There are a trio of things that make this purchase worthy of a one start review. To break it down -

Too Slow:
Ordered 4-27-2011 with 2-day shipping. They arrived 5-05-2011. No matter how you break that down, unless you say "Days that end in 'y' don't count," that's not 2-day shipping.

Too Few:

UPDATE: We've had our red wigglers now for about a year in one of our raised bed gardens and they're still thriving. The soil in that bed is ready to be moved to other beds for vegetable growing. It is so rich and light and in 500% better than what we started with. The worms aren't exactly talking to us, but they sure seem like our choice of organic matter we discard into their home.

My wife and I USED to be very organic... we ground our own flour and made our own whole grain bread. We made yogurt, sourdough culture, dried our own fruit, used honey in excessive quantities. But as we grew older, we got less and less organic and more convenience-oriented. We're not eating white bread and cheetos, but we haven't ground flour in a few years. This past summer, we wanted to grow some vegetables in our raised vegetable beds on our back property. The soil was pretty compacted - lots of clay here in northern California... so we looked into composting.

We ran across the Live Earthworms at Amazon and thought - why not? Let's try this. We ordered a bunch of Red Wrigglers from these folks and got them in a few short days. They were mailed in newspaper and, while I didn't count them, they all looked none-the-worse from their trip across the country from Pennsylvania. We followed the package instructions and put them in our raised beds and now - many months later - they're doing great. We feed them about every week with cutup vegetable trimmings, coffee grounds, eggshells, some wet newspaper and these guys are living large. But even better is what they're doing to our raised beds.... the soil they've lived in is soft, loamy, nicely textured, and looks and feels about ten times better than before these guys called it home. I'm actually surprised that they are still thriving - it rarely freezes here, but I thought they might dig down deep in the winter and never return... I suspect they like the diet we are giving them.

The other fun thing is that this vendor provides some great - and fun-to-read information about "vermiposting" and gardening. It almost feels like he is giving up his children for adoption and wants to make sure that they thrive in their new environment!

I purchased the worms a few months ago. They arrived alive and are still going strong. Also, they have produced alot of new little babies! Great way to make some great compost for your garden!

This seller is amazing. I ordered the worms and they came pretty much instantly. The seller warned of them possibly being stressed or dehydrated upon arrival but the worms were happy and healthy and numerous in quantity. I am so happy and was not expecting such a great find on Amazon. The shipping is SO cheap, it blows my mind.

I was not sure ordering worms for the first time, I was not sure quite what to expect being that I live in an area that 2"deep is solid cap rock. We created raised beds for vegetables, bringing in 12 inches of dirt. They arrived in a timely manner, 4 days. Large bag for price, even with the filler more worms than I could count. Upon opening the bag all worms were still moist and moving around, after I placed them in the dirt, immediately they all began to disappear. Directions included were followed besides worms being divided into 4 raised vegetable garden beds instead of keeping in one large colony. Overall great service and worms seem to be acting like worms. I included some photos to give a better visual of what to expect being that there is a limited amount of information on this product. My photos represent a 1.lb bag.

THIS ORDER IS GREAT. FAST SHIPPING, WITH TONS OF WORMS WELL PACKAGED AND HEALTHY ON ARRIVAL. I am relatively new to worm composting...and it looks like my first order, not with Worms Etc., but instead with someone billing himself as a "Worm Man" showed my inexperience. I ordered a pound of worms from that independent seller's site. I would be surprised if there was even a full pound of bedding packed haphazardly into used margarine containers (re-use is cool, but these were pretty schlockey). There were not that many worms. PERHAPS 1/4 the worms I got in this order. THIS order was professionally packaged. Worms come in a damp canvas bag tied off with a cotton string. That sack is wrapped in a paper bag, which in turn is packed in shredded brown paper that can be used as bedding, and doubtless kept the wrigglers warm and safe on their ride to me. Some of the worms were outside the canvas bag, but none outside the paper bag. And when I opened the bag? It was writhing with a metropolis of worms in clean coir based bedding - hardly the hide and seek in the dirt and lettuce I had with the last seller! I AM VERY PLEASED. I may order from a third vendor to see who is the best of the lot and will update. I also took some pictures and a video and may post those if I get around to it.

Fast shipping--Received the worms in 2 days. Worms were alive, healthy, and moving. I started a worm composting bin with my 3 y/o daughter and she loved touching and learning about the worms. A great project for kids. I would have given 5 stars but I seriously doubt I received 1000 worms, maybe 200 at most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, February 20, 2011

These worms are awesome. They are turning all of my family's food waste into extremely fertile stuff. You don't have to keep them in one of those expensive containers, I keep mine in just a plastic storage tote I got from Kmart for $4. They are one of the easiest pets and are actually useful. They also breed very quickly, so you could use a few for fishing. This small purchase has helped me grow hundreds of dollars worth of food and save the environment a little (since trash isn't being transported to the dump and then decomposing there to give off methane).

Too Few:

You're supposedly buying 1,000 worms. In reality, as others mention, there are roughly 300.

Too Dead:

And of the 300, most are dead.

Stay away from this purchase; waste of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voracious little critters!, March 30, 2011

This review is from: Uncle Jim's Worm Farm 1,000 Count Red Wiggler Live Composting Worms (Lawn & Patio)
Because I've never done any worm composting before, I was grateful for Uncle Jim's advice to add a half cup of water to the worms as soon as I received them. He explained they were sent in a desiccant (in a little burlap bag) and would take up to a couple weeks to plump up and become active. I had their plastic container "home" ready. Uncle Jim was right. I've had them for about a month now and I see lots of them wiggling around when I add new food. I'm looking forward to learning more about their habits; wish I had a young child to share this adventure with. I plan to put about half of them in a vegetable garden this summer. They do seem to be voracious little critters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful worms!!!, April 14, 2010

This review is from: Uncle Jim's Worm Farm 1,000 Count Red Wiggler Live Composting Worms (Lawn & Patio)
I ordered these earthworms a week ago, not knowing what to expect since I had never before ordered live worms, or live anything. Anyhow, the worms arrived at the postoffice this morning and they called me to come pick them up. I already had two composting bins at home prepared with a layer of sod and some ejected vegetable/fruit pulp from my juicer. So after bringing home the package of earthworms, I gingerly opened it. They were packed with great care. I split the contents into each of the compost bins. There were a lot of healthy looking red worms. They slid into the sod right away. I hope to have some good, healthy, nutritious and rich compost in a few weeks in which to grow my wheatgrass!

The worms looked very healthy and were very well packed in a bag along with soil. The bag was then placed in a box surrounded with shredded paper. The earthworms were of all different sizes.

This is an excellent outfit to purchase the earthworms from. Its definitely worth the cost. It took a week to receive the worms after placing the order.
