 25, 2009
This review is from: Uncle Jam Wants You (Audio CD)
Funkadelic's previous album One Nation Under A Groove had been George Clinton's biggest commercial success ever. Nonetheless, despite Clinton having claimed throughout the 1970s that he wanted to make P-Funk a commercial success, and despite the "punk revolution"-induced tightening of radio playlists making it extremely difficult for creative artists to succeed, the follow-up "Uncle Jam Wants You" featured less of the relatively sweet sound they used to gain success with "One Nation Under A Groove" or "Into You".

Instead, on "Uncle Jam Wants You", Funkadelic produced the tightest and most passionate album Clinton had ever made under that name. The beats are much more audible than on One Nation and never before had the playing on a Funkadelic album been so well integrated.

The opener "Freak of the Week" shows the change audibly from its first note with its dense, though not overtly loud beats and the strangely beautiful siren-like voices that remind you why Clinton called his group the "Mothership". The song indeed is as simple as Roxy's "Avalon" and equally lovely - the synthesisers are not actually that different in texture. Second track "(Not Just) Knee Deep" is a continuation of "Freak of the Week" and stands as the most ambitious epic P-Funk ever committed to record, going for over fifteen minutes. The children's voices on these two pieces are quite enchanting and make one imagine falling in love for the first time in one's life, yet the beat in the middle section, with its remarkably simple alteration of drum and percussion, is one of the most unique of the late 1970s. The later part of the song features much more guitar and a simpler beat, but loses nothing in hypnotism.

"Uncle Jam", a call to take up funk that rivals the best from Mothership Connection and Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome, is even better than the first two tracks. Never have P-Funk managed to play such a tight funk jam or used more passionate chanting in the name of promoting funk. Yet, the mood is much more varied than even on "Sir Nose D'Void'of'Funk", which says a great deal about Clinton's capacity to rouse African-Americans in the late 1970s. When the backing vocals chant "you got to" it is one hard-to-forget moment, whilst the line "I'm a soldier/in the army/for Uncle Jam" is the fiercest think P-Funk ever put on record. The dense rhythms intertwine like in few other songs.

"Field Manoevres" is a short, but rock-hard, rocker with an intensity that few in the day could come near. The tightly locked groove works as a unit more solid than a brick wall. In complete contrast, "Holly Wants To Go To California" is a simple piano ballad that could qualify as a torch song with Clinton's rather high voice, yet it is too sad and wistful to ignore completely. Closer "Foot Soldiers (Star Spangled Funky)" is a reprise of the first three songs with some chants that almost approach the tone of a military command. It may be the least important track here, but it still shows the dense, powerful rhythms and siren-like vocals that make so much of "Uncle Jam Wants You" a wonderful listening experience.

All in all, "Uncle Jam Wants You" is one of the best albums George Clinton ever recorded and an excellent way to round off the 1970s.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE WEAKEST FUNKADELIC ALBUM EVER, September 8, 2008
This review is from: Uncle Jam Wants You (Audio CD)
funkadelic was supposed to be hard acid rock in the mold of hendrix but since funkadelic's breakthrough cut was one nation whicvh was a synth track funkadelic dedcided to do another album of party jams problwem was p funk was anti disco but was george clinton selling out anyway freak of the week is a cool jam like the vibe the song is hot knee deep is very overrated and one of p funk's berst sampled jams uncle jam I do not like this song even though bootsy and bernie worrell is on the track field manuevers is the only guitar track on the album you get eddie hazel, glen goins, and mike hampton funking it up it'sd okzay6 but it's not one of funkadelic's best guitar driven jams like previous efforts you get holly wants to go to california george singing off key while bernie worrell just plays keys a weird song and foot soldiers should have have been deleted long ago it's just filler philippe wynne debuts his time with the mob on here he would do his album wynne jamming then die of a stroke in 1984, tiki fulwood was listed in the credits but I can't recognize his drumming jim vitti said he was on field manuevers but the drummer sounds like jerome brailey who was also credited on the album.
